  • WHEN The Milestone first opened in 2006, there were manya folk who perhaps scratched their heads in disbelief. Whatwere they doing opening a gastro pub, let alone one in the redlight district? Hats off to Matt Bigland and co, then, who wereclearly bestowed with the kind of foresight that many of uswish we possessed.

Work began in the former industrial area in the 1990s.Cornish Place was the flagship development with further plansfor more bars, restaurants, apartments and commercial space. Its been a slow process and its only in the last few years thatthings have really taken flight; Kelham Island is finally livingup to its early promise.

Apartments have shot up intheir hundreds, there are moreplaces to eat (The Grind, Craft& Dough, Urban ) and drink(The Fat Cat, Kelham IslandTavern, Shakespeare) and dobusiness (The ChimneyHouse). And things are aboutto cranked up another notchor two.

    Krynkl will be a

revolutionary new space made entirely of shipping containers.Designed by architects CODA and managed by Fernie Greaves, work on the mixed-use development commences in January2016 with work completed by, wait for it, March 2016. Thefirst of the 24 containers have already starting winging theirway to the Shalesmoor site, the first of its kind in the city, andfeedback has already been off the scale.

The Milestone have already committed to taking the groundfloor space as well as the roof terrace and are already planningtwo new exciting ventures. The huge pull of the project wasto do something different for Sheffield, explains Matt Bigland.

We have been to containerbars and event spaces inLondon and the opportunityto have something like this inKelham Island is amazing.

Kynkl brings a funkyiconic building to Sheffield. Itallows everyone to have a playand take a leap of faith andpush some boundaries in whatpeople expect a buildingsusage to be.

The roof garden on top is obviouslysomething special. We plan to have a bar withwood-burning fires and events happeningthroughout the calendar. It is unique forSheffield and we cant think of another placewhich has such a huge space on top of thebuilding with views across the city.

While a bar may dominate the top of thefour-storey building, Matt has somethingdifferent in mind for the ground floor, something that will complement the schemeperfectly. On the ground floor we have plansfor a great coffee experience. We love thecoffee shop vibe you get in big cosmopolitancities and feel this will work well in anexperience like Krynkl where everyone isfocused on building businesses.

Other confirmed tenants include TRIB3, aboutique gym experience, Paul Hood of Fellas

is opening a vintage barber shop and theyllalso be a photography studio. The units willbe available from 150 sq ft upwards withstandard rents on simple lease terms.

To give new businesses a helping hand,Matt has joined forces with the likes of TimBottrill at Fernie Greaves, David Cross atCODA and entrepreneur Jill White to launcha new start-up initiative specifically forKrynkl. When launched in the new year, thepanel will give new businesses theopportunity to pitch their ideas, in return, they could win a years free rent within thecontainer complex.

We are looking for people who can bringsomething to Krynkl that is unique and addsto the collective, explains Matt. I find this ahugely passionate area as we went through somuch to get The Milestone off the ground. This is a great project to help otherbusinesses.

    Well be waiting with anticipation.

The development at Little Kelham is slowlytaking shape and attracting nationalrecognition for its low-carbon credentials.

LITTLE Kelham is making a big impact in Sheffield, and beyond. The project, which incorporates 157 low-carbon digitally-enabled houses, public areas and space

for retail and leisure, is quite unlike anything else in the city and stands alone on a national level, too.

The development, by Leeds-based Citu, is being created in the Kelham Island quarter ofSheffield an intriguing area which for decades was home to heavy industry but subsequentlyslipped into decline as the steel industry contracted. In recent years though, green shoots havebegun to spring up in the area the biggest of which is Little Kelham, which proudly sits acrossthe sites of two former factories Eagle Works and Green Lane Works. Much of the beautifulVictorian architecture from the original factories remains, and will be lovingly renovated andrestored to serve a variety of purposes for businesses and community alike.

But perhaps the most engaging aspect of Little Kelham is the homes themselves, which are asfar from a conventional new build as its possible to get.

The Citu House has sustainability and minimising waste at its heart these core considerationsare literally ingrained in the homes from the foundations up, from the very first piece of timberframework, to the way residents live, work and play in the finished property.

Built with sustainable materials, from trusted suppliers, the homes, which range in size fromone-to-four bedrooms, are super-insulated and practically airtight. Most of the heat for the houseis generated by what is already in there appliances such as TVs, showers, kettles and toasters,

pets and the residents themselves. The level of insulation in the walls, around thedoors and in the triple-glazed windows, means that hardly any heat generated in thehouse escapes. Fresh, clean, filtered air circulates through the house via a state-of-the-art ventilation system and on a warm summers day, the homes have their ownoutdoor spaces to catch some sun.

Residents are able to control and monitor energy use in their home from asmartphone or tablet. The digital platform allows users to set the temperature andremotely boost heat and turn appliances on and off. The program builds a history ofusers preferences to heat the house to just the right temperature at the right time.

Little Kelham is an embodiment of developer Citus core value that of sustainabilityand the fight against climate change. The company has always believed that there is a better, more sustainable way for companies to build homes and for people to live in them.

Aisling Ramshaw, marketing director at Citu, said: For us, minimising waste just makes senseand that shapes everything we do.

For example, why use an unreliable, expensive, fossilfuel like gas in our homes when we could just buildsmarter houses which use less energy and can takeadvantage of technology like solar PV.

Climate change is something that nobody can ignore, every industry and individual has a part to play and wethink the Citu House and Little Kelham is a small step inchanging peoples mindset.

The next phase of Little Kelham homes will go on salein the New Year. Visit www.littlekelham.com for moredetails.

ONE of the things I love most about food is thesharing element. Theres nothing nicer than sittingdown with friends and family to enjoy a good meal. Ofcourse sharing a meal isnt just about passing the gravy,or having someone appreciate your efforts to get theperfect spuds. Its about catching up, sharing stories, ideas and being with the ones you love. Sadly, were allso busy that we just dont get the chance to do this asmuch as wed like and I dont know about you, but thismeans I treasure every family meal that little bit more.

At Mr Pickles, sharing food goes beyond the dinnertable each and every member of my team loves nothingmore than a good old foodie natter. So, every month Ill behere sharing some of these food stories with you. From toptips and seasonal recipes to foodie anecdotes, Im lookingforward to chatting food with you all. Itd be great if youcould join in the conversation at @mrpicklesfood too.

Talking about sharing, were fast approaching thebiggest sharing season of all Christmas! A time forgifts, seasons greetings, mince pies and silly officeparties. But the highlight has got to be sitting down toChristmas dinner with the family the meal of the yearand the one time that everyone pulls out all the stops.

Which is why Im going for goose this year. Thanks toour high welfare suppliers, I know well have someincredible birds in store. Theres duck and turkey too, butmy top pick has to be goose. It evokes images of a perfectDickens Christmas and its a super rich and deliciousmeat I just know my family are going to love it.

Ill be making the most of the whole bird by usingthe giblets to make the gravy and I think Ill serve itwith a tart apple sauce to cut through the fat andrichness a little.

If youre not sure what to cook this year, why not popinto Mr Pickles for some help with recipe ideas? Weretaking Christmas meat orders up until 7 December andwe have all the trimmings you could ever wish for. Butwhatever you choose for your Christmas dinner this year,we hope you get to share it with the people you love!

SIREN CARIBBEAN CHOCOLATECAKE7.4% Bottle 330mlSiren (based in Berkshire) are atthe forefront of modern UKbrewing and the recent return oftheir outrageous collaboration withCigar City Brewery (Florida) has beenhighly acclaimed. This is a dense, rich and luxuriousstout. Hand-roasted cacao nibs from the USA give hintsof tamarind and soft lemon. The malt provides coffeeand roast notes in abundance, while the experimentalOCC hop variety offers orange, chocolate and coconutflavours. Ageing on Cypress Wood is the icing on thecake. Pure bottled indulgence. It is absolutely beautifuland very popular with the drinkers of Sheffield!

BRADFIELD FARMERS BELGIANBLUE 4.9% Bottle 500ml & mini-keg5 LitresThis really is a Sheffield favouriteand following its launch in earlyNovember the whole city goes madfor its local Christmas beer. This uniquebrew has Christmas berry overtones, a plumy purplecolour and a following so loyal that we sell bottle afterbottle after bottle!

MAGIC ROCK CANNONBALL 7.4% Can 330mlThe unofficial kings of Yorkshirecraft brewing, the much-anticipated recent release of newfresh cans has catapulted MagicRock to another level. Cannonball isan India Pale Ale in the true tradition, high in alcohol and massively hopped. A beer to drink asfresh as possible, tropically fruity, resinous hops competeagainst a sweet malty backbone, while a raspingbitterness builds to a mouth puckering finish. A real hopbomb and now widely available in the distinctive andsuperbly designed new cans.

Sean Clarke, from Beer CentralLtd, has some heartyrecommendations for the partyseason. Raise a glass!

WELCOME to the second edition of The Whisky Files. This month,I have picked three whiskies made at the same distillery, but threedifferent styles of single malt scotch. The three malts featured inthis article are all distilled at the oldest family-owned andindependent distillery in Scotland, Springbank, founded in 1828.

HAZELBURN 12 YEAR OLD. 46% ABVHazelburn is most readily available as a ten year old, butthe 12 year old was actually released first and is finishedin sherry casks for added complexity, accentuated by thelight nature of the spirit. • BRITISH demand for Japanese food has soared in recent years.According to research from market analysts Kantar Worldpanel,in the past year Brits ate anextra 12 million tonnes of riceand noodles 12 milliontonnes. Guess how many rollsof sushi and bowls of soupthat makes?

Well, while we dont havethe answer to that, we do havethe answer to great Japanese food right here in Sheffield: SushiExpress.

Run by Dading Zhen and Jinan Li, the pair have dedicated thelast few years to creating fresh, healthy and delicious Japanesefood, something which has proved popular with both locals andstudents. We consider many of our customers as friends,Dading says. We know many of the overseas and local studentswell and this helps us to find out exactly what they want and tolearn what is popular so we can develop our menu.

Their chef has six years experience in Japanese cuisine andis passionate about creating exciting, tasty dishes by combiningtraditional methods with a modern approach

While many of us have at least dabbled in a taste ofsushi, Japanese cuisine offers such a great variety that forbeginners, browsing a menu full of unknown dishes can bequite overwhelming. For those in search of a little guidance, here are a few of Sushi Expresss favourites and top tips.

BENTOA traditional bento consists of rice, fish or meat, and one or morepickled or cooked vegetables.

SASHIMISashimi is raw fish, or shellfish, usuallyserved with wasabi and soy sauce. Tofully enjoy the flavour, put the wasabi on the fish and then dip inthe soy sauce (rather than being mixed into the soy sauce), as theflavour of the soy sauce overpowers the fragrance of the wasabi.

SUSHIThere are several forms which sushi takes, two main styles arenigiri-sushi and maki-sushi.

Nigiri-sushi is a finger of rice moulded in the hand withtoppings such as a small fillet of fish or tamago-yaki (omeletteflavoured with dashi stock).

Maki-sushi is sushi rice and other ingredients rolled up innori seaweed.

A thin roll (hoso-maki) has a single ingredient and is cutinto six pieces and a thick roll (futo-maki) has a mixture ofingredients and is cut into four pieces.

DONBURIDonburi is a style of Japanese cuisine that features savourydishes served over white rice and includes over 60 recipes thatcover a wide range of flavours consisting of fish, meat andvegetables. Donburi meals are served in oversized rice bowlsand are usually enjoyed with a bowl of miso soup.

RAMENRamen is a Japanese noodle soup dish. Nearly every region inJapan has its own variation of ramen, from the tonkotsu (porkbone broth) ramen of Kyushu to the miso ramen of Hokkaido.

  • THE last few years have beenquite spectacular for beer andbeer lovers. The deliciousgolden-brown liquid has beenrejuvenated, with smallbreweries across the countryreinventing what we onceknew as the beer industry.

One such brewery, WelbeckAbbey Brewery, is located onone of Englands finestcountry estates, WelbeckAbbey. Established by headbrewer Claire Monk in 2011,the brewery enjoyedincreasing success year-on-year and so she decided thetime was right to expand theiroffering and open up amicrobar.

Portland House launched atthe end of October on theformer site of CooplandsBakery on Ecclesall Road. Thevenue seats just 40 people, butmanager Tom Purcell says itwas exactly what they werelooking for. The brewerywanted somewhere thatwould fit in with their brandand theres a really greatatmosphere here. They werelooking for somewhere quiteintimate and this is the perfectsize.

Having worked in Sheffieldpubs for 12 years, Tomsrelationships with localbusinesses have proved

invaluable in sourcing unusualand local produce for the bar including pork pies fromWaterall in the Moor Marketand wines from Le Bon Vin inAttercliffe.

Of course, as a brewery-owned pub, its no surprisebeer is in abundance. Thereare always at least twoWelbeck beers on draught at the moment Henrietta andRed Feather and for thefestive season, Coco Noel andSanta Baby IPA are available. There are also guest beers onoffer from various otherbreweries, as well as a rotatingguest keg and an ever-changing selection of bottledbeers, including a range ofAmerican, British andBelgium beers.

A lot of trendy beersfeature big flavours at themoment, with craft keg beersbeing really popular, Tomsays, who likes to keep afinger on the pulse of whatsnew in the drinks industry. We like to be selective inwhat products we offer, butthere is a fantastic variety. Ifyou think you dont like beer, chances are you just haventfound the right one yet, andPortland House is the idealplace to discover somethingnew.

If beer really isnt your cupof tea then fear not, becauseTom puts just as much effortinto tasting and handpickinghigh-quality wines and spirits.Their spirits are sourced fromjust down the road, fromStarmore Boss on SharrowVale, where owners Jeff andBarry work hard to findintriguing and unusual spirits. At Portland House you caneven enjoy the official worldsbest gin and tonic: Napue ginaccompanied by Fever Treetonic.

While the extraordinaryrange of drinks is enoughreason to visit PortlandHouse, its also ideal if yourein search of somewhere torelax and enjoy a coffee/teaand cake, including the

renowned Tipple Tails fruitcakes. Olives and cheeses arealso available for those with aless sweet tooth.

With a stack of boardgames in the corner, relaxedmusic and a friendlyatmosphere theres no betterplace to catch up with friends, discover new tastes or whileaway an afternoon. Pop intoday to see whats on offerand receive a warm welcomefrom Tom and his team.

  • THE Zing Vaa spans thegenerations. As the firstChinese restaurant in the city,no doubt your parents andmaybe even yourgrandparents have visited atone time or another in thesix decades its been open.

Despite the longevity ofservice, and the loyal clientelewho keep returning, the ZingVaa continues to evolve andhas made recent changes toits menu to ensure it remainsat the forefront of Chinesecuisine in the city. Indeed, therestaurant has a lot morecompetition than when itfirst opened in 1950.

Dim Sum, a dishtraditionally eaten on aSunday, takes a more

prominent place on the menuin-keeping with its increasedpopularity. Make sure you trythe hark au (king prawndumplings), Chao Zhoudumplings and, for theparticularly adventurous, steamed chicken feet in blackbean sauce.

The restaurant alsospecialises in Szechuancuisine, the bold, spicy foodstyle from the Szechuanprovince of South West China.Theres a good selection ofdishes to try, although themenu warns this cuisine isnot for the faint-hearted but if you like spicy foodyoull love it. Stand-out dishesinclude beef slices poached inhot chilli oil, dressed with the

famous Szechuan peppercorn, poached fish with pickledsalted cabbage in a magicwok, and twice-cooked porkbelly with chilli and pepper.

If youre more of a sweetand sour kind of person, many of the recognisabledishes are still available, including a good selection ofvegetarian options. Take abreak from the norm though

    andyoull be

    surprised at whatsavailable.

    DECEMBER 2015 / ISSUE 25

WHATEVER you do, dontbreak your hip. My fail videoaddict boyfriend has seen morethan a few hilarioushoverboard-related scrapes so Isuppose I shouldnt haveexpected anything less thanfair warning as I headed toEcclesall Road to try out whatis pitted to be this yearsnumber one Christmas present. But he neednt have worried.

Within minutes of my firstwobbly go on a Swegway atfirst clinging for dear life tothe business co-owner CarlosForbes as he patiently guidedme around the shop Id gotthe hang of it and began to seewhat all the fuss was about.

It was the sight of singerChris Brown gliding throughCannes on one of the electricself-balancing boards that firstcaught the attention of Carlosand his girlfriend and businesspartner Laura Hodgkinson, who set up Swegway inSeptember.

The Ecclesall Road shop was openedon 9 October and, to put it mildly, business is booming. Theyre averagingaround 200 sales a week and, while 95per cent of those are made online, theshop has been a massive hit and hasattracted customers from as far as Leeds,Hull, Manchester, Newcastle and evenOxford.

We tried to buy a Swegway thissummer but there was nowhere in the UK selling them, saidLaura. We saw a gap in the market, decided to go for it, andare now the only UK shop to sell genuine Swegways. I thinkpart of our success is because people like being able to trythem out before they commit to buying one, they likeknowing that theyre buying a genuine product that has a 12-month warranty, and they like speaking to us face-to-face.

The new business venture is a departure from the couplesprevious job roles. After graduating with a chemistry and

maths degree from theUniversity of Leeds, Lauraspent the following eight yearsworking in marketing inLondon before moving backto her native Sheffield lastyear, where she met formerconstruction worker Carlos.Theyre incredibly proud tohave an entirely Sheffield-based business even thewarehouse is in the city, onBramall Lane and theyemploy eight local staff.

With prices ranging from299 for a toddler version to549 for a Bluetooth-enabledrapid charge model andmany more varieties inbetween Swegways are notthe cheapest gadgets, buttheyre definitely one of themost fun. You can whizaround at up to ten miles anhour (trust me, it feels a hellof a lot faster) and its not justkids snapping them up; a 70-year-old customer recentlybought one and loved it.

Laura and Carlos sights are firmly seton expanding the business further. Theboards are always evolving and werereally keen to explore other eco-friendly,futuristic transportation or gadgets, such aselectric bikes and drones, said Laura. Butfor now, were just pleased to be servingthe queues of people travelling from milesaround to check out our Swegways.

IT is generally acknowledged that buying for the men is achallenge. One which usually results in the usual standard issue socks, tie set, supermarket bought shaving foam set or thatold chestnut pyjamas.

Women are adept at dropping big hints but if men needsomething, they normally just go out and buy it, leaving a giftidea wasteland in their wake. But buying men a gift shouldntbe an obligation. It should be fun, with the gift tailored to theindividual resulting in the satisfaction of knowing that youvegot it right come Christmas Day.

Here at Savills were increasingly known as a one-stop manshop and at Christmastime we come into our own with ourDevonshire Street shop being a must go to mecca for wives andgirlfriends, not to mention those guys in the know who want toshare the Savills experience with their brothers and dads. Ourretail emporium is a veritable Aladdins cave of cool and unusualideas, many of which are now available online. Weve used theknowledge that we have built up over the years to compile a topfive list of dos and donts and sure-fire gift winners.

Every Christmas the usualconundrum faces most people. What to buy the fella in your life?

Finally, always remember, in the wise words of thatawesome orator and epitome of the Savills stylishattitude, Winston Churchill: We make a living bywhat we get, but we make a life by what we give.

DONT give the standard issue presents. Step out of yourcomfort zone and dont just please them delight them!

    (See tips 2-5).

DO go for quality classics.Cashmere. 100 per cent wool.

Leather, men love leather, period.Buy a good quality leather wallet, key fob, tool roll, belt or messengerbag. All our leather goods arehandmade, vegetable-dyedbeauties. Good British brands are always a winner too. Think Dr.Martens, Fred Perry, John Smedley its hard to get it wrong withthese brands. DONT do novelty. Bart Simpson Christmas socks arenever a good look. Ever.

Christmas is all about down time.

DO buy him an experience. Savills gift cards are the perfectway to treat him to the Hot Towel Wet Shave experience,

  • IT sort of jumps out at you from behind here in Britain, oneday you are cycling in the sun to and from work then aweekend goes by and all of a sudden the dark has somehowextended itself into your daily commute.

A lot of people give up on their bike when this happens, cant blame you, its like having the pub close early or thecarnival ride stop prematurely. That said, keeping yourself onthe bike over the dark winter months can be of great benefitand is surprisingly easy with the right kit. Its not aboutflogging yourself against the harshest of weather conditionsbattling 50mph winds to climb up Rutland Road, its abouttaking the opportunities when they arise.

Dont be scared of the cold. Layer up and get some thickgloves, once you start riding youll not even notice its onlytwo degrees out there.

Lights are your best friend at this time of year and having asmany as you can fit on your bike is good. A high powered lightto show you all the potholes and keep you away from the kerbedge is a must. At the rear you should resemble the Christmastree youll be putting up soon. The extra weight isnt going to

damage your record Strava time especially over the two-milecommute so dont worry too much about that.

If you keep on your bike over winter youll reap the rewards.Remember how you felt in April when you got back on yourbike after your last hiatus? Well that feeling just keeps going allthrough winter and if you are hard enough or mad enough youcould try riding in the snow (yes thats me).Russell Cutts, Russells Bike Shed

First StepsCo-owner Adrian Bagnoli first got into Latin music whilst visiting a popular Braziliannightclub called the Maracan in Florence, Italy. Adrian was amazed by the livelyatmosphere and was convinced that this was exactly the kind of night out Sheffieldneeded.

Back then, the only type of dancing youd find couples doing would be the slow, smoochy style at the end of the night, in a cheesy nightclub, explains Adrian. The onlyLatin music people knew was The Gipsy Kings and La Bamba. We decided the time wasripe to introduce a bit more culture to Sheffield.

Adrian and friends Toni Dente and Gian Bohan started by launching a Viva Salsa nightat local nightclub Club Uropa (formerly Isabellas), booking Brazilian DJ Marcus Viniciusand a live Brazilian band called Viramundo for the opening night.

An astounding 700 people attended the first event in June 1996, making Sheffields firstsalsa club night an undeniable success.

This really paved the way for us, says Adrian. Calendar News came to cover it and theatmosphere wasincredible. It gave us lotsof confidence and westarted booking touringbands from Cuba andLatin-American bandsbased in London andManchester.

The final Viva Salsatook place in May 2000and it was then thatAdrian joined forceswith Brad Charlesworthand Kito Morales toopen Cubana onTrippet Lane.

IT was 15 years ago that Cubanaburst onto the Sheffield nightlifescene, offering a burst ofjoyousHavana sunshine on asleepy back street a shortshimmy away from the citycentre.

Looking at all the multiculturalrestaurants, bars and musicvenues in Sheffield, it is easy totake the wide variety of food, drink and sounds from aroundthe world for granted.

But it hasnt always been sucha hotbed of diversity, andCubana was one of thetrailblazers that helped breathenew life into Sheffield. Now thesalsa venue is celebrating alandmark anniversary and it isas fresh and vibrant as ever.

First unleashed on anunsuspecting public in November2000, Latin music, salsa dancing, spicy tapas food and colourfulcocktails all blended, bringingpeople together in a fun andfriendly setting.

Now based in Leopold Square, the Latin beat pulses strongerthan ever.

After blazing a Latin trail in the early noughties, Cubana is nowfirmly established as one of the top party venues in the city.

Cubana Mk. I Trippet Lane Getting the look of the venue right was just as important as creating the authentic tapas dishes and cocktails, so Adrian employedtalented architect and close friend Paul Brady, to capture a true Latin vibe.

We offered something different people felt like theyd discovered something great tucked away on this backstreet in the citycentre, says Adrian. There wasnt another tapas bar in Sheffield at the time.

Wed already built up contacts with the Latino community from the Viva Salsa night, so they were on board as soon as theydiscovered wed be offering live music.

Cubana had fast become a popular venue for couples, as well as a great place for singletons to mingle. Many long-term couplescomment on how they first met or how they had their first dates there proof that music is the food of love.

Cubana LiveOne of Cubanas proudest moments was hosting a night at Music In TheGardens Festival 2010 in the Botanical Gardens. Cubana Live attracted a sell-out crowd of over 3,500 people and helped raise thousands of pounds forlocal charities.

The extravaganza offered some of the most popular Latin artists, includingOmar Puente and his band. The group arrived in chauffeur-driven 1957Chevrolet convertibles and pulled up in front of the stage, before delivering

    an amazing performance.

Special GuestsOver the years, Cubana have been honoured to welcome many memorable guests.A visit from legendary Cuban band the Buena Vista Social Club in 2007 wascertainly a highlight and Adrian was overwhelmed when the band returned aftertheir second Sheffield City Hall gig in 2008.

Not least, because the highlight of their second visit was when Buena Vistaspianist Rolando Luna took up the offer of playing the classic Latin favouriteGuantamanera alongside the house band on a piano specially hired in for theoccasion.

It was just incredible, the place erupted and the atmosphere was electric itwas a very special night, confirms Adrian.

Once at their new premises at Leopold Square, Cubana was given the ultimateseal of approval when Dr Aleida Guevara, daughter of famous Latin Americanrevolutionary Che Guevara, visited fordinner and posed for a pictureunderneath the portrait of her father.

Other notable guests includePanamanian boxer Roberto Duran, once considered to be the best pound-for-pound fighter of all time, whovisited in 2003 and the cast of LadySalsa following a performance at theLyceum Theatre.

Cubana Mk. II Leopold Square After 14 years building up a reputation as the most vibrant independentCuban bar in Sheffield, it was time to say goodbye to Trippet Lane.

Adrian discovered the two-level venue, formerly Platillos in LeopoldSquare, had become available. After a discussion with business partnerBrad, they decided the time was right to move. Adrian and his team enlisted the help of localartist Paul Staveley and Paul Brady once again to recreate Cubanas trademark style.

Just four days after closing the Trippet Lane venue, the new Cubana was opened. The final Saturday night at the old Cubana felt like a New Years Eve party; people were

looking forward to a potentially exciting future, Adrian recalls. We opened with a big party onThursday 24 July. Over 400 people turned up and it was an incredible atmosphere. We knew

right then, from everyones reaction that it was going towork.

Now offering two floors for two different nights out, diners can enjoy the cosy upstairs area or partydownstairs. Cubana turn over around 300 diners on aSaturday night, many of which stay all night.

You could walk in at 7pm and end up staying until weclose at 2am, says Adrian. Theres great flavoursomefood, courtesy of Chilean head chef Fabrian Cruz whohas been in charge of kitchen affairs since day one, exotic

cocktails, friendly customer service, chilled-out live music andvibrant music to dance to all under one roof.

Cubanas Salsa In The Square has also been a huge success.Since Cubana has taken over hosting the Bank Holiday Sundayextravaganza, attendance numbershave doubled and Adrian looksforward to offering a live Cuban salsaband, salsa lessons, dance demos and

more in May 2016.So, after 14 years brightening up Trippet Lane and a successful first

year adding a vibrant mix of Cuban flavour to Leopold Square, howwill Adrian and his team be celebrating their success?

Of course, there will be a big party, but Brad and I are going overto Cuba in January too, says Adrian. Its such a great place and wellget loads of inspiration. Well be treating that as our 15th birthday present.

If youre looking for a lively venue with the full package, Cubana can provide the deliciousfood, the colourful cocktails and the live entertainment to start your festive season.

THE past 20 years have beensomething of a rollercoaster forAsh. Theyve gone from athree-piece to a four-piecethen back to a three-pieceafter the departure of CharlotteHatherley in 2006, their secondalbum 1977 almost left thembankrupt (despite NME namingit one of the 500 greatestalbums of all time), whilst thecritically-acclaimed Free AllAngels saved them andremains their most well-knownalbum, featuring chart-toppers,Shining Light and Burn BabyBurn.

After releasing their sixthstudio album Kablammo! andselling out their UK spring tourearlier this year, Ash are backfor an extensive Decembertour.

Ahead of their gig at TheLeadmill on Thursday 10December, frontman TimWheeler talks to PhoebeSeymour about the highs, thelows and why hes lookingforward to playing thelegendary Sheffield venue.

Ashs sound has changed somuch over the years, howdoes Kablammo! comparewith previous albums? Weve stuck to our earlysound. Weve looked back atthe song-writing that made1977 and Free All Angels sogood. But we also wanted tocreate an album that wouldsound good live as a three-piece. Weve been touring fora while without bringing outany new material so we reallywanted to rejuvenate our liveset. Kablammo! came out inMay and weve had a reallygood response.

Whats your favourite trackon the new album and why? I really like Cocoon. Its avery simple song, but its got alot of early ingredients of Ashin it. Its good to remember tokeep it simple sometimes.

Youre playing The Leadmillthis month. What can weexpect from the show? Its going to be great because

its a place weve loved playingover the years. We like to playthe hits and some newer stuff. They all go down very well. One of our first ever UK tourdates was at The Leadmillwith Elastica. The night wewere playing, Justine (Elasticasfrontwoman) was ill so we hadto step in and not headline, but let people come and seeus anyway. But it was cool.

Ash have had their fairshare of ups and downsover the years. What havebeen the highlights andlowest points?Highlights 1995 when wereleased Girl From Mars. That changed everything. And the second albumdidnt do too well and wewere pretty close tobankruptcy after that.

What kept you going? We were so young and feltlike it couldnt be over sosoon. It was a dream to bemaking music, so we didnt

want to let that go. Wefocussed really hard on thesongs to come back with FreeAll Angels so another highlightwas getting Shining Light inthe charts and it becoming ahit that really saved us.

In 1997, you headlinedGlastonburys PyramidStage on the Sunday. It wasstill early days for the band. How did that come aboutand how did you feel? We headlined the Other Stageon the Friday night and luckilywe were still hanging out. Itwas pretty cool. We didnt have a lot ofmaterial to play at that point, but I think we did quite welland saved the day. I rememberlooking out from the PyramidStage and it was really magical.
