Cleethorpes Town has come a long way in its relatively short history. Initially formed in 1998 as Lincolnshire Soccer School, it was the brainchild of former Grimsby Town player Tommy Watson. The team was an immediate success with both boys and girls across every age group and the club began to grow quickly.

In 2003, the club set up a flagship senior team. In the team's first season within the Lincolnshire League they secured a credible fourth place finish for which the foundations for the future were set. Now rebranded Cleethorpes Town, the club has redeveloped into an important community outlet. With almost 30 teams competing at every level of local and regional football, the Owls are one of the largest clubs in the area and still continues to expand in all areas. The excellent array of teams and high quality coaching saw the club awarded with Football Association Charter Standard Community Club Status thus further underlining the clubs commitment to providing high quality football coaching alongside enjoyment for youngsters.

The development and evolution of Cleethorpes Town Football Club has been spearheaded by the first team. With the arrival of a new manager during the 2010-11 season it saw the club who were languishing in the lower echelons of the Sills and Betteridge Lincolnshire League go on to finish the season in an amazing third place finish. In addition, the club collected the Supplementary Cup by defeating Heckington United in the final at Sincil Bank. 2011-12 season saw us not only become champions of the Lincs League but also the Challenge Cup winners. Additionally the club was accepted into the NCEL. Our first season in the league saw us finish fourth in the table with some impressive victories along the way. It was a steep learning curve for the players, management and staff.

The 2013-14 started with a change of management and Marcus Newell was brought in. The season started off at a medium pace but a long unbeaten streak mean the Owls were top of the league at christmas. However, we had a slow slow to the new year and fell 7 points behind with only a handful of games remaining. With the pressure at its highest, others around us felt it most and we managed to secure the title with one game to go.

The club is determined to make further strides to improve and fulfil their immediate ambition of becoming North East Lincolnshire's most successful lower league football club.

rebounded off the crossbar and back into play much to the disappointment of the fans and players alike. The Owls were in desperate need of a goal but it didn’t seem like it was on the cards as Cooper missed a header from 5 yards out and then Debnam, in a similar move missed from 8 yards out at the back post in the next attack.

However, the homes fans were up on their feet in the 41st minute as Cooper volleyed the ball past the Carlton keeper from the edge of the area following a Robertson cross.

The half ended a few minutes later but not after the visitors had a long-range effort on goal saved by Steer. The Owls knew though that the second half would be tough due to Carlton’s resilience.

The second half started like the first, with a flurry of chances for the Owls. Firstly, Danny Grant tried his luck from 35 yards, in search of his first goal for the Owls, but it was blocked as it looked like it was hitting the target. Secondly, Debnam fired narrowly high and wide following a Danny Grant lofted pass into the channel.

Then, in the 53rd minute Matthew Coleman headed against the crossbar and from the rebound Louis Gant hooked his shot over the bar.

At the other end, Carlton were struggling in front of goal since the break but created a chance in the 57th minute when Ogede-Uzokwe found himself ahead of the last line of defence with the ball and only had Steer to beat. As he bared down on goal and Steer sprinting out to narrow the angle he decided to chip the keeper but he put it wide of the mark with the goal at his mercy.

The Owls had to soak up a bit of pressure from the visitors in the moments following this. However, the Owls broke quickly forward and there were shouts for a penalty as Debnam was clattered to the ground but the referee waved away all the appeals.

Following that, a corner was delivered in from the left hand side and McFarland out leapt his marker but his bullet header was

cleared off the line much to his disappointment.McFarland was in the thick of the action some minutes later as he was beaten to the ball by Ogede-Uzokwe, but as he was about to pull the trigger McFarland made a last ditch tackle. A scramble then ensued with the ball pinging around the pitch but after two further shots on goal were blocked and eventually it was ushered out for a goal kick.

Danny Grant did well linking up with Robertson but shot narrowly over the bar in the 72nd minute as the Owls searched for an equaliser. However, Carlton still pushed forward and looked dangerous on the break with Ogede-Uzokwe going close once more.

Leading scorer Cooper looked to add to his tally with just 14 minutes left but his shot went wide of the mark from a tight angle. Then Robertson tried from a similar position, but this resulted in the same outcome. As the clock ticked down the Owls made three substitutions bringing on Jack Richardson, Nicholas Goodwin and Nathan Emson in replace of Jack Debnam, Matthew Coleman and Louis Grant.

The change of personnel had an immediate impact as the Owls equalised with just four minutes of the 90 remaining. Cooper nodded on a long pass into Robertsons path who raced clear and poked the ball home was the despairing keeper.

Further chances fell to both sides as the clocked ticked over into injury time. Firstly, Cooper shot straight at the keeper from close in then Danny Grant was heroic as he cleared off the line as Hooten nipped in in front of Steer and with the goal gaping his shot was cleared inches in front of the line.

A fantastic flowing move deep into i n j u r y t i m e n e a r l y s a w a winner for the O w l s a s Robertson’s cross was a toes length away from Cooper as he slid in but missed the ball.

Just 45 seconds later though, the ball was in the back of Carlton’s net a n d Ro b e r t s o n w a s peeling away celebrating l i ke a l i t t l e boy a t Christmas. The ball fell to the youngster inside the b o x a n d h e c o o l y

slammed it home with virtually the last kick of the game sending the homes fans into ecstasy in scenes similar to the previous rounds FA Cup clash.

The actual last kick of the game fell to Carlton’s Martin Ball who volleyed just inches over the bar from just outside the area. The final whistle was then blown and scenes of jubilation all around the ground was evident.

Brody Robertson’s brace in the final few minutes of this afternoons FA Cup clash with Carlton Town saw Cleethorpes Town into the next round 3-2. Carlton raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to a brace from Junior Ogede-Uzokwe. The Owls pulled a goal back thanks to prolific striker Marc Cooper just before the break but the Owls then left it late once again. Robertson scored the equaliser with just four minutes left then deep into injury time, he scored the winner with nearly the last kick of the game. Another great afternoons entertainment for the Owls fans in this seasons FA Cup.

The Owls were much changed from their 3-2 NCEL League Cup midweek win over Penistone Church. The Owls only notable missing compadres were Luke Mascall and Richard Peck who where both unavailable.

The Owls started the game well and nearly had the ball in the back of the net after just two minutes. Jack Debnam forced his way past two Carlton players and laid it off into Cooper’s path but he could only steer his shot wide of the mark. The pressure kept mounting as the Owls pushed forward. Robertson’s run was just not quick enough from a Lee McFarland long ball as he would have been through on goal just 60 seconds later.

With just six minutes gone, the home side had a second clear cut chance and it was Cooper again who it fell to but once again he shot wide of the keepers left hand post.

The fluid play kept coming and when Louis Grant, Cooper and Lawrence Heward all

linked well together in close-knit quarters it looked like the Owls would stroll to victory with the amount of chances that were been created.Chances kept on coming for the Owls as in the 10th minute Robertson played in Louis Grant but he could only blast over the bar from 10 yards. Just 30 seconds later, both Robertson and Louis Grant were involved again but this time it was Robertson who missed from close range however it would not of counted as Louis Grant had fouled the keeper in the build-up.

At the other end, Carlton finally mustered a chance when Aaron Hooton shot on target but Damian Steer had no issues stopping the mid-range shot. The Millers were on the up as they then took the lead.

Ogede-Uzokwe managed to work space just outside the area and curl a shot past Steer totally against the run of play.

Just three minutes later, Carlton should have extended their lead but Ogede-Uzokwe shot straight at Steer making the save routine. The Owls, in the 14th minute should have equalised as Cooper was racing through on goal but he could only toe-poke his effort straight at Luke Cook in the Carlton goal.

Then Ryan Hastie did well on the wing for Carlton against his marker, Heward. He crossed to Ogedi-Uzokwe but his tame shot at the near post was easily collected by Steer.Jack Debnam then tried his luck from 20 yards out after winning the ball back from his opponent but it was rather a tame effort.Just 30 seconds later, Cooper was played in on goal and as he went around the goalkeeper, he was fouled resulting in a penalty kick and a yellow card for Cook. Debnam took the responsibility on his shoulders but he scuffed his shot and it went well wide of the target from 12 yards out.

This did not put the Owls off though as they pushed forward. Cooper rose above his marker and flicked a header on into the path of Robertson but the youngster could only steer his shot wide of the mark.

With the half hour mark reached, the Owls should of fallen further behind as Steer had to scramble backwards to tip a long cross onto the woodwork and behind for a corner.

From the corner, McFarland had to react smartly as the ball was played in low and was goalbound but he sorted his feet out well and cleared off the line. This was in vein though as just three minutes later, Ogedi-Uzokwe had his second of the game as he volleyed home from 10 yards out.Nearly from the restart, Alex Flett nearly scored as he danced his way past four Carlton players and dinked the ball goal bound but it

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES

GOOD afternoon and welcome back to The Bradley Community Stadium for our first home NCEL Premier League match in nearly a month...

Well, what a few weeks we have had at this great family club of ours.

Firstly, our successes in the FA Vase and FA Cup have been w e l l d o c u m e n t e d accumulating with a 2nd qualifying round against Northern Conference side North Ferriby United next Saturday.

Secondly, following the weekends antics we found out that we had 2 goal posts stolen from our club, the Linden Homes Club during Wednesday/Thursday whilst they where been repaired/painted. I find the behaviour of these thieves disgusting

and immoral. Not only do adults use these goals but also our junior sides and they are having to go without whilst they are been replaced.

Thankfully, after a nationwide appeal on Talksport (Big thanks to Colin Murray), BBC Look North and our online campaign it paid off as local businessman Mike Parker generously donation the money required to replace the posts.

However, we have set up a “Just Giving” page as we are still looking for donations towards repairing previous vandalism to the facilities at Linden.

Anyway, today we welcome Heanor Town who after a great start stumbled in their progress on Wednesday night. Saying that, we also fell to a defeat to Athersley on Wednesday and we will be looking at getting back to winning ways and to try and carry our cup form into league games.

Hopefully we see you back here next week for the biggest game in the clubs history against North Ferriby.

Wednesday night saw us travel to Barnsley to face Athersley Recreation in our first league game in almost a month. We were unlucky not to put any of our chances away and came away having lost 1-0 but we must move on from that.

Todays visitors, Heanor Town will be a good well organised outfit as are all the teams in this league. They and us are capable of beating anyone on the day so it will be an interesting match.

The FA Cup returns to the B r a d l e y C o m m u n i t y Stadium next week as we have been drawn against North Conference side North Ferriby United in what will be a massive test. They are a “proper b i g c l u b ” w h o w e r e unlucky not to be playing conference football this

season but we are a team who can compete with anyone.

We have pace to hurt anyone going forward so we have to make sure we are at the top of our game and believe we can pull off another shock. We have done it twice now so third time lucky for us lets hope.

We l o o k f o r w a r d t o welcoming North Ferriby on the 27th but we have league points up for grabs before then so get behind us.

CLEETHORPES TOWN ‘A’ Was With Mick Gibbons & Andy Cawte

Cleethorpes Towns A’s first home game at The Linden Home Club saw them host Barnoldby FC who had beaten the Owls 5-1 on the opening day 2 weeks earlier.

There was seven changes to the side with new signings Josh Thompson, G a z L e a n i n g , L u k e McLellan and Aiden Turner making their debuts. Josh Garner and Dale Mason played their first game since last seasons A & G Autorepairs FC side and Mikey Milne playing his first game for Cleethorpes Town.

The Owl s settled into the game s t r a i g h t away with a n e w formation that us keep t h e b a l l w e l l . Barnoldby keeper did w e l l t o o k e e p o u t Milne when

he tricked his way into the box.

Milne and Ollie Kirton looked lively up top supported by G e o r g e Haines, with Dale Mason and Aiden Turner looking to get the Owls playing whilst Garner protected the back four of Tom Wingate, Leaning, Andy Allott and Mark Smith. Josh Thompson looking confident in goal.

Barnoldby took the lead after a through ball wasn't cut out and the Barnoldby Player slotted home.

Despite the set back we continued to press but went in 1-0 down.

Second half saw us bring McLellan on for Mason. The fresh legs up top gave us more options with McLellan running at the Barnoldby back four. Kirton just failed too make full contact from a corner but wasn’t long after that when after work from McLellan the ball broke through and Haines lofted the ball over the on-rushing keeper to score his first goal of the season.

With their tails up the Owls pressed for a winner but was un ble to break a solid Barnoldby defence.

In just over two weeks it shows how much they've come on with a great attitude shown to go with the work-rate and football they try to play.

The A team's next game is Saturday 20th September at The Linden Homes Club with a 14:30 kick off.

VISITING TEAM

Heanor Town Football Club owes its humble beginnings to long before their 1883 formation at the Rays Arms Hotel. Teams representing the town and playing under the name of ‘Heanor’ or ‘Heanor Town’ were recorded in 1878, but it was not until a public meeting was called in September 1883 that these fragmented issues were drawn together under one roof and the Club affiliated to the Derbyshire County FA.

They joined the Derbyshire League, but within a decade the Club had established itself as a top Midland League side, on one occasion finishing seventh when the top four were promoted to the Football League. And four times during this period reached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup (today’s equivalent would be the Third Round because the competition then had six Qualifying Rounds) losing to Aston Villa (away) 1-4, Nottingham Forest (away) 0-1, Bury (home) 0-3 and Southampton St. Mary’s (home) 0-1. In the latter game only a broken leg suffered by centre forward Sam Widdowson ensured that Heanor played with ten men for almost 80 minutes this after a 1-1 draw at Southampton. During this period such teams as Mansfield Town, Chesterf ie ld, L incoln City and Northampton Town were beaten in the Qualifying Competition.

Since then, the Lions have played in the Derbyshire League, Mid-Derbyshire League, Midland League (four t imes), Central Combination, Central Alliance, Notts Alliance, West Midlands (Regional) and Northern Counties East. In 1986 they joined the Central Midlands and are the only Club to have held continuous membership of the Supreme Division since its formation. Last season they added the new East Midlands Counties League to the list in which they have competed.

In 1958 Heanor entertained Fourth Division Carlisle United at The Town Ground in the FA Cup First Round losing 1-5 before 6,511 spectators. At the time they were members of the Central Alliance League Division One (North). But the strength of that league at the time can be judged by the fact that Ilkeston Town and Creswell Colliery was other clubs who also graced the FA Cup competition proper. In 1963 The Lions were a Midland League side and once again when they lost at the same stage away to Fourth Division Bradford Park Avenue containing one Kevin Hector and managed by Jimmy Scoular at Bradford in front of a crowd 5,799.

The club’s best Midland League finish was in 1966 when they were runners-up, and twelve months later they were one of only six Midland

League clubs with the best record selected to become founder members of the Northern Premier League. However, the Heanor Committee at the time declined the opportunity because of the costs involved and their place was taken by Goole Town.

The Club has three times reached the Fourth Round Proper of the FA Vase; in 1989 they drew at this stage at home to Eastwood (Hanley) 1-1 but lost the replay by the odd goal of three. And the other two occasions also saw they lose by the same score to Rushden Town (Home) in 1990 and Arnold Town (away) in 2002. They have reached the Third Round Proper on two other occasions losing to Warrington Town and Eccleshill United both away.

Honours decorated the Town Ground trophy cabinet at regular intervals during the 90’s with two Central Midlands League Supreme Division titles in 1995 & 1997 and the last being the Central Midlands League Cup won in a thrilling 5-3 finale against Ollerton Town in 2007.

In 2009 the Club appointed Joint Managers Craig Hopkins and Glenn Kirkwood who set themselves a target to win the East Midlands Counties League championship within three years. In their first season they finished seventh, the season after they improved to third then in their

CLUB HONOURS:third season they achieved their goal when they were crowned champions in front of a home crowd of 154, beating local rivals Blackwell Miners Welfare 1-0 courtesy of a Josh Royce goal in the penultimate game of the season.

Managers Kirkwood and Hopkins left Heanor Town giving short notice on the 12 January 2013 to join local strugglers Mickleover Sports. Jordan Hall, one of the playing squad was appointed as interim manager later that day and guided the club to an 11th place finish in the NCEL Premier league.

In June 2013 local business man Geoff Clarence purchased the club and immediately spent thousands of pounds updating the facilities at the Town Ground including a complete renovation of the ageing clubhouse. Glen Clarence was appointed first team manager assisted by James Baker & Steve Huntington, the trio built a young local squad which improved the club to an 8th placed finish in the league along with two semi final appearances in the Derbyshire and League cups.

This season has seen the addition of Kenny Shinfield into the management set up along with an influx of new talent as the club seeks to win promotion into the Evo stick league at step 4.

WHAT'S THE PROBLEM WE'RE TRYING TO SOLVE?Cleethorpes Town F.C. were unfortunately the victims of a crime last week, we have had our goal posts stolen and are looking to the community to help us in funding of our attempts to purchase new Goal posts for the club and repair previous damages caused by the vandalism to our dugouts and perimeter fences.WHY DO WE CARE ABOUT THIS PROJECT?The club know how important its games are to the community and we need to get this problem addressed as soon as possible to avoid possible postponements to future games due to the lack of goal posts at our disposable.HOW WILL THE MONEY BE SPENT?The whole amount of money raised will go into the buying of the new goal posts, fences and dugouts surrounding our pitch.WHEN WILL WE SEE THE DIFFERENCE?The supporters will see an immediate difference as the goal posts, fencing required and dugouts will be purchased as soon as the adequate funding has been achieved for each.

“I used to play up front, but now I am a l itt le bit more maturer I t h o u g h t I ’ d d r o p b a c k i n t o defence...”

R i c h a r d , y o u a r e o n e o f t h e m o s t experienced players in the squad, how do you keep yourself motivated?I just love playing the game and want to be involved as much as I can.

Do you like to train or do you prefer to be on the pitch kicking a ball about? How does work effect your training?I don’t really mind to be honest. I always try my best even in training. Work doesn’t effect my training as I work 8-4 monday to friday so I am always available to train and for match days.

So, take me back to the beginning, how did you first get into football?I started playing for Sussex FC at the tender age of 6 then I went on to play for Solar Glass until under 10s, then moved onto Grimsby Town until under 16’s.

You joined CTFC in 2011 from Grimsby Borough, how was the transition between the clubs?I dropped down a level to play in the Lincs League with Andy Liddell. I thought that the club was on the way up and wanted to do so with a great bunch of lads.

Who did you make your debut against for The Owls and how did you find it?It was that long ago I don’t remember...

You played at centre-back most of your Owls career, is this your preferred position?

I used to play up front for Grimsby Borough but this is the only position I have ever played in at Cleethorpes Town so it’s something I am used to now.

Winning the league must of been great, tell me about the emotions you went through? It was a great day, I remember it well. It was a relief more than anything as I thought we had blown it around Christmas time so to come back and win the league was amazing.

Marcus has had a successful time as the 'gaffer', why do you think this is?He has the respect of all the lads and it works well. We know his expectations and tries to deliver that as much as possible.

What can we expect from The Owls this season, mid-table? Top 6? Promotion?Hopefully mid-table/top half of the league.

Lastly, tell me about your favourite game you have played in?My favourite game has to be the 0-0 draw away at Worsbrough last season. We travelled down on the Tuesday evening but Gigg (Christopher Gordon) only lasted five minutes before getting sent off leaving us having to play 85 minutes with ten men. But the lads stuck together and grounded out a point, however we could of nicked it towards the end but a point was well earned that night.
