GOSPEL REFLECTION - Sunday Before Christmas Dec. 20

As you look through the genealogy of Jesus you can see many names that may be familiar to

you when reading the Old Testament accounts. Thousands of years ago the promise of the

Messiah coming into the world came to Abraham, God told him that his descendants would

be numerous and the Messiah would come from his blood line. When Jesus came into the

world He came as a Jew into the nation of Israel. For years they had been waiting for the Messiah that was

promised, and all the signs indicated that the Messiah was going to come soon. Most of the Jews heard the

preaching of John the Baptist, saying that he was preparing the way for the Lord. All Israel had to know the

Messiah was coming. They had this view of who the Messiah was going to be. They expected Jesus to come as a

conquering general and to set up a kingdom on earth Jesus never tried to become king as He lived on the earth; He

came humbly. The Jews expected Him to come with more power and that is why so many of Israel rejected Jesus as

the Messiah.

GOSPEL REFLECTION - Sunday After Christmas Dec. 27

HEROD who was reigning in Judea at the time of the birth of Our Saviour, having heard that the

Wise Men had come from the East to Jerusalem in search of the King of the Jews, was troubled.

He called together the chief priests, and learning that Christ was to be born in Bethlehem, he

told the Wise Men: “When you have found Him, bring me word again, that I also may come and

adore Him.” But God having warned them in a dream not to return, they went back to their homes another way. St.

Joseph, too, was ordered in his sleep to “take the Child and His Mother and fly into Egypt.” When Herod found that

the Wise Men did not return, he was furious, and ordered that every male child in Bethlehem and its vicinity of the

age of two and under should be slain. These innocent victims were the flowers and the first-fruits of His martyrs,

and triumphed over the world, without having ever known it or experienced its dangers.

GOSPEL REFLECTION - Sunday Before Theophany - Jan. 3

John the Baptist's life was fueled by one burning passion -- to point others to Jesus Christ and to the coming of his kingdom. Scripture tells us that John was filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother's womb (Luke 1:15, 41) by Christ himself, whom Mary had just conceived by the Holy Spirit. When Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth, John lept in her womb as they were filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:41). The fire of the Spirit dwelt in John and made him the forerunner of the coming Messiah. John was led by the Spirit into the wilderness prior to his ministry where he was tested and grew in the word of God. His message was similar to the message of the Old Testament prophets who chided the people of God for their unfaithfulness and who tried to awaken true repentance in them. Among a people unconcerned with the things of God, it was his work to awaken their interest, unsettle them from their complacency, and arouse in them enough good will to recognize and receive Christ when he came. Do you point others to Christ in the way you live, work, and speak?

Why did Jesus say that John the Baptist was more than a prophet? (Luke 7:26). John was the voice of the Consoler who is coming (John 1:23; Isaiah 40:1-3). What the prophets had carefully searched for and angels longed to see, now came to completion as John made the way ready for the coming of the Messiah, God's Anointed Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. With John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit begins the restoration to the human race of the "divine likeness", prefiguring what would be achieved with and in the Lord Jesus. John's baptism was for repentance -- turning away from sin and taking on a new way of life according to God's word. Our baptism in Jesus Christ by water and the Spirit results in a new birth and entry into God's kingdom as His beloved sons and daughters. Jesus is ready to give us the fire of His Spirit that we may radiate the joy and truth of the gospel to a world in desperate need of God's light and truth. His word has power to change and transform our lives that we may be lights pointing others to Christ. Like John the Baptist, we too are called to give testimony to the light and truth of Jesus Christ. Are you eager to hear God's word and to be changed by it through the power of the Holy Spirit?

Христос Раждається! Славіте Його! Maybe the Christmas message this year will be a challenge for all of us, however know the certain truth of Gods incarnation and birth will never change and that the holiness of Christmas will ring out loud and clear even as the commercial and secular nuances are stilled. Your presence will be missed at church this year, but we pray that we can still gather together in your home thorough the livestream, watching the services near your own simple nativity, remembering the hope that comes from a small child born in a manger. Be gentle this year to each other and yourself, stay fixed on goodness and light, reach out in safe and meaningful ways, remember in prayer the front line workers, civil authorities and those ill or who have passed. Our personal prayers as your parish clergy is that your Christ-mas be Joyful, Gladsome, Holy, quiet, simple and still and that all your Christmas’s to come be Merry and Bright. Thank you for all your generosity and patience as we continue to serve even as the church buildings remain closed. Your support prepares for a time we shall soon reopen giving thanks to God together hand in hand. We must also give special thanks to the volunteers, cantors and office administrator staff who have worked passionately to continue Gods rich ministry in our churches, we appreciate you and love you. Very Rev. Fr. Mark Gnutel Rev. Fr. Alan Wizinsky

METROPOLITAN LAWRENCE'S 2020-2021 CHRISTMAS GREETING

Greeting by His Grace, Metropolitan Lawrence Huculak, Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Winnipeg ...

My prayerful greeting to everyone during these days of Christmas preparation, is that the peace and joy of the coming of our Saviour, born in the poverty of the Bethlehem manger, nourished by loving and faith-filled parents, visited by neighbourly shepherds, and supported by foreign strangers, the Magi - that these gifts of the first

Christmas be part of your life during this pandemic season! Christ is Born! Glorify Him!

FEAST OF THE THEOPHANY OF OUR LORD (JORDAN)

The Feast of the Theophany commemorates the Baptism of our Saviour in the River Jordan and the manifestation of the three Divine Persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Theophany is one of the greatest feasts of the Eastern Church, whereby it is customary to bless water which is used throughout the year and used in so many ways. The faithful also take the blessed water to their homes and use it during illness, danger, family prayers and other Christian rituals.
