    The Owl 03The Owl 34

Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history.

    Initially

formed in 1998 as Lincoln shire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former

Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with

both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly.

In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within

the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which

the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the

club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30

teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one

of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The

excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with

Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further

underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching

    alongside enjoyment for youngsters.

The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been

spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the

2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of

the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in anamazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary

Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season

saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge

Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season

in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories

along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and

    staff.

The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was

brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak

mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow

slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games

remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and

we managed to secure the title with one game to go.

The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil theirimmediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful

    lower league football club.

later . From which, centre-bac kMatthew Coleman had a great chanceto open the scoring but he headed justwide having rose above his marker.

There was one final chance of the halfand it fell to Oglesby however heheaded over the bar after Luke Mascalldid well on the wing to whip long crossin.

The referee blew his whistle momentslater to signal the end of a veryentertaining first half at the BradleyCommunity Stadium.

Both sides remained unchanged afterthe break as Albion sports restartedthe game. It was Albion who had agreat chance within the opening 30seconds, as the Owls seemed to switchoff. The ball pinged around the box,but eventually it fell to Delroy Faceybut he swung and missed the ballcompletely however it then fell toJames Grogan but his shot was blockedby Coleman saving a certain goal.

The second half had barely gotunde rway and Albi on had anotheropportunity as Ferdinand Annor skeweda shot wide of the mark from 15 yardsout.

The Owls never seemed to get off themark in the opening minutes after thebreak and once more it was Albion whospur ned two grea t cha nces in 30seconds. It was in the 53rd minute asDanny Facey first saw his one-on-oneshot blocked by Beattie then seconds

later he completely missed the targetfrom 18 yards with the Owls defendersscrambling backwards.

The pressure was relieved a fewminutes later as Oglesby tested thekeepers skills from distance but hewas more than equal to it on thisoccasion.

The Owls continued to press forward inthis stage of the game and just as thehour mark elapsed Robertson managedto skew a shot wide after Oglesby hadplayed a delicious cross-field ball tohis fellow wing er.

The Owls made their firstsubst ituti on bring ing onJack Debnam and taking offRobertson in an attempt tomix things up. Just a fewminutes later, the tiredlooking Grant was alsoreplaced, by Chris Funnell, this time.

    T h e c h a n g e s m a d e a nimmediate impact with Debnamand Funnell causing havoc asthey tried to break the offsidetrap on many occasions.

With the game having only 15minutes left, and Albion makingtwo changes themselves, it wasthe visitors who where startingto have the better chances. Inthe 76th minute, Danny Faceywas guilty of missing a sitterfrom inside the area.

The pressure was mounting, butit was the Owls on the up threeminutes later as Oglesby wentclose from distance. It was thenFunnell who saw his shotdeflected wide after Debnamhad held the ball up well andplayed it into his path.

With the final five minutesappr o ach i ng , R i cha r ds o n ,Funnell and Debnam all hadgood chances but failed to hitthe target on each occasions. At the other end, Delroy Faceyand Cusack also both came

close to stealing the victory butthe quality of finishing waslacking from both side.

The game looked like it wasgoing to end 0-0, however bothsides had a chance to win it atthe end but only one tooktheres. The first chance fell toHanslip in the 92nd minute,Debnam played a diagonal ballin the path of Hanslip, whoturned well but was stretchingas he shot just inches wide ofthe mark.

At the other end, Delroy Faceywent on a mazy run inside the

straight from the kick-off giving theOwls no chance to reply. The win forAlbion Sports leaves them 12th in thetable whilst the Owls finish the day in6th. A point would have been fairhowever, it was not meant to be andwe wish Albion Sports luck for the restof the season. The lads can be proud ofthemselves for their valiant effort thisevening.

Cleethorpes Town fell to a narrowdefeat this evening to Albion Sports intheir first home NCEL Premier Divisiontie. A 94th minute penalty settled the

tie after it looked like the points wereshared . Alex Cusack was the man whotook responsibility deep into injury whocoolly slotted the ball past Owls keeperBrad Beattie.

The Owls made two changes to thestarting line-up from their 6-2 win atthe weekend over Liversedge. LawrenceHeward came in for the injured LeeMcFarland (warm-up injury) and JackRichardson replaced the unavailableAlex Flett.

Albion on the other hand started withtwo ex-professional players in the formof ex-Bolton, Hull City and RotherhamUnited striker Delroy Facey and veteranwinger Lee Elam, formerly of Southport,Yeovil Town and Exeter City to name afew.

The match started out with the visitors

penning the Owls inside their own halfhowever it was the hosts who had thefirst real chance of the game. JonathanOglesby shot on sight from 25 yards butAlbions keeper Arron Brian was on handto save the shot.

The first chance for the visitors camewith six minutes on the clock as DelroyFacey headed narrowly over the barfrom a corner delivered from the right.

The pressure kept on mounting for theOwls however breaking forward was notan issue as Brody Robertsons bursts ofpace seem to cause Albion some troublewhen counter-attackin g. This wasevident when with just 9 minutes on the

clock, Robertson linked well withcaptain Darren Hanslip inside thebox, but the referee blew for afoul on the keeper after minimal

contact by the captain with thegoal gaping.

At the other end, Beattie had tothink quickly when Elam tried tocurl a shot past the keeper but hehad seen it early and leapt topalm the shot away to safety.

Only three minutes later, Elamwas once again caus ing anuisance as he tried to chipBeattie from just outside the areabut the back peddling Beattie wasjust quick enough to grab the ballout of the night sky.

Louis Grant, starting his secondgame of the season, was next onhand to test Albions keeper. He

performed a pirouette with the ball, creating enoug h room to unleash arasping effort from 20 yards but the

keeper was more than equal to it.The hosts kept putting pressure onAlbion and had it not being for thedef end ing of Jam es Fi r t h thenRobertson would surely of scored withthe goal at his mercy.

Robertson was again involved in the21st minute but this time at the wrongend as he lost possession in a dangerous

area just outside the box to Elam but hecould not produce anything magical ashis shot was tame and straight atBeattie.

The ball was in the back of the net justthree minutes later, but the joy wasshort lived as the linesman on the farside had his flag up for offside after anOglesby cross was flicked on by top goalscorer Marc Cooper but Grant was in anadvance positi on according to theofficial.

Grant was fouled 25 yards out momentslater and it was Cooper who took aimafter scoring two free kicks on Saturday. However this one was off target and notin the back of the net like the othertwo was.

Elam was guilty of missing a greatchance as the clock ticked over the 30minute marker as he found himselfinside the box, but his angled shot withthe outside of the boot was wide of themark with Beattie looking on helpless.

With only eight minutes of the halfremaining tired legs were playing theirpart and Oglesby took full advantage ofthis as he travelled 40 yards with theball but his skills on the way was notmatched by his finish as it went wide ofthe mark.

The Owls kept up the pressure and thehigh line and forced a corner 45 seconds

GOODevening and welcome back to The Bradley Community Stadiumfor the visit to Borrowash Victoria in our first FA Cup match...

A very warm welcome to you

    all on this momentous

    occasion as we welcome

    Borrowash Victoria in our

    first ever FA Cup tie.

    Our preparations for this

    game have gone well and

    after speaking got managerM a r c u s N e w e l l , I a m

confident we will give a very

    good account of ourselves.

    We started our NCEL Premier

    Division campaign away at

    Liversedge in West Yorkshire

    last Saturday. We won that

game 6-2 and in the end our

    fitness paid off.

    Then on Wednesday we

    hosted Albion Sports in our

    first home tie. We narrowly

lost 1-0 on the night thanks

to a 94th minute penaltyscored by John Cusack. I

    believe we deserved at least

a point but thats what this

level of football is like, you

    miss your chances and you

will be punished in one way

    or another. However, we

must move on now to today.

I hope that Borrowash had a

    safe journey to the seaside

    today and hope they enjoy

    their day out.

Our next home tie is this

    Wednesday against Parkgate

and I hope to see you there.

    We played well against

    Albion Sports on wednesday

    night against a very strong

    side. I thought we looked

    the better side on the

night. I think it was a

    penalty as we cannot leave

a leg like that at this level

as strikers will find it and

    go down. We are playing

    against very clever players

    at this level.

    In the opening two games

of the season we have not

    started the best. This needs

    improving on for sure, we

    still don't manage the

    games as we should.

    Albion are a very good

    talented tam who have

    been successful over the

last few seasons but wematched and outplayed

them for long periods of the

    game.

Enough of the past and lets

    concentrate on the future

    and onto todays game

    against Derbyshire side

    Borrowash Victoria. I expect

    them to be well organised

and be a tough team to

    play. As we know anything

can happen in the FA Cup sowe are not taking anything

    for granted.

I would like to thank you for

    all the support, both home

and away, its great to see

our fan base increasing on a

    weekly basis. Its a great

honor and a privilege to be

apart of this great club and

    long may it continue.

It's a historic day inCleethorpes Towns history

so lets get behind the boys

and make this a day to

    remember.

The gamestarted at great pace withteams trying to playfootball and keep the balldown.

The football played in thefirst half was a joy towatch with some qualityinterplay creating a coupleof half chances but on thewhole the Owls kept the

    ball well.

In the second half CGBHumbertherm took the leadthrough Danny Trott with aquick-fire shot that foundthe bottom corner.

Borrowash Victoria AFC was founded in

the summer of 1911. Like many clubs of

the time Borrowash did not start with a

blaze of glory. Popular belief is that the

    only illumination for the inaugural

meeting was the gas-lights of Elm Street.

However this wasnt to put the fledgling

members off. They secured a pitch,

    Coffee Joes Field, and changing

    facilities. Though opposing teams must

have wondered at the mile and a half

    walk between the two.

From this modest start the club enjoyed a

challenging future. Two World Wars halted

play, but on each occasion the club

    reformed once peace returned. Off-field

challenges saw the club disband and

reform on three occasions. Despite all of

this the will of the locals to have a

    football team represent their village

remained unchecked. Maybe that is what

makes the club motto so relevant Palma

non sine pulvere No Victory without

    effort.

The present club commenced in 1963

when a group led by Tony Beardsley tired

of the restrictions of the youth league.

With the support of Albert Anderton and

Neville Hardy the new team started

playing in the depths of Section E of the

Derby Welfare League. The new team was

    christened, Borrowash Victoria Amateur

Football Club, or simply The Vics to thelocals.

Only three years later, and following early

successes in both league and cup, the

popularity of the club lead to the creation

of a reserve team. One major difference

back then was that the teams didnt have

a manager and it was not until January

1968 that the first manager was

appointed, one Mr Arnold Grace. He led

the team to promotion in his opening

season and developed the teams standing

tremendously until he left the club in

1968 due to ill health. Arnold did not

however retire from The Vics entirely and

    returned as chairman in 1975.

No doubt it was that spirit that

    encouraged ex-international Alan Hinton

to sign for the club in 1977, an event that

saw the TV cameras at a Vics game for the

first and only time. Incidentally, Alan was

spotted by the cameras at the end of thegame taking the nets down. I doubt any of

us will see such a turn of events again.

The modern era of sponsorship finally

reached Borrowash in time for the

    1977/78 season, Mr P Siddall a local

    building contractor. In exchange for

bearing Siddalls name on the shirts, Mr

Siddall provided funds and a concrete

floor in the equipment hut. Ever practical

    at The Vics.

The 1977/78 season also provided the

clubs first major championship, the East

    Midlands Regional League Premier

Division. However things looked dicey at

the end of the 1980/81 season with a

mass of resignations from the committee.

As always The Vics pulled through and a

face from today made his entrance to the

stage. Ian Anderson turned from playing

    staff to president (and sponsor).

The most challenging episode in therecent history of the club also happened

under Ians reign. In 1983 the club were

    threatened with expulsion from the

league due to settlement of a drain below

the pitch making it unplayable. In those

circumstances many a club has folded but

The Vics rolled up their sleeves, repaired

the pitch for the remainder of the season

before moving to their new and current

    home, The Bowl.

I received a phone cal l late onenight before we played Hal lam FCabout joining the Owls, 24 hourslater I knew I wanted to move...

    FACT FILE:

Louis, you joined the Owls in Januaryfollowing a transfer from local rivalsGrimsby Borough, how did the move

come about?I received a phone call about 11pm on theFriday night before we played Hallam at

home and after the game I knew were Iwanted I be.

Do you like to train or do you prefer to be

on the pitch kicking a ball about? How

does work effect your training?I don't mind training at all. The sessions are

always good ones. I'm fortunate enoughwork hasn't really affected my training orplaying too much.

So, take me back to the beginning, how

did you first get into football?I started playing from a young age, about

two years old if I remember correctly and itkind of went from there.

It took you a while to get scoring since

your move, was it a relief to finally score(Even though we actually lost the game)?Yes it was a big relief to get the goal but

    obviously results come first.

You played in various positions acrossthe front line during the end of theseason, what is this your preferred

    position?

Definitely up top. I don't mind playinganywhere as long as I'm playing but

definitely up top if I had the choice.

Winning the league must of been great, tell me about the emotions you wentthrough?

Obviously it was great winning the league. Ihad only been here since January but it wasa great achievement from the lads.

Marcus has had a successful time as the'gaffer', why do you think this is?

Marcus is great, a top top manager.Definitely the best I have played for and allthe lads have a lot of respect for him.

What can we expect from The Owls this

season, mid-table? Top 6? Promotion?I'd like to say promotion again. There is a

great squad here and all the lads want toplay as high as we possibly can.

    Lastly, 2 goals in 13 games hasn't been a

great return, what can we expect fromyou this season? No, a real poor return to be honest. One I

was definitely ashamed of. But Ive beentraining since early June and feel confidentthat I can score goals at any level. My aim isto defiantly score a lot more goals than I did

    last year.
