Reflections ~ Reflexiones GGoossppeell:: MMaatttthheeww 44::1122--2233

Once again the Gospel focuses on Jesus as the Promised One of the Old Testament. Jesus began his preaching in Galilee and is identified by Matthew as the "great light" foretold by Isaiah. Jesus' first message to God's people is a powerful one. He says that we should reform our lives, or repent, for "the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” "To repent”, means that we take a complete change of direction in our lives. After John was put in jail, Jesus knew that it was his time to prepare God's people for the Kingdom. So he chose a new place to live (Capernaum by the sea) and "began to preach." Jesus made a new beginning. 1.) When have you made a new beginning? 2.) How can you make a new beginning today in some area of your life?

1.) ¿Cuándo has empezado de nuevo? 2.)

One of God's main jobs is making people. The other is listening to prayers. God is busy, so don't waste God's time asking for something your parents said "No" to. Jesus is God's Son. He was good and kind, performing miracles and teaching people who didn't want to learn about God. They

got tired of Jesus and crucified him. Jesus asked God to forgive them and God said OK. God said Jesus didn't have to go on the road anymore, but could stay in heaven and help his Dad (God) out. You can pray any time because one of them's always on duty. Always go to Mass on Sunday because it makes God happy. It's good to know God's always around when you're scared of the dark or big kids. You shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. God put me here so it's up to me to figure out what I can do for God. Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

For all of the parishioners who will be going to the pilgrimage to Portugal, France and Spain from February 16th to the 28th, please be advised that there will be an orientation on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 2:00pm in the school cafeteria.

DDAAIILLYY DDOOSSEESS OOFF LLIIGGHHTT Jesus assures us: “God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5b). But how, exactly, does God’s light overcome the darkness that we still experience? Saint Paul shows us how: through the cross. Today’s reading from Paul’s First Letter to the Corinthians implores Jesus’ followers to get along with one another, to “be united in the same mind and in the same purpose.” We believe that two thousand years ago, Jesus saved the world and destroyed darkness; but until Jesus comes again, we must unite as the Body of Christ to continue pushing back the gloom of sin and division. As followers of Jesus, we work against these evils in simple ways. We intentionally attempt genuine conversation with a person we find irritating; we ignore gossip and refuse to talk behind someone’s back; we befriend an awkward or needy individual. These daily doses of light bring hope to our world, which is both redeemed and not yet finished. Jesus wants our help. Like Peter, James, and John in today’s Gospel, we are called by Christ to participate in salvation. Jesus chooses us, calls us, and invites us to accompany him—and imitate him—as we live in, and wait for, the Light of the World. CCooppyyrriigghhtt ©© JJ.. SS.. PPaalluucchh CCoo..

CCAARRRRYY TTHHEE LLOOAADD The chief thing is to take the burden on one’s shoulders. As you press forward, it soon shakes down and the load is evenly distributed. —St. John Bosco

AADDOORRAATTIIOONN SSIIGGNN UUPPSS Please visit the vestibule to sign up for an hour for our First Friday Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament on February 7th from 8:30am to 8:00pm. Please keep in mind that our Lord Jesus Christ should never be left alone during Exposition.

SSEEEEKKIINNGG TTHHEE LLIIGGHHTT In today’s readings we find ourselves being drawn more deeply into relationship with Jesus. We are getting to know more about him as we see how he struggles with the news of his cousin John’s arrest. His first response is to withdraw, to leave Nazareth and go to Capernaum. There he is perhaps both consoled and challenged by the words of Isaiah that Matthew quotes: “the people who sit in darkness have seen a great light, / on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death / light has arisen” (Matthew 4:16). Jesus contemplates his cousin’s death, perhaps his own death, and he seeks the light. Maybe it is these words of Isaiah that move Jesus out of his withdrawal and into action. He begins to preach, teach, cure disease and illness, and proclaim the gospel of the kingdom. CCooppyyrriigghhtt ©© JJ.. SS.. PPaalluucchh CCoo..

BBEEAAUUTTYY AANNDD TTRRUUTTHH Today the poetry of Isaiah washes over us with stunning beauty: Anguish has taken wing, dispelled is darkness: for there is no gloom where but now there was distress. Isaiah’s lines enchant us with their music as well as with their meaning. Haven’t we all felt burdened by gloom and distress? Don’t we all long for an end to darkness? Isaiah promises that God’s majestic strength crushes our anguish, blowing away our troubles on a breeze. These words are lovely, but what do they mean for us really, when our day-to-day struggles are so real? How can it be true that darkness is dispelled, when so many of us suffer terribly? Our Parish, the Archdiocese of San Francisco Mental Health Ministry Advisory Group, and the Pastoral Ministry Department invite you to an evening workshop, “Mental Health Wellness and the Church - Reaching Out to Families Experiencing Mental Health Challenges” Wednesday, January 29th, 2020 from 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Church of the Epiphany, School Cafeteria, 827 Vienna St, San Francisco, CA 94112 At the workshop, you will learn about the Mental Health Ministry Network being established by the Archdiocese of San Francisco, what it will mean for our parish to participate, and what ministry opportunities will be available to parishioners. Prayerfully supported by parish lay leaders and receiving professional care, families experiencing mental health challenges will find wholeness, and together, we’ll work to end the stigma that still endures when mental health is challenged. The workshop is open to all parishioners and free of charge. For questions or for more information, contact Dick Collyer at 415-614-5593 or Fr. Tungol at 415-333-7630.
