The rush of Republican-controlled states to mounta challenge to the SupremeCourt’s landmark Roe v.Wade ruling legalizingabortion nationwide hassparked confusion about

what these new lawsactually do.

Here’s what you needto know.

Ten states have tightenedrestrictions on abortions thisyear, and similar measuresare pending in other states. The new laws have promptedquestions about whether

women who have abortionscould be punished and whysome of the pieces of legisla-tion are called “heartbeatbills,” among other topics.

These restrictions general-ly are meant to provoke legalchallenges that ultimatelyelevate the issue tothe Supreme Court.

“I have prayed my waythrough this bill,” saidAlabama state Rep. TerriCollins, a Republican whosponsored that state’s abor-tion ban, on Tuesday. “Thisis the way we get where wewant to get eventually.”

ASHEBORO — Toni For-mato looked out at a sea of bluecaps and gowns Wednesday,May 8, and asked her class-mates to raise their hands ifthey had ever been told theycouldn’t do something. The seaturned into an ocean of raisedarms and nodding heads.

“The whole reason youare sitting here today is younever gave up,” she said.

The surroundings may havebeen new, but the familiarcheers, smiles and tears — and,of course, pomp and circum-stance — were ever-present asclose to 300 Randolph Commu-nity College graduates crossedthe stage to receive theirdegrees, diplomas or certifi-cates at the Fieldhouse at theGreensboro Coliseum Complex.

Family members and friendsfilled the venue while otherswatched the ceremony via livevideo feed. All witnessed theblue mortar boards — somebedazzled with phrases like“Bad to the Bone,” “My Turn toTeach,” “Rad Grad” and “PraySlay” and others decorated withflowers and Pantone swatches.

Formato, Student Govern-ment Association president and

now a 2019 graduate, gave theopening remarks and the invo-cation. She earned an Associatein Arts degree and will attendthe Unversity of North Caro-lina at Chapel Hill in the fall.

RCC President Dr. Rob-ert Shackleford Jr. welcomedthe 2019 class, leaving themwith a piece of advice: “Don’tlet anyone limit, in yourmind, what you want to be.”

Shackleford then introducedguest speaker Peter Hans,North Carolina CommunityCollege System (NCCCS) presi-dent, who welcomed the “sea ofArmadillos” and said he hopedto provide the graduates with“good advice for a good life.”

“Find what you love andthen find a way to makemoney doing it,” said Hans, who grew up in Southport andHendersonville before earninga Bachelor of Arts degree inpolitical science from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Master ofLiberal Arts in Extension Stud-ies from Harvard University.“Time is a precious resource— use it wisely. You aren’tsaying ‘Goodbye’ to learn-ing; invest in yourself. Lastly, keep your family and yourfriends and your faith close.”
