The Mysteries of the Rosary, Chapter Thirteen: The Visita on, con nued…

Prayer is always the most important response to any disaster, including the catastrophic situa on in the Church today. That’s why I decided not to interrupt my ongoing series of medita ons on the Rosary in this column. There are many things you and I can do in response to the current crisis, but if they aren’t preceded by prayer and accompanied by prayer they will not accomplish anything good.

In my last column, I wrote about how the Blessed Virgin Mary said to Elizabeth: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my savior.” (Luke 1:46-47). What does it mean to “rejoice in God”? Among other things, it means to be aware that even if things look bleak,

God, who is Love, has ul mate power and will win in the end.

Things could have looked bleak to Mary as she was on her way to visit Elizabeth. The Jews were living under foreign occupa on. Many of their civil and religious leaders were dishonest and corrupt. Mary herself had a kind and loving husband, but she was probably the subject of ridicule and gossip by people who didn’t know that Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit. To many of her neighbors, she probably seemed to be a great sinner, who had violated the expecta on that a young woman ge ng married should be a virgin. Mary may not have had much to rejoice in if she just looked at earthly circumstances. But she looked beyond those immediate circumstances to the eternal God.

I’m reminded of a scene in the book “The Return of the King,” by J.R.R. Tolkien. (It’s in the movie version too.) Frodo and Sam are in the Land of Mordor, ruled by the Dark Lord Sauron, trying to get undetected to Mount Doom to destroy the Ring of Power that Sauron had made, and so to destroy the Shadow that is threatening all of the free peoples of Middle Earth. They are hungry, thirsty, exhausted and thoroughly discouraged. As they are taking a rest, leaning against some rocks in the barren landscape, suddenly a break appears in the dark clouds overhead. Sam looks up and sees a star.

In the book, we read: “The beauty of it smote his heart, as he looked up out of the forsaken land, and hope returned to him. For like a sha , clear and cold, the thought pierced him that in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach.” In the movie version, Sam says: “Mr. Frodo, look! There is light and beauty up there that no shadow can touch.”

In the same way, the light of God has come into the world in Jesus Christ. Mary knew this and also knew what Saint John wrote in his Gospel: “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:4-5) Mary, pray for us, that we may see beyond all darkness to the Light that no shadow can touch.

Yours in Jesus with Mary, Father Rudolph

Peter (in Spanish, Pedro) was born in 1580 into a devout working-class family at Verdú, Catalonia, Spain. At the age of twenty-two he joined the Jesuits. While he was studying in college, he was inspired by the porter there, Saint Alphonsus Rogriguez, with the idea of going as a missionary to serve in the New World. In April of 1610, Peter le Spain. He was never to return. A er a difficult journey he arrived with his companions in Cartagena, in what is now Colombia. He con nued his studies and was ordained to the priesthood on March 19, 1616. He then embarked on the ministry he would con nue for the rest of his life, serving the slaves who had been kidnapped from Africa. The popes of the me condemned the slave trade as a great evil, but those who bought and sold slaves ignored them. The slaves suffered horribly on the ships by the me they arrived in Colombia; a third of them died on the way, and the survivors were o en very sick. Peter, along with his assistants, met them as they got off the ships. They “spoke with their hands” before using words, trying to comfort them with medicines, food, brandy, lemons and tobacco. Peter also learned Angolan, since many of the slaves were from there, and was helped by teams of interpreters who knew other African languages. A er this ini al contact, he presented the Gospel to them, using not only words but pictures. Some were his own, but he also used 161 illustra ons from Bartolomeo Ricci’s book Vita Domini Nostri Jesus Chris (“Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ”). Peter is said to have instructed and bap zed over 300,000 slaves in the course of forty years, and to have heard the confessions of more than five thousand slaves in a single year. He also made efforts to make sure slaves were treated humanely by their masters. In addi on, he carried on a ministry to prisoners, listening to their stories, consoling them and absolving them. On top of his ministry to slaves, Peter reached out to traders and sailors. This included an annual mission in which he would stand for hours in the great square of the city preaching to any who would listen to him. A number of conversions to the Catholic faith from Protestan sm resulted. He was less successful among the Muslims, but some of them did convert, including one man who held out for thirty years un l he was finally convinced by a vision of Our Lady. In 1650, Peter went to preach a mission among the Africans who lived along the coast. He had not been there long when he got sick and had to return to Cartagena. For the rest of his life he was in constant pain, and an uncontrollable tremor prevented him from celebra ng Mass. He died on September 8, 1654. Saint Peter Claver, pray for us! FATHER RAPHAEL AKURUNGU Our wonderful seminarian Deacon Raphael is now Fr. Raphael following his ordina on on July 28, 2018. He has been appointed to St. Paul’s Parish in a town called Walewale in the Northern Region of Ghana where he is excited to serve among the Mamprusi people.

Fr. Raphael’s greatest challenge at this me is acquiring a vehicle for his apostolate. He greatly needs more reliable transporta on to help him get around this parish in rural Ghana. He is hoping to raise $25,000-$30,000 so that he can buy a car. Fr. Raphael says, “I have faith and hope in God’s providence, first and foremost, in taking care of his own children whom I will be ministering to and also giving me what is necessary for me to be His effec ve instrument and channel of grace”. “It has been the greatest honor celebra ng Mass every day and being God’s ‘Alter Christus’. A mixture of humility and of high privilege of being and ac ng as God’s Priest and instrument. Please, pray for me to remain faithful, humble and open to the working of God’s grace.” A special collec on will be taken up at Mass the weekend of September 15th and 16th. Monies raised will be sent to Fr. Raphael to be used toward the purchase of a reliable car to help him get around his parish. Checks can be made out to the Church of St. Raphael. St. Raphael will then write one check for the total amount collected to Fr. Raphael.

What a blessing that we can use this opportunity to be “God’s ny instruments” and share in the ministry of Fr. Raphael.
