mercy corps bookFront and back cover design for a

32-page book commemorating the

Mercy Corps Phoenix Fund’s donor trip

to India and Nepal and featuring the

photography and words of Joni Kabana.

The objective was to follow the existing

Mercy Corps style guide but also

differentiate Phoenix Fund. The Phoenix

Fund gathers private seed capital

for start-up projects in communities

recovering from war or social upheaval.

For the cover I felt that an illustrative

approach would best appeal to the

diverse audiences for the project and

add an element of mystery.

Abstract shapes represent the concept

of seed grants and the lotus flower

symbolizes prosperity and hope in a

culturally relevant way.

mercy corps bookFor the interior pages, my approach was

to honor the content with minimalist

design and thoughtful pagination that

followed the rhythm of the story. I used

subtle graphic elements such as henna-

inspired borders, passport stamps, and

relief maps to reinforce the message of

the text and add visual interest. I became

an active participant in the story-telling

process, working closely with the writer/

photographer to get additional images

or information where I felt it would

support my creative vision.

mercy corps bookThe content of this book inspired me

with a deep sense of gratitude and I tried

to convey that in the most appropriate

way. The photos were so well-concieved

it was often most appropriate to

display them without any editing but

occassionally I overlaid gradients or

turned them to duotone for a dramatic

effect. The turquoise photo at the top-

left was taken by a Media Student that

the photographer (Joni Kabana) met

while traveling. Proceeds from the sale

of this publication will benefit media

related efforts in India/Nepal through

Mercy Corps.

literacy mapThis was printed as a 30" x 40" poster for

display at Adult Education Day at the

Oregon State Capitol.

The objectives were to represent both

the need for improved literacy in Oregon

and the activities of current state-

sponsored volunteer literacy tutoring

programs in a visual way to an audience

of busy policymakers.

I accurately represented widely variable

data by scaling the icons proportionally

on a logarithmic scale. And I got to meet

the governor!

terra vita grazingThis client had a successful goat grazing

service which they wanted to start more

actively promoting, but no defined

identity.

Their objectives were to maintain a

homegrown and approachable feel

while also gaining credibility and

maintaining flexibility to expand their

services to include land management

consulting. My background in natural

resources gave me unique insight into

their philosophy and target audience.

They chose the name Terra Vita and

we worked from there to create

identity materials that would convey

their message of health and vitality to

landowners in the region.

terra vita grazingThis website needed to be accessible on

older browsers and slow connections

because much of the target audience

lives in rural areas. A combination of

lists, text, and images provides visitors

multiple avenues to learn about the

services available. The bright but earthy

colors and candid photos of goats help

to capture the humorous spirit that

people sometimes react with when they

first see a herd of goats in an familiar or

unexpected location.

the river whyBook cover redesign for a novel about

fishing and philosophy by Portland

author David James Duncan. My design

was inspired by an important scene

in the story when the main character

follows a female salmon upstream and

realizes that the “why” spelled out by

the shape of his favorite river is not a

question, but rather a statement—and

just the answer he had been seeking.

The bright, near primary colors and

quirky design reflect the youthful and

eccentric character of the story.

once upon a timeBook cover and title page designs

for a collection of Russian folk tales

inspired by a Ukrainian friend who

helped with research and translation of

the story titles. I drew the ornaments

and letterforms by hand based upon

traditional Ukrainian folk art, scanned

the drawings, auto traced in Illustrator,

then also manipulated the images in

Photoshop.

yerba libreLogo for a proposed brand of yerba

maté bottled beverages.

Yerba maté is a tea-like beverage which

is traditionally drank by native people of

southern South-America. It is popular in

Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil,

and increasingly throughout the world

with internationally-savvy consumers.

This brand name is inspired by the

alcoholic drink “Cuba Libre.” Symmetrical

balance and nature references represent

the soothing energy of the beverage and

ritual symbolism of peace and friendship

while a dash of socialist revolutionary

iconography gives a youthful edge and a

bit of mystique.

yerba librePackaging for bottled beverages in four

internationally-inspired flavors.

The packaging shows the dried maté

leaves along the bottom as a texture to

represent the ground with clouds and

open space reinforcing the connection

to nature and the idea of “freedom.”

Clear informative text about the drink,

references to environmental impacts,

and nutritional information appeal to

educated consumers. A round booklet

rests in the cap which could be used

to communicate and interact with

customers in an unexpectedly tactile

way, potentially as an avenue for

activism or education.
