World Refugee Day 2019 - #WithMyOwn2Hands

As we celebrate World Refugee Day this coming Thurs-day, June 20th, Jesuit Relief Services [JRS/USA] is cel-ebrating through their website (https://www.jrsusa.org) “what refugees can do with their own two hands.” They will be sharing stories of refugees and in doing so give us the ability to use our “own two hands to help refugees not just survive, but thrive.”

Through our ARRUPE (Assisting Refugee Resettle-ment Using Parish Energies) program here at St. Ignatius, we have been offering, as many of you know, support and friendship for the past 14 months to Mulugeta Abay, a refugee from Eritrea.

With our hands joined to his two hands, Mulugeta is not simply surviving but thriving. After learning some English, he is gainfully employed at Nativity Prep in Ja-maica Plain. His job now allows him to handle his rent without relying on our parish’s financial help. Moreover, this being Father’s Day weekend, it is especially nice to announce that he has been able to connect with his three children in Ethiopia. He has not seen them in 10 years, so it will surely be an incredible reunion when he visits with them in Ethiopia for two months this summer.

Through your generosity to ARRUPE, we also are currently providing rental assistance to a mother and her children, refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo, now living in Lynn.

At this time, ARRUPE is considering accepting anoth-er refugee family. The one hesitation we have is that we need more parishioners to lend their two hands to help empower the hands of the family we sponsor. If you would like to be on the list of faithful volunteers sharing your two hands in service, please contact Joan Engler at [email protected].

May the mystery of the Most Blessed Trinity become our world’s mystery. May it therefore be a reminder to us that all our distinct and diverse cultures are called to be united as one under our one Triune God, a community of persons. Also, please join us in the JRS/USA prayer found on page 3.

Peace, Justice & Reconciliation CommissionGreen Team Prayer

O Lord, grant us the grace to grow deeper in our respect and care of our Creation. Help us to recognize the sacredness of all your creatures as signs of your wondrous love. O Lord, help us turn from selfish consumption of resources meant for all and to see the impacts of our choices on the poor

and vulnerable.Action

Consider keeping items from the school year that are still in good condition to be reused next year or at home. Re-ducing and reusing comes before recycling. This can save money, reduce waste and demonstrate your commitment to sustainability.

Scripture passage to pray about during the week:“the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the

Holy Spirit that has been given to us" Romans 5:5When the immigrant who is poor or just seems to be very dif-ferent from me looks into my eyes can she or he see the love

of God that the Holy Spirit has poured into my heart?

Gracious God, help us with St. Ignatius to imagine you looking over the wide world you have created and seeing the plight of your children, the sisters and brothers of

Jesus, who have been driven from their countries or forcibly displaced within them. We are stunned by the number of “our refugees,” greater than ever since World War II. But

you know them each by name–in Iraq and Syria, Jordan and Lebanon, Afghanistan and Myanmar, in country after coun-try in Africa, and now with new desperation in Venezuela

and Colombia. What has become of your world, loving God? How can it be so cruel to so many of the men and women created in

your own image and likeness? What hope is there for them? In fact, what is happening to them assaults our own hope.

Yes, there are stirring stories of their strength and resilience, their love of their children and the determination to see them in school, the fact that they can still dance and sing. Anyone who has visited them comes away with a bruised heart but one that also somehow beats stronger. How can

this be?Is it because you despite everything are truly with them,

accompanying them as a saving presence even if unseen by human eyes? That is what your prophets have told us. It is also at the center of the preaching of Jesus. Help us, Holy Mystery of our lives, to see you looking down in mercy on your poor and homeless. And then help us to see what our own presence to “our refugees” could be like. Help us, in all our frailty, to embody in some real ways your own pres-

ence. Their need is a sacrament for us.Lord, help us, with the blind man of the Gospel,

to see. Amen.Fr. Leo J. O’Donovan, S.J.

Evangelio. Amén.P. Leo J. O’Donovan, S.J.

Celebration of Fr. Peter Folan, S.J. Sunday, June 23rd | 11 a.m.

Vanderslice Hall - Cabaret Room

Peter Folan first came to Saint Ignatius in Chestnut Hill about 7 years ago to study theology. In that time, he was ordained first as a deacon, and later

a priest.

Since his arrival he has mostly remained in Boston and in our community while he pursued his Ph.D. at Boston College. Over these 7 years, Peter has

become an integral member of our parish community, beloved by many.

Father Peter will soon defend his dissertation and move on to a new role at Georgetown University as Rev. Dr. Peter - Assistant Professor in the Department of Theology and Religious Studies.

After the 10:00 a.m. Mass, we will host a potluck brunch next door to our church in Vanderslice Hall’s Cabaret Room for parishioners to say goodbye to Father Peter. Please bring a dish and join us in

thanking Fr. Peter and wishing him well.

We would like to invite you to begin a new liturgical practice at our Parish!

Many have expressed how awkward it feels, if they are not receiving from the Chalice, the Most Holy Blood, to just walk by it after receiving a blessing or partaking of the Bread, the Most Holy Body.

Beginning next weekend, when we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, we are inviting all parishioners not receiving from the Chalice to make a reverential gesture. For this gesture we suggest that you may either pause before the Chalice and lower your head in acknowledgment or you may actually take the Chalice in your own hands, pause momentarily, and then hand it back to the Eucharistic Minister.

If enough parishioners begin to incorporate this practice into their regular worship, others, even visitors, may begin to adopt this devotional act as well.

Our hope is that this new practice will be a real opportunity for our parish community to become more fully engaged in the "source and summit of the Christian life,” that is, in the celebration of the Eucharist which includes both the bread and the wine, the Most Holy Body and the Most Holy Blood.
