Reflections ~ Reflexiones

Pastor’s Message~ Mensaje del Párroco THE ENVELOPE, PLEASE It's just a plain envelope wedged among the branches of our Christmas tree. It's been there every Christmas for several years. My husband used to hate Christmas: the birth of our Savior swamped with consumerism, overspending, and frantic searches for gifts on a long list. I wished I could help him feel differently. Inspiration struck as we were watching our older son's karate team in a match-up with a team from a poorer section of town. My husband, who had served as a coach himself, pointed out that the visiting team members were in karate outfits, but obvious hand-me-downs in the wrong sizes. Our team was immaculately turned out and confidently won every round of their matches. I began to wonder what it might do for the morale of these kids if they had proper uniforms to wear. I found a place to buy uniforms and sent them anonymously to their coach. On Christmas Eve I placed an envelope on the tree with a note inside telling my husband that the uniforms were my gift to him. On Christmas morning I got the happiest smile from him that I had seen in ages, and so began a new tradition in our family. One year I sent a group of teens with disabilities on a visit to the local aquarium. Another year I sent boxes of food and household items to a family whose home had burned down. The envelope was always the last Christmas present opened and our growing family always looked forward to seeing what was inside. Sadly, my husband died last year. Imagine my surprise on Christmas morning to find four white envelopes on the tree, each containing my children's gifts in their father's memory. I cried with happiness as my excited grandchildren crowded round, saying, "Open the envelopes, Gran!" Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Gospel: John 1: 1-5,9-14 The images of seeing and hearing continue in the gospel. John tells us that what we hear and see is God's own Son, Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh. He came among us as one of us for our human eyes to see and love and welcome. Jesus came to be with us, to teach us about his Father, and to tell us about God's kingdom. What can we do to show Jesus that we love and welcome him? We can worship him. We can talk with him, telling him of our hopes and dreams. We can try to be people who bring his peace and light and joy everywhere we go. 1.) One of the themes of this gospel is light. How does light "reveal" what is in a dark place? What is darkness in our world? What is light? When someone speaks, that person's words can reveal what they are like. Sometimes Jesus is called "the Word of God." Find the places in this gospel where we are told something about the Word.

Epiphany Parish News

Dear Parishioner, Christmas is a time of anticipation. Children and adults both wait anxiously for weeks, days and hours to tick down to Christmas. Advent is our time of spiritual anticipation. Just as Mary did,we watch and wait in hope for the birth of our Lord. We prepare ourselves for His arrival with penance and prayer. Take some extra time this Christmas and wait alongside our blessed Mother for the birth of Christ. Merry Christmas to all from Church of the Epiphany & Staff

Donations Statements: Your 2016 donation tax statements will be mailed out no later than Saturday, January 28th. Please contact Jenny at the church office (415) 333-7630 ext 10 with any questions or if there has been a change in your mailing address so that we can be sure you receive your statement in a timely manner. TTHHEE GGIIFFTT OOFF GGOODD’’SS WWOORRDD:: On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God’s Word. Because it is creative, God’s Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God’s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God’s Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God. At the heart of God’s Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning. Once accepted and opened, the gift of God’s Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the gift-giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Parish Office: The parish office will be closed on Monday, December 26 and will re-open on Tuesday, December 27 at 8:30am. The parish office will also be closed on Monday, January 2 and will re-open on Tuesday, January 3.

Thank You…Thank you!!! We would like to thank everyone who have helped make this Christmas so wonderful. Everyone from those who donated to the Giving Tree and for the plants to the homebound, all our Lectors & Eucharistic Ministers, everyone who attended and participated in our Parish Novena, those who helped decorate and clean the church, those who donated poinsettias for our altar, everyone who gave a Christmas donation to the church and anyone else we missed. Epiphany is very grateful and blessed to have friends like you. Thank you and may God grant you peace, good health and love this coming New Year! Rev. Eugene Tungol Pastor

TTRREEAASSUURREESS FFRROOMM OOUURR TTRRAADDIITTIIOONN:: An old joke asks, “What time is Midnight Mass?” The answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in having several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of Jesus and his origins. The concept of “midnight” predates clock time, and really has to do with a celebration in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Communion without fasting for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possible for the people to receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as “The Shepherds’ Mass,” and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus’ birth to focus on the key to the day’s celebration: John the Evangelist’s majestic theology of Christ’s identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separate Masses. Only monasteries manage the whole round. Parishioners typically take just one entry point into the mystery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the coming of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a season. You still have two weeks to send those Christmas cards before you’re officially late! —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

The School of the Epiphany does not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of race, color, and national and/or ethnic origin, age, sex, or disability in the administration of educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs. 13th Annual Walk for life: The annual Walk for Life West Coast, which draws 50,000 participants each year, takes place on January 21. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone begins the day with a special Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral at 9:30 am. The Walk for Life Rally begins at 10:45 am at the starting point of the Walk, at Civic Center Plaza. The Goal is to be a vocal and visual message, to reach out to women harmed by abortion, and to inform society of the damage done to women by abortion. The Action is to peaceably protest abortion, walking through San Francisco every year on or near January 22, the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. Visit the Walk for Life West Coast website for resources, updates, and complete information. English, Spanish, and Chinese flyers are online.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
