Bus delays, cancellation information available on STOPR website

At the Peel District School Board, we are committed to providing safe and efficient transportation services for our students to and from school every day. Transportation staff do their best to ensure that buses arrive and leave on time, but sometimes, delays happen. Information about delays may not always be available through the school, especially if they happen outside of the school day. The best place for find information about bus delays and cancellations, as they happen, is the Student Transportation of Peel Region (STOPR) website at www.stopr.ca. To find information specific to your child's bus, you will need the bus route number. School starts promptly at 9:15 am. Students arriving after 9:15 must report to the office for a late slip before going to class. Please arrive on time to avoid the loss of instructional time and unnecessary safe arrival calls to parents. Once again, our lost and found has been growing and growing. We are hoping that you can stop by and have a look to see if anything belongs to you. Anything remaining will be donated to a local charity on March 11th, 2016. The Lost and Found box is located in the Kindergarten Hallway beside the gym doors.

A reminder to our families that we are accepting Kindergarten registrations for children born in 2012. Please share this information with your neighbours. Due to the cancellation of busses on March 2nd, our Snow Valley trip and Winter Play Day was unfortunately cancelled. We are happy to inform everyone that the trip and Winter Play Day have been rescheduled to Tuesday, March 8th. Please review the information letter containing important information that will be sent home on Friday, March 4th. We look forward to a fun filled day both on the hill and at school for all students. Please ensure that students are dressed appropriately for outdoor play.

The library was filled with a variety of activities this month for both staff and students. Staff had the opportunity to celebrate Chinese New Year through the amazing chopstick race in the Churchville learning commons while being cheered on by the students.

Our grade 3 students hosted the Peel Aboriginal Network and learned about aboriginals through the "I am Aboriginal" presentation.

We also had a school visit with Sharon McKay, a celebrated Canadian author. Sharon inspired students in Grades 4, 5, 6 and 7 with her wit and passion for writing.

In celebration of Black History month, our school Trustee Kathy McDonald dropped by for a story telling session with our students. The Silver Birch reading club has students in Gr. 5 and 6 who love to read and talk about books. Mark your Calendar: Scholastic Book Fair takes place April 14-21st, and Wear Blue to School day for students in K, Gr. 1 and Gr. 2 takes place on Friday April 22nd!

Camp I Can will be offered at Churchville over the March Break. This program is an education program that focuses on hands on education learning activities where students learn through collaboration and active participation. The camp will run from Monday, March 14th to Wednesday, March 16th from 9 am to 3 pm daily. The cost to attend the camp is $10. Please contact Mr. Zizek for more details about the program as space is limited. Our PALS (Playground Activity Leaders in Schools) program is up and running during nutrition breaks. Student leaders in grade 4 and 5 have been trained to play games of low organization with our primary students.

In the Churchville Kindergarten program we use different levels of technology to create and innovate. We make, test and remake. Last week, students made robots out of boxes, elastics and markers. After our robots were completed we added motors, wiring, and batteries to the project. Students had to assemble the motor independently. If they got stuck? More questions from the teacher to facilitate exploration. When the motor was working we attached it to our robots, and set them on paper. Our robots made beautiful patterns that inspired more questions. What shapes did they draw? Why did this robot fall over after only a few lines? Why did the circles get bigger? We thought out problems, tested our designs, and used technology to be creative. Most importantly we realized that we could all be makers.

These photos demonstrate hands-on activities happening in 2B. Students designed and tested boats and made yummy waffles. Later we created a procedure using the app Puppet Edu.

A Celebration of African Culture Through the Arts Beaux-Arts Gallery, February 2016

The talent and creativity of Churchville’s Gr.6 and 7 Studio Artists was celebrated at Beaux-Arts

Gallery in Brampton throughout the week of Feb. 8-13. It was an amazing experience for our young artists to have their work displayed in a gallery for all to see!

The exhibit focused on celebrating African culture through the Arts, and artists had a lot of fun creating a variety of African-inspired pieces such as masks, paper bead jewellery, instruments,

TingaTinga paintings and Bogolanfini mudcloths.

At the Gala event, families came together to celebrate and appreciate the creativity and talent of their children. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces and proud moments!

MUSIC NEWS

The music department has been hopping with events! Churchville’s Glee Club and Orff Crew were selected to perform in front of a large audience at the Peel District School Board's Spotlight on Black Heritage Month event! We were also invited to bring some musical entertainment to the Beaux Arts Gallery. We ended the month of February with a school wide performance celebrating Black History month that featured dancing, instrumental performances, singing, movement, and spoken word, depicting through the arts all that Churchville students have learned about Black History! Stay tuned for more performances at our Day of Pink celebration in April and our Grand Opening in May!

SNAP! (Remove the face cards for these games.)

Number recognition Players split the deck of cards and simultaneously flip over the top cards. The player who flips the card with the greater value must make a mathematical statement in order to win the round. For example, “8 is greater than 6.” If the players flip cards of equal value, they must both make a statement such as, “5 is equal to 5.” Then both players will flip an additional card. The player who has the card of greater value must make a mathematical statement to win the cards from both rounds! Addition Players split the deck of cards and simultaneously flip over the top two cards. Each player finds the sum of his/her cards and makes a mathematical statement. For example, if Player A flips a 6 and an 8, he/she would say, “When I add 6 and 8, the sum is 14.” If Player B flips a 4 and a 9, then he/she would say, “When I add 4 and 9, the sum is 13.” The player who flips the cards with the greatest sum must make a mathematical statement in order to win the round. Player A would say, “14 is greater than 13” to win the round. If the players flip cards of equal value, they must both make a statement such as, “15 is equal to1 5.” Then both players will flip two additional card and find the sum. The player who has the cards of greater value must make a mathematical statement to win the cards from both rounds! Subtraction Players split the deck of cards and simultaneously flip over the top two cards. Each player finds the difference of his/her cards and makes a mathematical statement. For example, if Player A flips a 6 and an 8, he/she would say, “The difference between 8 and 6 is 2.” If Player B flips a 4 and a 9, then he/she would say, “The difference between 9 and 4 is 5.” The player who flips the cards with the greatest difference must make a mathematical statement in order to win the round. Player B would say, “5 is greater than 2” to win the round. If the players flip cards of equal value, they must both make a statement such as, “5 is equal to 5.” Then both players will flip two additional card and find the difference. The player who has the cards of greater value must make a mathematical statement to win the cards from both rounds! Multiplication Players split the deck of cards and simultaneously flip over the top two cards. Each player finds the product of his/her cards and makes a mathematical statement. For example, if Player A flips a 6 and an 8, he/she would say, “When I multiply the factors 6 and 8, the product is 48” If Player B flips a 4 and a 9, then he/she would say, “When I multiply the factors 4 and 9, the

product is 36.” The player who flips the cards with the greatest product must make a mathematical statement in order to win the round. Player A would say, “The product 48 is greater than the product 36” to win the round. If the players flip cards of equal value, they must both make a statement such as, “15 is equal to 15.” Then both players will flip two additional card and find the product. The player who has the cards of greater value must make a mathematical statement to win the cards from both rounds! *This game can be made more challenging by flipping three cards each per round. Multiply a two digit factor by a one digit factor (i.e. 13 x 5) to get a product (45). Division Pick the divisor: Begin the game by deciding what the divisor is going to be. You might begin by playing with a divisor of 2 to practice creating “halves.” Players split the deck of cards and simultaneously flip over the top two cards. Each player finds the quotient of his/her cards and makes a mathematical statement. For example, if Player A flips a 6 and an 8, he/she would say, “When I divide 68 by 2, the quotient is 34.” If Player B flips a 4 and a 9, then he/she would say, “When I divide 49 by 2, the product is 24.5.” The player who flips the cards with the greatest quotient must make a mathematical statement in order to win the round. Player A would say, “The quotient 34 is greater than the quotient 24.5” to win the round. If the players flip cards of equal value, they must both make a statement such as, “5 is equal to 5.” Then both players will flip two additional card and find the quotient. The player who has the cards of greater value must make a mathematical statement to win the cards from both rounds!

“22” (This game can be played in a group or individually. If you have more than 3

players, use two decks of cards.) Begin by laying the cards face up in a 5 x 5 array. Each player will take a turn to create an equation where the answer is 22. Use any combination of operations to create your answer! At the end of each player’s turn, use the additional cards from the deck to refill the array. For example, Player A might create the equation 5 + 8 + 9 = 22 while Player B might create 10 x 2 + 5 – 3 = 22and Player C might create (9 x 9) – (9 x 7) + 4 = 22

Practice using mathematical language as you play the game! Sum – the answer to an addition question Difference- the answer to a subtraction question Product – the answer to a multiplication question Quotient – the answer to a division question
