NEWS AND EVENTS

My dear friends at St. Elizabeth’s:

In my homily last week, I reflected on Advent being a special time of preparation for the coming of Christ. All

this preparation for Christmas is hard work! It might seem to be overwhelming. Especially if the focus of our

preparation is driven by the consumerism of the secular world. We can get so caught up in the hustle and bustle

that we don’t take the time to reflect on the “reason for the season.” But, Advent is intended to give us an oppor-

tunity to pause, to step back a bit, and to nourish our spiritual life. If we do this, Advent becomes a time of joy-

ful preparation and hopeful expectation for the coming of the Lord.

With Christmas only a week away, the call to prepare and “make straight the way of the Lord,” proclaimed by

John the Baptist takes on an added urgency. Yet, Advent is probably the most difficult time to rise upward to

meet John’s call for action and conversion because of all the distractions and busyness of our lives. So, what

might we do?

Perhaps one evening this coming week we can turn off the TV and do some spiritual reading. Or maybe as a

family say a prayer over the Christmas nativity. We can visit someone who is lonely or provide a meal to our

homebound neighbor next door. We can right our relationship with God through a good confession. For some of

us it can be quiet prayer before the Blessed Sacrament, gazing upon the God who gazes back on us. For others it

might be a quick simple prayer while doing the laundry or emptying the dishwasher.

Finally, we can turn to Mary, the Mother of God, as our model and ask for her intercession to help us prepare for

the coming of Christ. It was Mary who believed all things were possible for God. She gave her yes, “may it be

done to me according to your word,” for the Son of God to be conceived in her womb by the Holy Spirit. This

Advent, may we prepare ourselves to give our yes for Christ to come into our heart, our mind and our soul.

Come, Lord Jesus. Come soon!

Best wishes for a joyful Advent and Merry Christmas!

Christmas Flowers This verse rings true all year, but never

truer than at Christmas. The poinsettias, greens & trees lend a

beauty to our church during this joyous season. A flower memorial

is a great way to remember your loved ones this Christmas. Dona-

tion envelopes were included in your envelope packet and are avail-

able in the Narthex or Parish Center. Clearly fill in the name of

your loved ones and turn in the envelopes with the collection. A

special listing of all memorial names will be in our January bulletin.

Stewardship the gift of treasure for last weekend was $22,081

of which $2,897 was from online giving.
