WHAT’S YOUR PREDICTION?

• Have we aroused your curiosity?• Are you interested to predict or discover the topic of our lesson?• What are your anxieties about learning today?• What emotions have we aroused?• What are we going to learn about today? Make your prediction!!!!• Let’s start learning!!!!

LESSON OBJECTIVES & STRATEGIES • Demographics: 9th grade Biology class at Edwardsville H.S.• Objectives: Students will be able to cite, define, and construct key practical

applications, concepts, examples and summaries for natural selection and the evidence of evolution.

• Lesson Strategies: Defining, discussing, connecting, and simulating to understand key vocabulary terms

• Demonstrate and connect the four conditions of natural selection needed for evolution to occur through a pepper moth simulation-Group collaboration work 3x4 or 4x3 groups

• Assessment: Natural Selection Jeopardy Game will access you post knowledge of Natural Selection & the evidence of Evolution- Groups/Teams of 3x4 or 4x3

VOCABULARY TERMS & ANSWERS

• 1)-Adaption-a change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes suited to its environment-plants, animals, owls, cheetahs, insects, and kangaroos

• 2)-Variation- changes in the DNA sequences—hair color, skin color, blood group, finger prints, and sex

• 3)-Natural Selection-ability to survive & reproduce in a specific environment--The peppered moth used to be a light color with black spots. When the atmosphere in London became filled with soot because of the Industrial Revolution, the white trees became darker and light colored moths were eaten by birds more readily. Within months, moths became darker and lighter moths were rare. After the Industrial Revolution, light colored moths were found in greater numbers( Our simulation activity will discuss this in greater detail) .

VOCABULARY TERMS AND ANSWERS CONT’D

• 4)- Fitness- inherited characteristics that increases chances of survival—an animals' reproductive success

• 5)-Heritable Traits- Many variations in traits are heritable—the traits are passed from parent to offspring through DNA—differences in individuals traits influence their survival & are heritable population will evolve by natural selection. http://www.mnh.si.edu/exhibits/darwin/naturalselection.html

THE PROCESS OF EVOLUTION

Four conditions of natural selection involved in the process of evolution• 1-Overproduction of offspring—more offspring are produced than can survive• 2-Genetic Variation in a population—Difference between organisms• 3. Struggle to Survive—some organisms are better adapted and survive, and

others die• 4. Successful Reproduction—organisms that are better adapted and survive

reproduce and pass their "good" genes on

GROUP COLLABORATION PEPPER MOTH ACTIVITY

The peppered moth used to be a light color with black spots. When the atmosphere in London became filled with soot because of the Industrial Revolution, the white trees became darker and light colored moths were eaten by birds more readily. Within months, moths became darker and lighter moths were rare. After the Industrial Revolution, light colored moths were found in greater numbers.

CONCLUSION CHALLENGE• Challenge Options• Write a one sentence or one paragraph summary of todays lesson, or for

the tech savvy and artistic students create a 1-2 minute video, rap, or graphic collage detailing today’s lesson.

• Email your sentences, summations, artwork, videos, or musical production to [email protected] or [email protected] these items will be uploaded into our class website-

• Create a sematic web or concept map—Natural Selection or the Evidence of Evolution
