Altar Flowers at the Blessed Mother (August 22, 2020 — August 28, 2020 )

In Memory of Bob Richards

by The Toman Family

Intro: The tone of the scriptures proclaimed on Sunday is beginning to change. For weeks we have been hearing parables of the kingdom, what it means to be a disciple and the meaning of the Messiah’s death. Now the scripture readings for the second half of the season present a different focus: The destination of Jesus’ journey becomes clearer – Jerusalem.

First Reading: Is 22: 19-23 In the book of the prophet Isaiah, the Lord gives another “key”. This time the key of David is given to Eliakim, the steward of King Hezekiah.

Second Reading: Rom 11: 33-36 In the letter to the Romans, St Paul asserts that all things exist from, through, and in God. This reading is one of the scriptural roots of the great doxology, which we hear at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer:” Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, forever and ever. Amen”

Gospel: Matt 16: 13-20 We hear Peter’s great confession of faith in Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus asks what the people are saying about his identity. Peter proclaims Jesus to be the Christ. Jesus promises Peter the keys to the Kingdom.

“Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid?” - Romans 11:35

St. Paul reminds us of a central fact of stewardship. We cannot give the Lord anything, because God already owns it all. God made everything. All that we can do is return a portion of God’s many gifts back to Him. Sincere gratitude for our gifts opens our hearts to joyful generosity!

Weathering the Storm and Planning for a Stronger Future

While we may not know for certain what our future holds, we know that by working together, we have weathered a mighty storm the past few months. We also know that together, we can place our faith with our Lord and take a courageous, hopeful step forward in planning the future of our parish. Last weekend our pastor, Father Erwin, shared information about our Faith,Hope&Courage initiative and a special parish update was made available at Masses and online. This weekend, all parishioners are invited to participate. Your prayers and commitment to the mission of Our Lady of Grace allow us to gauge support and plan for our ministries and outreach for the next year, which serve so many within our community while operating within our means as responsible stewards of God’s grace. We are requesting all parishioners to consider prayer, a one-time gift, and commitment or recommitment to offertory giving. We are also asking parishioners to let their parish family know how we can be of service. Once a decision is made, please complete a commitment card and return it in one of the following ways:

-Bring the card to Mass next weekend -Mail it to the church using the pre-addressed envelope provided or -Visit our parish website at https://ourladyofgrace l.org and complete an electronic

commitment card. Our goal is 100% participation! Thank you for your generosity of spirit and support

of Our Lady of Grace Parish!

May The Road Rise Up To Meet You

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back.

May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields

and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

(Celtic blessing)

Susan,

We all join in wishing you the very best of luck as you embark on your exciting new adventure with your family in New York.

Thank you for your years of service to our children and our parish.

Good Samaritan Project 2020

With the help of ZOOM technology, a Project Team at the Diocese, and an excited group of young people, the Youth Group at Our Lady of Grace was able to participate in the Good Samaritan Project for the

third year...although this year with some modifications for safety due to coronavirus.

The week began with tuning in to a diocesan Zoom where our youth were able to see youth from other parishes as they gathered for the opening night. The week went quickly with a Parish Service day, two Community Service Days, and a day of service to the domestic church. The week was ended with an hour of Eucharistic Adoration with parents.

While different from years past, the 2020 Good Samaritan Project week gave the youth at OLG a chance to serve within their own county and share their time and talent with those closest to them.

Sunday Gospel Reflections from Bishop Parkes

August 23, 2020

Do You Know Who Jesus Is? Do you care what people think of you? Many people are concerned about the way they’re perceived by others. This can certainly be true for the way we’re viewed by our neighbors, our co-workers, and for teens who are trying to fit in with their peers. Generally, we want others to think of us in a good light and not define us by our weaknesses, failures, or faults. In this weekend’s Gospel, we read the account in Matthew’s Gospel, of Jesus asking His disciples two questions about identity and perception. The first question is, “Who do people say that the son of Man is?” And the second is, “But who do you say that I am?” Was our Lord asking Peter this just to satisfy His own ego? Was He checking to see if His message and ministry were effective? The disciples had already witnessed many miracles and learned much from Him. The truth is that He probably didn’t care so much about what the religious leaders or general public was saying about Him. He wanted an answer from the twelve – His closest followers. Peter immediately proclaims, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus desires believers who know Him and that will publicly and without reservation proclaim that He is Lord and Master. By witnessing the miraculous events up to this point, the disciples came to believe. But Jesus reminds them that this was revealed to them by God. Despite some possible hesitation by some in the group, Peter had the courage to proclaim this truth. What if Jesus were to ask you the question, “Who do you say that I am”? Or, if someone were to ask you who Jesus Christ is to you, how would you respond? Would it be an answer based on facts, for example, that He was born in Bethlehem, that Joseph and Mary were His parents, that He was raised in the Jewish faith and traditions. Or would you be able to speak about the difference that your relationship with Jesus Christ has made in your life? Would you be able to proclaim Him as your Savior? Each time we come to Mass, it’s an opportunity to come to know better who Jesus Christ is.

~Bishop Gregory Parkes

Salmo — Señor, tu amor perdura eternamente; obra tuya soy, no me abandones (Salmo 138 [137]).
