Earlier this month, the Ignatian Young Adult Committee at the Parish began a new series introducing people in their 20s and 30s to Ignatian Spirituality
called “Finding God In …”
Theconceptof “findingGodinallthings”iscentraltoIgnatianSpiritualityandthefirstforayintothisthemewasaneveningof reflectioncalled“FindingGodInPrayer.”Asa member of the IYA committee and as a religion teacher at St. IgnatiusLoyolaGrammarSchool, I am always eager toshare the experience of prayer with peers, colleagues, and students. For me, prayer has been a gift and a mystery, something that is received, and that has been unfolding in different ways throughoutmy life. At this timeof Thanksgiving, I am truly grateful for how the shared experience of prayer in the Christian community has brought me closer to Jesus, to my true self, and to greater freedom in responding to God’s invitations in my everyday life. The“Finding God” program has reminded me again of this great gift of prayer and how it is so profoundly expressed in the Spiritual Exercisesof St.IgnatiusLoyola. It has been almost six years since I completed a thirty-day retreat in the Spiritual Exercises, but the graces of this time set apart for prayer continue to unfoldinmylife.Attheheartof theExercises is a threefold movementinprayer. First, it leadsthepeoplemakingtheretreattoadeepenedawarenessof thegiftsintheirlife.Next,it calls forth gratitude for a God who has blessed us with these giftsandwhodesirestogiveusGod’sveryself. Finally, itleadsustoafreedomtorespondinlovethroughalifeof service. Thefinalmeditationof theExercises, the “Contem-plationtoAttainLove,”invitesonetoprayforthegraceof “interior knowledge of all the great good I have received, in order that, stirred to profound gratitude, I may be able to loveandserveGodinallthings.”Eachmeditationcallsfora “composition of place” in which we imagine the landscape of our prayer and place ourselves into the scene using all of ourfivesenses.Duringthesceneof thefinalcontemplation,we imagine ourselves standing before God and all the angels
and saints, and we express both our gratitude and our desire forthefreedomtorespondinlove.
Onthefirstnightof myretreatIsatdowntowriteinmyjournalandtoaskGodforthegracethatIdesired.Iwrotethe following: “I want to turn to you, Jesus, in a new way and giveallthatIam,myentireself.Take,Lord, andreceivewhatIoffertoyouinthesethirtydaysof silenceandprayer.”AtthetimeIdidnotknowthatSt.Ignatiushaddesignedtheretreatto endwith the“Contemplation toAttainLove.” Ignatiussuggests that the focus of the meditation should be on this
understandingof love: “Loveconsistsin sharing what one has and what one is withthoseoneloves.Loveoughttoshowitself indeedsmorethaninwords.”
I came to the Spiritual Exercises almost six years ago wanting to meet the Lordinanewway.Jesuswasfaithfultomy desire and poured out his grace in ways that I could not even imagine or dream.Iendedtheretreatinsomewayas I began it, but in a very real way starting anew, with a true and wonderful new beginning in my relationship with God andinmylifeof prayer.OnretreatJesusshowed me that his way of love calls each of us to a deeper commitment and a total self-giving.Itisalovemanifestinprayerand in everyday life, sometimes clearly
and boldly, sometimes quietly and subtly, but always drawing usforwardandinvitingustomore—whatSt.Ignatiuscalled“TheMagis,”expressedsowellintheJesuitcharism,“Livingforthegreatergloryof God.”
During this Thanksgiving weekend, I find myself filledwithasenseof deepgratitudeforthegiftof prayer, thegrace of the Exercises, and the experience of praying with fellow companions of Jesus in the Church of St. IgnatiusLoyola.Whatawonderfultimetoreflectandsharetogetheron the gifts of God in our lives, the ways in which Jesus has loved us into greater self-surrender, and how we are called to respond to the unfolding mystery of prayer!

TAKING FLIGHT:
The Holy Family’s Flight into Egypt and the Refugees of Today
Monday, December 6th, 7:00 PM in Wallace Hall
A slide lecture by Rev. Leo O’Donovan, S.J., reflecting on the story of the flight into Egypt (told only in Matthew’s Gospel) and how it has been imagined in Western art from the medieval period onwards. The domestication of the narrative will be contrasted with the plight of refugees and displaced persons today. What sort of imagery may offer the Gospel’s good news of hope and courage to men and women in flight today?
Fr. O’Donovan is President emeritus of Georgetown University and a past president of the
Catholic Theological Society of America.
