Third Sunday of Easter w April 26th, 2020Acts 2:14,22-33 w 1 Peter 1:17-21 w Luke 24:13-35

Dear Parishioners,Last Sunday, shortly before our 10:30 a.m. livestreamed Mass

on Divine Mercy Sunday, I had an urge to check my phone. One of the notifications, from my Timehop app, dutifully re-minded me I was Confirmed five years ago that very day in college. Photos of the day featured myself and my fellow con-firmandi gathered excitedly (and closely) around the Bishop. Looking around our own Church, with an empty sanctuary full of recording equipment and plenty of distance between our small crew, there was a stark contrast from memory to reality.

Despite momentary sadness, I also felt joy in our ability to offer online Masses to our community. We’ve received mes-sages of gratitude, as well as many questions about the pro-cess. Some have even inquired if we can continue to livestream Liturgies in the future, when the congregation returns. I am excited to shed light on these questions for you, as well as share our practices and how they have evolved over a five week period.

When the Archdiocese of Bos-ton announced the suspension of public Masses on Friday, March 13th, our staff adapted quickly. The following weekend, our Lae-tare Sunday Mass and a message from Fr. Joe aired on our You-Tube channel. Due to technolog-ical limitations, the Masses for the Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent were filmed in advance. The camera crew was Andy Jowenson, Brian Maher and me. Our tools consisted of: three digital sin-gle-lens reflex (DSLR) cameras, a Mevo camera, four tripods, a shoulder rig, and two Zoom H4n audio recorders. I would then import all of the footage and audio files to Adobe Pre-miere Pro for editing. Once that was finished, the final product would be exported and uploaded to YouTube. [Now you might not understand all that, but believe me it was quite a bit of work!]

With Holy Week approaching, we began brainstorming our options. We were determined to produce our services for the Triduum, with a live stream on Easter Sunday. A conversation with Boston College granted us an installation of a permanent ethernet connection in the Church, which makes livestreaming possible.

To our delight, we began livestreaming to YouTube on Palm Sunday, using Brian Maher’s Mevo as the only camera. What’s unique about the Mevo is its ability to capture a wide angle view while also focusing on specific shots. You control the camera from an iPhone or iPad, and can select a part of the shot to zoom in on, which creates the perspective of multiple

cameras. We used the Mevo to livestream Holy Week Masses and Easter Sunday, and will continue to do so until further notice.

On Palm Sunday, you may have noticed phones on the al-tar during the reading of the Passion Narrative. The phones were synced to the Mevo as microphones, so we could cap-ture audio. Fortunately, before the Triduum, a sound techni-cian was able to help connect our audio mixer to our house sound system to provide much better quality audio. It all is connected directly to, what Fr. Joe has referred to as that magic camera: the Mevo!

There has been some concern about our presiders, lectors, and acolyte appearing too close during our Masses. What many viewers are experiencing is known as perspective dis-tortion. What this means is that the distance of the camera from the subjects combined with the angle of the shot can interfere with our ability to correctly perceive depth. In other words, objects (or people!) may appear closer or sometimes even farther than they actually are.

As you can see in the image above, our current set up will not be possible when Masses resume. If we do livestream Liturgies or events and programs, we will need to rethink our strategy. One thing is certain: we could never provide the direct, front view we now have.

Although I do continue to feel sad that we cannot gather physically, I am glad we can offer the opportunity for our community to worship online, a way in which we are more fortunate than many parishes. In fact, many from other par-ishes throughout the country and world join us!

As we continue our livestreams, know that we miss you, our community, greatly! We look forward to the day we can be in the Church together again. Until that day, be sure to stay in touch with us through our social media and subscribe to our YouTube channel to receive notifications of our up-coming videos.

Peace,Michael

Outreach MinistriesTHE PROJECT BREAD WALK FOR HUNGER:We know that we won’t be seeing thousands of Walkers heading down Beacon and Centre Streets next Sunday. However, Project Bread’s commitment, its mission, to families and elders facing food insecurity is still “on” and we are being challenged to help its rapid response to the COVID-19 crisis. Please join Project Bread on a virtual route to raise funds. You can donate online by going to the Project Bread website, selecting Walk for Hunger and heading to the TEAM IGNATIUS page: https://bit.ly/2Qr6f13. You can donate to a TEAM Walker or the TEAM itself.

Every single donation counts, no matter the amount!

CRS Rice Bowl 2020 has ended. There are two options for return-ing your Rice Bowl collection: you can make an online donation by going to the CRS/Rice Bowl website or you can send a check for your collected amount to St. Ignatius, with Rice Bowl on the memo

line, and it will be forwarded to CRS. We know CRS will be impacted by the health crisis, so whatever we can do for its mission will, without a doubt, be greatly appreciated.
