1.1 The Principles of the Citrix Access Solution
This describes the principles of the Citrix access solution.
Citrix Principles
1. Citrix Principles
Various applications are installed and published on a Citrix server or a server farm
consisting of multiple Citrix servers. The Citrix client uses the independent computing
architecture (ICA) software to communicate with the Citrix server or the server farm. All
the applications are executed on the Citrix server, and all the execution results can be
displayed on a local Citrix client.
As a result, through various networking modes such as WAN, LAN, and Internet, you can
effectively access the applications and data on the Citrix server.
Figure 1-1 Schematic diagram of the Citrix
As shown in Figure 1-1, all applications are installed and executed on the Citrix server orthe server farm, and operation results are displayed on the Citrix client. The networks
between the Citrix server and the Citrix client only transmit the information processed by
the ICA installed on the Citrix client. The transmitted information includes screen
refreshing, keystroke, and mouse movement.
2. Citrix Farm principles
The Citrix supports a server farm consisting of multiple Citrix servers. Figure 1-2 shows
the schematic diagram of a Citrix server farm.

Table 1-1 Advantages of the Citrix networking
Advantage Description
Optimizing the
configuration ofhardware resources
The Citrix client access solution helps you to assign hardware resources
properly. The Citrix client is used only to display system output, and thus a simple
PC configuration is applicable without the following hardware: hard
drive, floppy disk drive, and CD-ROM drive.
Various applications run on the Citrix server. Therefore, you must
assign more hardware resources to the Citrix server to improve system
performance.
Simplifying client
upgrade and
maintenance
The application client software is installed and executed on the Citrix
server. Therefore, you can upgrade the application client only on the
Citrix server. The upgrade greatly reduces the maintenance efforts of
system administrators. In the network management center, system
administrators can quickly perform the following operations on the
applications of each Citrix server: distribution, management,
configuration, upgrade, and technical support.
Enabling the access
through the web
interface
The Citrix client access solution enables you to access the application
through the web interface. On the web interface, the application client
software is embedded or published on an HTML page.
Securing the access
to the server
To ensure the information security for the login to the server, the Citrix
provides the Secure Access Manager software to perform the Secure
Socket Layer (SSL) encryption on the following items: the user
account, password, server IP address, and port number.
You can optimize system resource configuration through the Citrix access solution.
l You need not install the application client on the Citrix client. You only need to install a
Citrix client software of about 6MB in size. The Citrix client invokes the application client
on the Citrix server through the ICA session between the Citrix client and server.
l When the application client is running, it occupies many system resources, and a single
Citrix server allows only limited concurrent accesses. For example, the Citrix server
adopting the HP DL380G5 type can support only a maximum of 20 concurrent accesses.
Therefore, you must install application clients on all the Citrix servers in a server farm.
Through the automatic load balancing mechanism, the access capability of concurrent
clients is enhanced. Thus, more concurrent accesses are permissible.
Networking for the Access of the Application Client to the Citrix Server (SingleServer)
Figure 1-3 shows the logical topology of the Citrix when the application client is accessed to
the Citrix server (single server).

Networking for the Access of the Application Client to Citrix Servers (Farm)
The application client software is installed on the Citrix servers. Multiple Citrix clients
communicate with the application server through the application clients on the Citrix servers.
Multiple Citrix servers form a server farm to jointly provide services and balance load.
Figure 1-5 shows the logical network topology of connecting the application client to the Citrix
servers (server farm).
