Play Ball! The Great American Ball Park, home of the Cincinnati Reds, will be the host of the 2015 Major League All-Star Game. This will be the fifth time the Reds have hosted the MLB All-Star Game. The previous four times were in 1938, 1953, 1970 and 1988. This will be the first time the Midsummer classic has been held at Great American Ball Park.

The MLB All-Star Game is now a six-day event consisting of the

T-Mobile FanFest, All Star Sunday, the Gatorade Workout Day; Red

Carpet show presented by Chevrolet and of the course the game itself

on Tuesday, July 14.

The FanFest will begin on the Thursday prior to the game and hold

court at the Duke Energy Center. Fans will have the opportunity to visit

the largest interactive baseball theme park in the world, meet MLB

legends, participate in training drills and test their batting skills. Artifacts

from Cincinnati Reds history will also be on display.

On All Star Sunday there will be a double header consisting of

the SiriusXM All-Star futures game and celebrity Softball Game. The

Gatorade All-Star Workout Day will feature MLB Players Batting Practice

and the always highly anticipated Home Run Derby.

The big game will begin at 7:30 pm on July 14, following the All-Star

Red Carpet Show presented by Chevrolet. All Stars will parade through

downtown Cincinnati in Chevrolets on their way to Great American Ball

Park, arriving on a literal Red Carpet.

Whether you’re a fan of the American of National League, the MLB

All-Star Game gives us all a chance to see some of the best players in

baseball come together for a celebration of all the game has and will

bring to its fans.

Garrett CelekThe only undrafted rookie to make the 53-man roster of the San Francisco 49ers, he is currently a tight end with the team and was with them in their Super Bowl XLVII appearance in 2013.

Ezzard Charles (1921-1975)Nicknamed “The Cincinnati Cobra” he began his amateur boxing career as a teenager. Charles is the city’s only World Heavyweight Boxing Champion.

• The Roebling Suspension Bridge was the prototype for designer John A Roebling’s Brooklyn Bridge. At the time of its completion in 1867, it was the longest bridge of its kind in the world spanning 1,067 feet.

• Porkopolis, one of Cincinnati’s most infamous nicknames, dates back to the late 1820’s through the mid 1930’s when the city was the main processing center for pork in the U.S.

• Cincinnati was the first city to establish a municipal fire department and fire house. Firefighters have been organized here for over 200 years.

• Five U.S. Presidents have come from Cincinnati: William Howard Taft, Rutherford B. Hayes, Ulysses S. Grant, William Henry Harrison and Benjamin Harrison.

• Cincinnati’s original name was Losantiville, named after the Licking River in Northern Kentucky. The name Losantiville means “opposite of the mouth of the river.”

• The Procter & Gamble Company was founded here in 1837 as a candle and soap making business by William Procter and James Gamble. Cincinnati was an ideal location for them due to the area’s easy access to lye, which was used in both candles and soap. Lye is made from animal fat and wood ashes.

• Gorilla Glue was introduced in 1999 to DIYers and was recently named one of Greater Cincinnati’s top workplaces.

• Graeter’s Ice Cream was founded here in 1870 and still serves French Pot ice cream, handmade treats and a variety of baked goods.

• Samuel Adams is brewed here at the former Hudepohl-Schoenling brewery, in Over The Rhine. It is one of their three brewing facilities in the US.

For nearly 100 years, leading up to Prohibition, beer was a leading export and the breweries themselves were a major employer of Cincinnati. Although Cincinnati had previously been infamous for being the center of pork production in the US, beer eventually took the lead in driving Cincinnati’s economy. By 1890, Cincinnati was the 3rd largest beer producer in the country.

Several German breweries located in Over The Rhine produced this

beer. Over The Rhine is a 360-acre neighborhood located just north of

downtown Cincinnati. This neighborhood was the landing spot for most

immigrants making their way to Cincinnati, including the Germans, who

brought with them a serious work ethic, a strong cultural identity and a

thirst for bier. (traditional German spelling)

At one time Over The Rhine was home to more than 15 breweries. A

few of these elaborate structures still stand today. In fact, some lagering

tunnels and underground storage facilities that ran underground and

connected many buildings and facilities are still being rediscovered

today.

The many saloons that operated during this period were the nerve

center of social life for many of the residents of Over The Rhine. They

were also the target of several temperance movements and caused a

considerable amount of political unrest in the area.

A Cincy Tradition

With the onset of Prohibition in 1919, the many breweries in the re-

gion were shut down. A few were able to reopen in 1933 but changes

in the marketplace made it difficult for them to operate for long. Many

bigger operations such as Anheuser-Busch and Miller had changed the

game.

A few Cincinnati beer names you may rec-

ognize include: Hudepohl, Christian Moerlein,

Burger, Schoenling and Little Kings. Some

beers are even being brewed at updated and

restored facilities in their old neighborhood,

Over The Rhine. In addition to these traditional

breweries, several craft breweries have been

established in various locations throughout the

city.

incinnati is one great community, but each of our neighborhoods has its own unique personality. Whether you enjoy an area with urban nightlife, a river view or a comfortable quiet suburb, Cincinnati’s got it all.

Many of these neighborhood’s ethnic backgrounds are still intact and celebrated with food, various events and activities throughout the year.

You’ll find a very strong German influence throughout the city and that heritage is celebrated in many ways throughout the year. Downtown’s annual Oktoberfest-Zinzinnati is the largest such celebration in the US and the second largest in the world. There are also several events celebrating the local German delicacy: Goetta, a mixture of oats, spices, beef and pork usually eaten for breakfast. This dish was originally designed to stretch meat servings over several meals to conserve money.

Covington and Newport, KY, just across the Ohio River offer many sightseeing activities, highlighting their own unique history and personalities. Just north of downtown, Mt. Adams offers spectacular views of Cincinnati

and the Ohio River in a village with plenty of things to keep you busy for some time.

Hyde Park Square and Montgomery offer numerous upscale boutiques and a special place to spend an afternoon.

The Clifton area features the University of Cincinnati campus, several hospitals, the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens and several dining destinations that are local favorites.

The Kenwood area is home to the largest and most upscale of our area malls along with many exceptional restaurants located nearby. Blue Ash, near the Montgomery and Kenwood areas, offers a wide range of recreational activity in a clean and safe environment.

The Rhine

Believed to be the largest intact urban historic district in the United

States, Over the Rhine, also known as OTR among locals, was added to the

National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It contains the largest collection

of Italianate architecture in the United States, and is an example of an intact

19th-century urban neighborhood. Its architectural significance has been

compared to the French Quarter in New Orleans, the historic districts of

Savannah, Georgia; Charleston, South Carolina, and Greenwich Village in

New York City. This neighborhood was the nerve center of beer brewing

during the late 1800’s.

Today, Over The Rhine is home to a thriving arts community, many

unique boutique shops and exciting restaurants. The historic and

Over This neighborhood’s distinctive name comes from its builders and early residents, German immigrants of the mid-19th century. Many walked to work across bridges over the Miami and Erie Canal, which separated the area from downtown Cincinnati. The canal was nicknamed “the Rhine” in reference to the Rhine River in Germany, and the newly settled area north of the canal as “Over the Rhine.”

Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, is located here, as is the historic

Findlay Market. Washington Park has recently completed a major

renovation and is now one of the premier outdoor destinations in

the city.

OTR hosts the annual Cincinnati May Festival, held at Music Hall,

Bockfest, and the Cincinnati Fringe Festival. The annual Cincinnati

Reds Opening Day Parade begins its journey through downtown

to Great American Ball Park at the Findlay Market.

Located directly across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati in Northern Kentucky, the community of Covington was established in 1814. With a constant influx of industry and inhabitants, Covington was a full-fledged city by the mid-1830’s. “The Point” at the confluence of the Licking and Ohio Rivers, was both the commercial and residential focus of the city for several years, home to various shipping facilities and industry along the rivers, taking full advantage of Covington’s superior river location.

The architecture and culture of this area can be traced back to the

city’s German heritage. One stunning example is the historic Covington-

Cincinnati suspension bridge, built by John A. Roebling between 1856

and 1867.

Covington’s most popular destination for visitors, MainStrasse Village,

is a thriving entertainment district with local restaurants integrated with a

few boutique shops along Main Street. The neighborhood is characterized

by its 6th Street promenade and the Goose Girl Fountain that often hosts

festivals and other entertaining events for both children and adults.

Devou Park offers an array of recreational opportunities including

an 18-hole golf course, multiple playgrounds and picnic shelters, over

eight miles of mountain bike trails, an amphitheater, a fishing lake and a

spectacular view of downtown Cincinnati.

Covington is also home to a variety of attractions and festivals, including

the MainStrasse Village “Original” Goetta Fest, which is held each summer

to celebrate everything about Goetta.

Covington is easily accessible from downtown Cincinnati and

Newport. In fact, downtown Covington is a very short walk across the

Roebling Suspension Bridge from downtown Cincinnati.

Blue Ash Located near the Montgomery and Kenwood neighborhoods, Blue Ash is only 10 minutes from downtown Cincinnati. This area is known for it’s very clean, safe and friendly environment. The daytime population here soars to nearly 55,000 as Blue Ash is home to over 2,000 businesses.

Blue Ash's parks and recreation facilities and programs are

second to none, with major expansions and improvements

planned in the near future. Blue Ash’s special events, featuring

free national-level entertainment, are well known throughout

Mt. Adams Mt. Adams is very popular among locals and visitors. The area is known for it’s charm with narrow, winding streets, spectacular river and city views, a bustling commercial life and interesting examples of architectural styles, including five buildings currently listed on the historic register.

This upscale residential neighborhood is located just east of

downtown and is surrounded by Eden Park. The park is home to

the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Krohn Conservatory, Playhouse

in the Park and the historic Rookwood Pottery facility, which now

operates as a restaurant.

Originally named Mt. Ida, it was rechristened Mt. Adams after

President John Quincy Adams delivered the dedication address

for the then new Cincinnati Observatory in 1843. The Cincinnati

Observatory owned the most powerful telescope of its kind when

it opened.

Mt. Adams is home to an important 150-year-old annual

pilgrimage known as “Praying the Steps” which is a tradition carried

out each year on Good Friday upon the steep, spiraling staircase

leading to the Holy Cross-Immaculata Church. You can climb these

stairs at any time, though, for a breathtaking and spectacular view of

downtown Cincinnati, Newport, Bellevue and Covington, KY. The

view is well worth the effort!

The great variety of performing and visual arts, dining and

entertainment combined with the well kept Victorian homes and

spectacular views make Mt Adams a memorable way to spend the

Situated directly across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati, the city of Newport was settled in 1791 and by 1900 was the third largest city in Kentucky, after Covington and Louisville. Newport and Covington are both considered satellites of Cincinnati.

Newport

Newport once had the reputation of "Sin City" due to its upscale

gambling casinos on Monmouth street, but Monmouth was also home to

many many men's stores, nice restaurants, and ice cream parlors. In the

1980s and 1990s, Newport began developing its riverfront and focusing

on "family friendly" tourism. In May 1999 the $40-million Newport

Aquarium opened and the Newport on the Levee entertainment complex

opened the following year.

Today, Newport is home to a thriving entertainment district, with

attractions such as the world-class aquarium, upscale shopping and dining,

the World Peace Bell and the sightseeing offerings of BB Riverboats and

Stratus Helicopters. For a glimpse of Newport’s storied past, the Gangsters

Dueling Piano Bar is the starting point of the Newport Gangster Tour

which visits many of the local spots previously visited by America’s

most notorious gangsters.

Newport hosts a variety of festivals throughout the year, including

the Queen City Sausage Fest in July, the Great Inland Seafood Festival

in August and the Newport Oktoberfest each September.

You may not notice at first glance, but Cincinnati has a couple of very interesting things in common with ancient Rome. First, the city was settled in an area featuring seven hills, just as Rome was. Second, the name Cincinnati is derived from the very effective and efficient Roman dictator, Cincinnatus.

Quick history lesson - Cincinnatus was a great leader of Ancient Rome. He was a war hero and rose to power but gave it all up when he felt he could do no more good and retired to a farm. This example gave birth to The Society of The Cincinnati after the American Revolution, which preached the words of Cincin-natus, and eventually lent it’s name to the city.

bank and is often referred to as “The City of Seven Hills.” However, there are many more than seven. Trying to get a consistent list of

the “seven” hills proves to be most difficult, even amongst locals. No one can quite agree which ones make up the seven and which ones do not.

Depending on the source, any or all of the following “hills” should be included in the list: Mt. Airy, Mt. Adams, Mt. Echo, Mt. Healthy, Mt. Lookout, Mt. Storm, Mt. Washington, Walnut Hills, Price Hill (sometimes referred to as Mt. Harrison), Fairview Heights, Vine Street Hill, Fairmount and Mt. Hope.

There are several examples of art throughout the city that give a nod to the Roman connection. On Central Parkway (near Vine) is a mural of a Roman Colosseum with a statue of Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, the city’s namesake, at it’s base. This mural is the definition of epic, and you’ll find yourself wanting to step in for a photo...hard to do in a painting!

However, you can, pose with Lucies “Lucky” Quinctus Pigasus from “The Big Pig Gig.” You will find him at Sawyer Park near the other, more formal statue at Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus.

In 1896, C. Edward Richter and three brothers named Phillips opened the store known as The Richter & Phillips Company. They offered many different items to their customers with jewelry at the top of the list. They also offered their customers nationwide catalog shopping for various items including jewelry, giftware, luggage, purses, trophies, plaques, clocks, electrical appliances, sporting goods, musical instruments, dolls and toys.

Affected by the Great Depression of the 1930’s, Richter & Phillips

filed bankruptcy and the store was purchased by Frederick Fehr, a

travelling diamond salesman. Mr. Fehr eventually bought out all remaining

stockhlders of Richter & Phillips and it became a family owned business.

In 1946 Fred’s son, Fred Jr. began working at the store and still does to

this day! For the next few decades the store featured four watchmakers

on staff who could repair any watch. The store also had their own watch

brand, trademarked “Luzerne Watches.”

In 1982, Fred Jr’s son, Frederick Fehr III (Rick) joined the business and

took over all diamond and gemstone purchasing and sales. Arthur Fehr

(Art) joined the staff after becoming a Graduate Gemologist in the early

1990’s.

Today at The Richter & Phillips Company, you can find Rick and Art

Fehr busy at their desks or assisting customers in the storeroom and Fred

Fehr Jr. plugging away at the mounds of paperwork in his office a few days

a week.

Rookwood Pottery

Rookwood Pottery is one of Cincinnati’s oldest companies and has contributed significantly to the city’s history and personality. World renowned for impeccable design and craftsmanship, Rookwood’s products have been installed in some of the country’s most celebrated buildings including: Carew Tower and Union Terminal in Cincinnati,

Chicago’s Monroe Building, The Seelbach Hotel in Louisville, Grand Central Terminal as well as several subway stops in New York City.

Rookwood Pottery was founded by Cincinnatian Maria Longworth

Nichols and was the very first manufacturing company in the US founded

by a woman. After being inspired by the Centennial Exhibition in

Philadelphia in 1876, Maria asked her father, real estate baron and arts

patron Joseph Longworth, to fund her pottery venture. She named it

Rookwood after the Longworth family estate.

Maria hired a team of famous artists, talented art students and glaze

technicians, encouraging them to exchange ideas. Most importantly,

she encouraged her employees to be creative, to try new subjects, new

techniques and new mediums. Whatever inspired them to create fine art.

Rookwood Pottery quickly became a popular American art pottery,

designed to be at least as decorative as it is useful. Many Rookwood

pieces from this era can capture high prices at auction.

Today the company continues to use the same processes and recipes

that were originated in 1880. The Rookwood process is a synergy of

chemistry and art. Its glaze chemists and artists work closely together

to produce works of art that are as innovative as they are creative.

Rookwood’s proprietary clay and glaze formulas use the finest materials

available and are designed with the unique needs of its artists in mind.

From the first inspiration to the final product, the Rookwood process

centers on the artistic expertise of its craftsmen, artists and chemists.

The company continues to innovate from their Over-the-Rhine

Hyde ParkHyde Park has long been a magnate community

The center of “The Square” (Erie Avenue between Edwards and Michigan) is defined by an island park in the middle of Erie Boulevard featuring lawns and landscaped areas as well as historic Kilgore Fountain. Hyde Park Square also features many events that never cease to delight including the 49th annual Hyde Park Art Show which takes place Sunday October 4th from 10am to 5 pm. This is the largest juried show in the Midwest which features over 200 artists

from around the area and across the country. The Hyde Park Square Farmers’ Markets take place every Sunday/May 17 through October 25 from 9:30am to 1:30pm –on Erie Avenue between Edwards Road & Michigan Avenue. The Hyde Park Farm-ers Market features locally grown produce, prepared delectables, live music and more. The annual Hyde Park BLAST features children’s and adult running races, intermediate and national-ly-ranked cycling races and a spectacular street party with live mu-sic takes place Saturday June 27th from 8am to midnight. The annual Hyde Park Square Sidewalk Sale is August 15 from 11am-5pm where bargains can be had on uniquely wonderful merchandise. The annual Hyde Park Holiday Happening event with music, store sales, Santa arriving via Fire Engine, carolers, holiday card photo booth and more takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 28th, from 10am-7pm.

Though many consider Hyde Park to be one of the most desirable, prestigious and safe neighborhoods to live in the city, it’s worth noting that there is a true diversity in Hyde Park housing ranging from multi-million-dollar river-view estates to mid-range family homes to starter homes as well as a wide variety of home and apartment rental opportunities. Homes in this area date from the late 1800’s to in-fill new homes. Most are circa early 20th cen-tury. A popular local breakfast meat, Goetta can be traced back to the large number of German immi-grants who settled in the Cincinnati area. Typically a mixture of pork, beef, Steelcut oats and

spices, Goetta is traditionally prepared much like a sausage patty and is often served with eggs and toast.

Goetta has a rich, savory scent and is available in either spicy or traditional varieties. It can be cut into virtually any thickness or shape and its meaty flavor is complemented by the whole grain flavor of the oats. When perfectly prepared, Goetta is crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Dip in ketchup or dunk it in Maple syrup. Any way you like it, Goetta is one of the culinary contributions that Cincinnati can call its own.

Although Goetta’s exact history is somewhat debated, evidence points to its creation in the late 1800’s by German immigrants living in Cincinnati. However, some dispute this version of history and claim it was actually first made across the river from Cincinnati in Covington, Kentucky. Here, a family restaurant reportedly sold a combination of oatmeal and meat known as Irish Mush, but over time the product was reportedly copied and taken across the river, where it received the German moniker, Goetta. The controversy continues.

Many Cincinnati restaurants serve this as a local breakfast staple, burgers and even as a pizza topping! Look for Goetta burgers at many festivals and events throughout Cincinnati. You can also purchase it in the grocery store or online.

This legendary hotbed of funk and country music was located at

1540 Brewster Avenue, just north of downtown, in a former ice storage

building. Owner Syd Nathan started King Records to fill the country

music niche that was currently being ignored by the larger record labels

of the time, in 1943. Soon after, King Records began recording and

releasing R&B songs from many black artists, also being ignored by the

major labels.

King was essentially a one stop shop for making records. An artist

could record the song, make the masters, press the records and even

ship them out all in the same day. These records were usually pressed in

small numbers making many of them rarities and collectors items.

The roster at King included some of the most influential artists of

all time. While there are way too many to list we’ll give you a few high-

lights. The roster of Country artists who recorded for King included

Reno & Smiley, David Allen Coe, Wayne Cochran, Minnie Pearl, Ralph

Willis and the Stanley Brothers.

Blues artists included Freddie King, Blind Blake, Earl Hooker and

Johnny “Guitar” Watson. King also dabbled in jazz with recordings by

Earl Bostic and Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson, but the music that really

put King over the top was their R&B. Little Willie John, Roy Brown, Joe

Tex and Hank Ballard & the Midnighters were all very popular, but it

was James Brown who consistently topped the charts and kept things

moving at King. James Brown spent a significant amount of time in the

Cincinnati area while recording for King.

In 2008, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame & Museum placed a histor-

ical marker at the King Records site. The building is still standing as is

the Manse Hotel building nearby, which is where many famous black

entertainers stayed while it was in operation, including James Brown

and the roster of King recording artists.

The Wheat Ridge Amish Community is located just 50 miles east of Cincinnati and offers an opportunity to experience a lifestyle many of us wish we might have. Things move much slower here and the residents can be described as loving, patient, hard working, honest and Godly.

This community was stated in 1976 when seven families moved from

Milroy, Indiana to Adams County, OH. Now there are approximately

100 families, four churches and four schools all within twelve mile up

and down Wheat Ridge Rd. in West Union and Seaman, OH.

The Amish, known for their horse and buggies and solid crafts-

manship, have built an amazing number of successful businesses in this

enclave. On Saturdays in the Spring and Summer, you’ll find hundreds

of people perusing the various shops.

There are several unique events and parks to be experienced too.

Every Fall they host the Wheat Ridge Olde Thyme Herb Fair & Harvest

Celebration and in March the Amish Bird Symposium happens. The 67-

acre Chaparral Prairie State Nature Preserve offers the opportunity for a

leisurely hike amongst wildflowers and butterflies. Buzzard Ridge Rock is

also a very popular hiking destination.

Spend a night at the fabulous Murphin Ridge Inn. Enjoy their private

cabins, get a massage, take a hike in the woods, sit by the swimming

pool, enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in their rustic log cabin restau-

rant, sit by the fire pit that is lit every night.

You could then take a one mile drive over to Miller's Furniture,

Bakery & Bulk Food Stores and check out over 2 acres of furniture under

one roof. There you’ll also be able to enjoy the BEST glazed doughnuts

made fresh daily as you walk through the bulk food store that features

Take a break from the pace of the big city and plan to make a week-

One Last Look... ;) The landmark fountain located in downtown’s Fountain Square is commonly known as the Tyler Davidson Fountain but is sometimes referred to as the “Genius of Water.”

Cincinnati businessman Henry Probasco dedicated

the famous fountain “To the People of Cincinnati” in

memory of his business partner and brother-in-law, Tyler

Davidson, on October 6, 1871. It is regarded as the city’s

unofficial symbol.

The statue was designed to rival the great fountains

of Europe and its water motif is a nod to the city’s historic

relationship with the Ohio River. The four figures around

the base were originally designed as drinking fountains

and can still be drunk from today.

Every year the fountain is turned on the Saturday

before Major League Baseball’s Opening Day in honor of

the Cincinnati Reds being the first organized professional

team. The fountain is closed in the fall as temperatures

decline to below freezing.

The fountain is remembered by many non-

Cincinnatians as it was seen as a part of the opening credits

for the famous television series “WKRP in Cincinnati.”
