DEVOTEDTOPRAYERToday, asweawaitPentecost, wecome to theendof the baptismal homily from Peter that we haveheard over the past few weeks. This homily waswrittenbyarealistwhoknewthejoyandthegloryof a Resurrection faith, but also knew that thestrength of that faithwouldbeput to the test andtried in suffering. Earlier this yearwe heard Jesuspreach, “Blessed are youwhen they insult you . . .because ofme” (Matthew5:11) and this is echoedtodaybyPeter.ThesewordsarealsoformedintheimageofChristwhoprays to theFather inheaventoday, aprayerthatisplacedinJohn’sGospelrightbefore Jesus endures his suffering and death. OurawaitingtheSpirit, awaitingourmission forChristmeansthatweare, most likely, awaitingsomesortof trial and suffering. We don’t endure the samedegreeofpersecutionthatPeterandJohnknew, buteach of us has our faith put to the test eventually.Anditisforthisreasonthatwe,likeJesusandlikethosefaithfulfollowersgatheredintheupperroom,devoteourselvestoprayer. Dear Parishioners,
In one of his meditations before mass, St. Alphonsus Liguori, the father of the Redemptionists,
has the following words for his priests;
Oh, if God should have honored but one man in the world with the priesthood,
with the power of causing the Incarnate Word to descend upon this earth and
of the delivering souls from hell by absolving them from their sins, in what
estimation would not such a priest be held by all? And what thanksgiving would
not this priest offer to God?
Oh Priest, the number of other priests in no way diminishes your own dignity
and your own obligation.
St. Alphonsus’ words give me special pause this year. It is Father Calder’s sixtieth and my fiftieth
in the priesthood.
Please join us in thanking God, our Blessed Mother, St. Joseph, all the bishops, priests,
and religious we’ve been assigned with, and the hundreds of people we’ve known in our various
parishes, especially here at O.L.A.
We’ve come this far with all their help and that of our dear families. Again, thanks be to
God for our vocations to the priesthood.
Let’s pray for each other
Msgr. Kevin B. Noone
P.S. Please pray in Thanksgiving on Thursday, May 28th, for
Fr. Calder and on Saturday, May 30th, for me.

Pope Francis’ Coronavirus Prayer
O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey
as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the Cross were near to the pain of Jesus,
keeping your faith firm. You, Salvation of the Roman People,
know what we need, and trust that you will provide for those needs so that, as at Cana of Galilee,
joy and celebration may return after this moment of trial. Help us, Mother of Divine Love,
to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us,
He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and took up our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross,
to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen. We seek refuge under your protection,
O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test –
and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.
