Reflections ~ Reflexiones GGoossppeell MMaatttthheeww:: 2211:: 3333--4433 Jesus compares God to a vineyard owner whose messengers go to the tenants of the vineyard to collect his share of the grapes at harvest time. But the tenants beat, stone, or murder the owner's messengers. When the owner sends his son, the tenants treat him as they did the messenger. They kill the son, hoping to keep the vineyard, his inheritance, for themselves. The son in the parable is Jesus, of course, and the messengers are God's prophets, who speak in God's name. Jesus is reminding us that the kingdom will be taken away from those who do not give God a harvest of good works. 1.) When Jesus was telling the story of what happened to the prophets and to the son, how do you think he must have felt? Are we rejecting any of God's messengers, or in any way rejecting Jesus? How can we accept Jesus and his messengers in our lives? What prayers can help us offer the harvest of our lives and work to God?

CCooppyyrriigghhtt ((cc)) 22001100,, WWoorrlldd LLiibbrraarryy PPuubblliiccaattiioonnss.. AAllll rriigghhttss rreesseerrvveedd..

OURS We live in a time when politicians, heads of corporations, bankers, and others have acted with outrageous greed and selfishness, and there have been devastating consequences. Add to that the troubles in our Church, and we wonder if there has ever been a worse time than this. The answer is yes: in the fourteenth century the bubonic plague killed half the population of Europe; in 1960, forty million people died of famine in China. The list of violent, tyrannical rulers stretches from the Roman Emperor Caligula and Ivan the Terrible to Hitler, Stalin, and Mao Tse Tung. The world harbors all kinds of evil, and nowadays we hear about it very fast. But there is much more room for hope than we might think. Matthew was writing his Gospel for a community of Jewish Christians whose new faith set them apart from other Jews. All were living under the oppressive rule of Roman conquerors. The vineyard Matthew speaks of is like the world. God resembles the landowner, who created it and made it fruitful. So who are the evil tenants? For Matthew's community it was these Jewish leaders who grasped at power, collaborated with Rome, and cooperated in the killing of God's Son. But the Kingdom cannot be taken by force, and those who wreak havoc in God's world will face God's justice in this life or the next. In the meantime, it is our task to tend the Lord's vineyard. We can each contribute, from the smallest deeds of charity in our own daily lives, to exercising morality and ethics in the work place, to acting as responsible citizens, and striving to welcome and love the forgotten, the lost, and the most oppressed among us. Never lose heart and never give up; the Kingdom is ours.Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Living Stewardship Now:. "Great works do not always lie in our way, but every moment we may do little ones excellently, that is, with great love." --Saint Francis de Sales (1567-1622), bishop, missionary, and patron saint of writers

TTrreeaassuurreess FFrroomm OOuurr TTrraaddiittiioonn:: Before long, as we’ve seen, the four newly constructed Eucharistic Prayers became two. The old Roman Canon faded away into relative disuse after 1600 unbroken years, sometimes heard only at Christmas Midnight Mass or the Easter Vigil. The new Eucharistic Prayer IV, at least in its English form, grates a bit on most hearers, and besides is meant only for Ordinary Time. The reconstruction of the ancient prayer of Hippolytus, Eucharistic Prayer II, is the most familiar, but its brevity sometimes creates an imbalance with the Liturgy of the Word. No wonder that as soon as the creative juices began to flow at the Vatican, people worldwide were trying their hands at new prayers. In 1967, even before the final shape of the new Mass was announced, bishops were asking to adapt that celebration for the needs of children. They wanted to clarify what ought to happen when large numbers of children are at Mass: what could be adapted, omitted, or shortened. Experimentation had already begun. Separate Liturgies of the Word for children were by this time commonplace in Holland and elsewhere in Europe. Catechists were saying that many of our liturgical forms were too complex for the children in their charge, and priests were making adaptations on their own. Clearly, the Vatican had to take this seriously.—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WWoorrlldd MMiissssiioonn SSuunnddaayy:: Every year, something special happens on the next-to-last Sunday of October—the world unites. On World Mission Sunday, Catholics of the world unite at Mass to recommit ourselves to our vocation, through Baptism, to be missionaries. As we pray and respond on World Mission Sunday here at home, we are replicating what is taking place in every parish and chapel all over the world. Our brothers and sisters in the Missions themselves offer their prayers and sacrifices so that others may come to know Jesus! In a world where so much divides us, World Mission Sunday rejoices in our unity as missionaries! And it provides an opportunity to support the life-giving presence of the Church among the suffering and the poor in more than 1,150 mission dioceses throughout the Developing World.
