Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading for next Sun., August 31, 2014

Theme: The cross is a way that leads to true life.

Breaking Open the Word-Suggested text for faith sharing: Gospel Mt 16:21-27

Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.” Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all according to his conduct.”

Step One: Listen to the Word-When you hear the Gospel proclaimed today, what words or phrases really strike you? What lingers in your memory from this reading?

Step Two: Look into Your Life

Question for Children: Jesus tells us that we each are called to follow him. What is hard for you to do to follow Jesus?

Question for Youth: In order to follow Jesus, we have to do hard things, to carry our own crosses. What is a cross that you are carrying right now? In what ways can you ask Jesus to help you with your cross? Question for Adults: Jesus gives us the core truth to life and eternal happiness — the cross. Name the cross that you carry. How is it bringing you closer to God?

Stewardship Thought For the Week

In today’s readings, St. Paul reminds the Romans- and us-that all things come from God. “For from Him and through Him and for Him all things are.” Good STEWARDS understand that all is a gift, and share generously the gifts of time, talent and treasure with which they have been blessed.

Living Stewardship We are grateful this week for all STEWARDS in our parish who strive to make their gifts grow and to share them lovingly, in justice, with others.

STEWARDSHIP

Leaders of all Ministries who are requesting to use the parish facilities, must submit their Facilities Usage Form to schedule their meetings and any special event they may be planning. It is important to hand this information into the rectory before August 27, 2014. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.

Family Life Committee

Have you noticed some of the "Family Friendly" activities and events at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish over these recent months? (Family Mass, Night with St. Nick, Easter Egg giveaway etc.) They are put on courtesy of the recently formed Family Life Committee. We have more things planned and we'd love to do bigger and better things for the parish, but our small committee could really use some help! We are looking for people who can help us plan, shop, decorate, and most im-portantly, help out the day of our events. Impor-tant: because we are working with children and families, volunteers must be VIRTUS trained and approved (diocese child safety program). You can check the Diocese of Rockville Centre website www.drvc.org for training dates. In the meantime, if you would like to help, please con-tact Sue at 433-2634/ [email protected] or Suzanne at 653-1634/[email protected]
