Reflections ~ Reflexiones GGoossppeell:: MMaarrkk 11::4400––4455

Today's Gospel describes a man who is so excited and happy that he has to tell everyone he meets what has happened to him. The man with leprosy firmly believed that Jesus could cure him and he begged Jesus to do so. Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand, touched the afflicted man, and said, "Be cured." And the man's illness was immediately healed. Although Jesus instructed him to speak only to the priest about his cure, the man could not restrain himself. He told so many people that Jesus had to retreat to the desert to avoid the crowds who followed him everywhere. When you feel especially blessed by God, what do you do about it? How do you share your feelings about your experiences of God's love and his healing power?

Treasures from our Traditions ~ Tradiciones de nuestra Fe What would you say is the oldest, most frequently sung, most translated, most memorized, most beloved song text in the Christian world today? An astute and surprising answer might be the Gloria, “Glory to God in the Highest.” Soon the Lenten fast will begin, and the Gloria, sung at the beginning of Sunday Mass, will be silenced. It is an heirloom from a treasury of hymns spun from the songs of praise on the lips of Mary, Elizabeth, and Zachary. We move in the prayer from the song of the angels at the first Christmas, to the praise of God, and to a final plea to Christ to continue and complete his work in us. For nearly 1500 years, the singing of the Gloria has been a sign of the festive quality of a particular Mass. From the beginning it was a song of the people, not of the choir or clergy. These last few Sundays of winter Ordinary Time allow us a chance to savor the hymn and give ourselves over to the chorus. How is the song of praise arising from your pew? If you claim the song as yours, its absence from Lent will be more striking, and its return at Easter will cheer your heart. —Rev. James Field, CCooppyyrriigghhtt ©© JJ.. SS.. PPaalluucchh CCoo..

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, CCooppyyrriigghhtt ©© JJ.. SS.. PPaalluucchh CCoo..

Monday: Presidents’ Day Tuesday: Mardi Gras;

Shrove Tuesday Wednesday: Ash Wednesday; Fast and Abstinence; Almsgiving Friday: Abstinence

Gracious God, today begins a period of inner reflection and examination. The days stretch before me and invite me inward to that silent, holy space that holds your Spirit. This special time beckons me to see my life through Christ's eyes and the truth and reality of your love incarnate. Give me the grace to enter the space of these days with anticipation of our meeting. And, when I open my soul to your presence, let your loving kindness flow over me and seep into the pockets of my heart. I ask this for the sake of your love. Amen. (source: catholic.org)

You were a man of suffering acquainted with grief, loved and despised in equal measure. You understand humanity, know our failings, love us despite the people that we are. When we, like Peter, deny you by word or action, forgive us. When we, like Judas, are tempted to follow a different path, forgive us. When we, like those in the crowd allow you to be crucified, forgive us. Bring us to the foot of the Cross to stand next to the one who, looking into your eyes declared 'Surely this is the Son of God'. Amen. (source: catholic.org)

Epiphany Parish News

AASSHH WWEEDDNNEESSDDAAYY 22002211 We have all had a year filled with different ways of living and praying. As we mark the beginning of Lent, we once again need to adapt our practices to preserve the health of all worshippers, while following the ancient traditions of the Church. Therefore, this year, instead of tracing a cross of ashes on the forehead, ashes will be distributed by the ancient custom of sprinkling over the crown of the head. This practice is used extensively in Europe and the Holy See has mandated it be used throughout the world this year. After the homily, the priest will bless the ashes as usual and recite the invocation over everyone. With masks on, each worshipper will come forward in a line. When you reach the minister, please bow your head slightly and the minister will sprinkle ashes onto the crown of your head. Note that neither the minister nor the receiver says anything. Once you have received ashes, you can return to your seat. The Archbishop of San Francisco has asked that other than the regularly scheduled daily Mass of the parish, parishes have Liturgies of the Word in order to distribute ashes. This is again a health and safety issue, and completely allowed for by the Rite and the Vatican.

FFEEAASSTT OOFF FFAAIITTHH The Gloria (2)

The Gloria is a rejoicing prayer, an exclamation of praise. It begins with the song of the angels at the announcement of the birth of Jesus (Luke 2:14), a heavenly burst of praise for God’s loving action in the world. But in the Gloria, the song goes on, leaping, as it were, from height to height, with every kind of praise, blessing, adoration, glory, and thanksgiving. We begin by thanking and praising God the Father; then we turn our gaze to Christ, the Lamb of God. The paschal mystery of Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection is found here, at the heart of this prayer, which descends to the depths with Christ, but then rises with him to the heavens, where he is seated at the Father’s right hand. The Gloria ends with a series of acclamations to Christ, emphasizing over and over that he “alone” is the Holy One, the Lord, the Most High, truly God, with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Our prayer of praise ends where it began, in the “glory of God the Father.” The Gloria, with its arc leading us from the glory of God to the suffering of Christ and again to glory, is the pattern of the Mass itself. At the center of all our prayer is the sacrificial love of Christ. —Corinna Laughlin, CCooppyyrriigghhtt ©© JJ.. SS.. PPaalluucchh CCoo..

Lenten Regulations: ABSTINENCE: All who have reached their 14th birthday are to abstain from eating meat on all Fridays during Lent. FASTING: All those who are 18 and older, until their 59th birthday, are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Only one full meal is allowed on days of fast. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together, they should not equal a full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. The obligation does not apply to those whose health or ability to work would be seriously affected. People in doubt about fasting or abstinence should consult a parish priest.

BBAAPPTTIISSMMSS Please be aware that Baptisms are not scheduled during Lent. Baptisms will resume after Easter on Sunday, April 11th 2021.

—Miguel Arias, CCooppyyrriigghhtt ©© JJ.. SS.. PPaalluucchh CCoo..
