2017 GAME SUMMARIES
Game 1
Tampa Bay Storm 46, Cleveland Gladiators 40
In front of 12,865 fans at Quicken Loans Arena, the Cleveland Gladiators, presented by Unique Home Solutions, fell to the Tampa Bay
Storm, 46-40, in Saturday night’s 2017 home opener. Quarterback Shane Boyd passed for 288 yards and five touchdowns in the loss,
while wide receiver Larry Brackins totaled three touchdowns in his Cleveland debut. Tampa Bay quarterback Randy Hippeard threw
for 205 yards and six touchdowns in the victory for the Storm.
The Tampa Bay Storm got on the board first with 2:44 remaining in the first half when Cleveland quarterback Shane Boyd’s quick
screen pass tipped off wide receiver Larry Brackins hands and into the waiting arms of defensive lineman Caesar Rayford for Tampa
Bay. Rayford stumbled four yards into the end zone to give the Storm the early 7-0 lead.
Cleveland answered on their next drive as Boyd found veteran wide receiver Collin Taylor for his first touchdown of the season, a 29-
yarder, to pull even with the Storm 7-7 with 14:29 remaining in the first half.
After a Tampa Bay score, the Gladiators quickly responded on their ensuing drive as Boyd found Taylor for his second touchdown of
the game, a 10-yard strike to give Cleveland its first lead of the game at 14-13 with 4:50 left in the second quarter. The Storm would
however cap off the first half with quarterback Randy Hippeard hooking up with wide receiver Joe Hills for the pair’s second touchdown
of the game, reclaiming the lead for Tampa Bay, 19-14.
The Gladiators opened the second half with the ball and quickly found pay dirt as Boyd connected with wide receiver Brandon
Thompkins on a 24-yard throw and catch to push Cleveland back into the lead. Kicker Drew Basil, an Ohio State alumnus, tacked on
the extra point to make the score 21-19 early in the third quarter.
After a couple of Tampa Bay scores, the Gladiators offense struck again on a two-yard rushing touchdown from Brackins, trimming the
Storm lead to 32-28 with 7:06 remaining in the game. It didn’t take long for Tampa Bay to extend their lead once more as Hills hauled
in his third touchdown of the game, a seven-yarder from Hippeard to push the Storm lead up to 39-28. Cleveland answered once
again, this time an eight-yard toss from Boyd to Brackins to pull the score to 39-34.
After a Storm touchdown put the game out of reach for good, it was Cleveland who capped off the scoring for the evening with a two-
yard touchdown strike from Boyd to Brackins, his third score of the night, giving the opening night victory to Tampa Bay, 46-40.
2017 GAME SUMMARIES
Game 2
Baltimore Brigade 52, Cleveland Gladiators 49
Baltimore got on the board first when Carden found Gray for his first of three touchdowns, this one a five-yard score, leading to a 7-0 Brigade lead early. The Gladiators answered back when Marsh, hit Taylor in the corner of the end zone with an 18-yard touchdown strike. Kicker Drew Basil’s extra point evened things up at the end of the first quarter, 7-7. In the first possession of the second quarter, Carden hooked up with Gray for another touchdown, this time from six yards out to push Baltimore back in front, 14-7. Then with 29 seconds remaining in the first half, Carden hit offensive lineman Ian Joseph with a screen pass that went five yards for another brigade score, extending their lead to 21-7. The Gladiators capped off the first half with a touchdown when Marsh found wide receiver Larry Brackins for a five-yard score as time expired. Basil’s extra point trimmed Baltimore’s lead to 21-14 at the break. After Cleveland forced a turnover on downs to start the second half, Sims ripped away a would-be interception away from defensive back Varmah Sonie for an eight-yard score, dead-locking the score at 21. After Gray caught another touchdown from Carden to reclaim the lead for the Brigade, Marsh found fullback Phillipkeith Manley on a screen for a 31-yard touchdown. Baltimore responded again when Carden hit wide receiver LaQuan Williams for a 13-yard score to go in front once more, 35-28, at the end of the third quarter. Manley found the end zone for a second time on the ensuing drive, plunging forward from one-yard out to pull Cleveland to a 35-35 score. The Brigade immediately answered once again when Sonie returned the kick-off 50 yards for a touchdown, giving Baltimore a 42-35 lead with 11:10 left in the game. On Cleveland’s next drive Marsh fumbled and the ball would be recovered by Baltimore. Carden connected with Williams for a four-yard score two plays later to extend the Brigade lead to 49-35 with 5:17 remaining in the contest. Jack linebacker Arvell Nelson stepped in for Marsh at quarterback on the ensuing drive and quickly found wide receiver Michael Preston for a 34-yard strike before capping the drive with a 12-yard throw-and-catch touchdown to Sims, trimming the Brigade lead to 49-42. Baltimore extended their lead to 52-42 on their next possession when kicker Patrick Clarke booted a 20-yard field goal with 57 seconds left. Nelson would strike again, cutting the deficit to 52-49 when he found Taylor on a 45-yard pass for the Gladiators score with 46 seconds remaining in the game. Kicker Drew Basil’s ensuing onside kick attempt would, however, be recovered by the Brigade, sealing Baltimore’s first-ever franchise win.
2017 GAME SUMMARIES
Game 3
Tampa Bay Storm 62, Cleveland Gladiators 61
Despite eight total touchdowns from QB Arvell Nelson in his first start under center this season, the Cleveland Gladiators were
defeated by the Tampa Bay Storm on Saturday at Amalie Arena in Tampa, FL, by a final score of 62-61.
Cleveland WR Quentin Sims started the scoring with a two-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but a 40 yard touchdown pass
from Tampa Bay QB Randy Hippeard to WR LaMark Brown tied the game at seven with 9:21 remaining in the first. Later in the frame,
Nelson found WR Michael Preston in the end zone for a four-yard TD toss to push the Gladiators’ edge to 13-7 through 15 minutes of
play.
In the second, Nelson connected with Sims for a nine-yard scoring strike to make it 20-7 Cleveland before another Sims touchdown
catch, provided by Nelson from 27 yards out, left the Gladiators in front by a score of 27-7 with 9:24 to go in the opening half. Later in
the second quarter, the Storm attempted a comeback thanks to a Hippeard-to-Kendrick Ings connection to pull within two scores at
27-14, but Nelson scampered into the end zone from three yards out with just under four minutes left in the second quarter to push
the Cleveland lead to 19 points at 33-14.
From there, the Storm rattled off four unanswered touchdowns spanning the end of the first half and the third quarter, all on Hippeard
throws, one to Brown and three to WR Joe Hills respectively, to claim their first lead at 42-33 early in the final stanza. Cleveland’s
offense sprang to life in the fourth however, as Nelson and Sims hooked up through the air from 11 yards out with just over ten
minutes to play to draw within three points of Tampa Bay at 42-39, but the Storm re-extended their advantage to double digits with
a seven-yard Hippeard touchdown run that made it 49-39.
The Gladiators strung together a 16-yard strike from Nelson to Sims with a successful two-point conversion reception by WR Collin
Taylor to draw within two at 49-47, but the Storm responded with a 19-yard Hippeard-to-Hills pitch and catch with 2:08 to go that
nudged the Tampa Bay lead to 56-47. Cleveland’s Nelson supplied back-to-back touchdown throws from there, from one-yard out to
Preston and 37-yard bomb to Sims that, combined with one successful two-point conversion, again provided by Taylor, left Cleveland
back in front at 61-56 with just 28 seconds to play. An artful final drive was orchestrated by Hippeard and the Storm however, and the
Tampa Bay signal-caller capped the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run with three seconds left that, after an unsuccessful two –
point conversion attempt, established the home team’s final margin of victory at 62-61.
2017 GAME SUMMARIES
Game 4
Cleveland Gladiators 48, Washington Valor 34
Thanks to major contributions from a host of players on both sides of the ball, the Cleveland Gladiators improved to 1-3 on the season
with a 48-34 victory over the Washington Valor on Friday in front of 9,223 fans at The Q. Gladiators QB Arvell Nelson led the way
offensively, providing 243 yards and three touchdowns through the air on 20/34 passing and adding 60 rushing yards and two scores
on the ground on five carries.
Cleveland started the scoring with a six-yard rushing touchdown from WR Quentin Sims in the first quarter, but Valor QB Erik Meyer
connected with Washington WR TT Toliver later in the frame to tie the game at seven heading into the second quarter of play.
Nelson provided a five-yard rushing touchdown to make it 14-7 Gladiators early in the second before Meyer and WR Roger Jackson
hooked up from nine yards out to tie the game at 14 apiece. Later in the quarter Nelson completed his first touchdown toss to WR
Brandon Thompkins to reclaim the lead for Cleveland at 21-14, but a Toliver rushing score again leveled things for the Valor minutes
later. Washington went on to claim their first edge at 27-21 when Meyer connected with WR Greg Carr from eight yards out in the
first half’s final minute and, after Nelson threw an interception moments later, the visitors maintained their advantage heading into
halftime.
In the third quarter, Nelson sparked the Gladiators’ offense with a highlight-reel 43-yard scoring scamper to tie the game, then handed
the ball to FB PhillipKeith Manley on Cleveland’s next possession, who bulldozed his way into the end zone from one yard out to make
it 33-27 Gladiators. From there, Nelson and Sims combined for an eight-yard touchdown reception that capped a 20-0 run for the
home team and pushed Cleveland’s lead to 41-27 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth, a Meyer-to-Carr touchdown pass drew the Valor within a score at 41-33, but the Gladiators slammed the door with a
39-yard bomb from Nelson to WR Collin Taylor on fourth down with six minutes left that polished off Cleveland’s final margin of
victory at 48-34.
2017 GAME SUMMARIES
Game 5
Philadelphia Soul 69, Cleveland Gladiators 67
The Arena Football League’s Cleveland Gladiators, proudly presented by Unique Home Solutions, were defeated by the Philadelphia Soul in Week 5 of the 2017 AFL season on Saturday at The Q by a final score of 69-67. With the loss, the Gladiators fell to 1-4 this season and currently remain alone in fifth place in the AFL standings heading into a Week 6 bye. The Gladiators claimed a 7-0 lead in the first quarter when QB Arvell Nelson connected with WR Quentin Sims from 12 yards out, but Philadelphia responded on their first offensive snap with a 41-yard catch and run from Soul QB Dan Raudabaugh to WR Darius Reynolds to tie the game at seven. Cleveland re-claimed their edge with a seven-yard scoring strike from Nelson to WR Brandon Thompkins to make it 13-7 before the Soul took their first lead at 14-13 by virtue of a 30-yard Raudabaugh toss to FB Mykel Benson. Later in the first quarter, Nelson and Sims hooked up from 33 yards out to make it 20-14 Gladiators, but Philadelphia’s offense provided a nearly instant punch back, courtesy of Raudubaugh’s third touchdown pass of the game, this time a 21-yard connection to WR Ryan McDaniel to make it 21-20 Soul. In the second quarter, Benson provided a rushing score from two yards out to push the Soul lead to 27-20 before another Raudabaugh score, this time to WR Shaun Kauleinamoku from 13 yards out, made it 34-20 for Philadelphia. Cleveland scratched back to within a score with a three-yard Nelson rushing touchdown to make it 34-27 Soul late in the first half, but Philly made it 41-27 with Rauduabaugh’s fifth passing TD to Reynolds from 30 yards away. The Gladiators provided the last laugh in the half, however, with a one-yard Nelson rushing score that made it 41-34 heading into the third quarter. Raudabaugh started the third quarter the same way he ended the second, with a score through the air, this time a 14-yard connection with Kauleinamoku, to make it 48-34. Nelson sparked the Gladiators offense with an 18-yard rushing score on Cleveland’s next possession to pull within eight at 48-40, but yet another Philadelphia passing touchdown, from Raudabaugh to Reynolds from three yards out, made it 55-40 for the visitors. In the fourth quarter, Nelson drew the Gladiators within a score with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Thompkins to make it 55-48, but Philadelphia’s Benson provided a one-yard rushing score moments later to nudge the Soul edge to 62-48 with 12-plus minutes to go. From there, Nelson connected with WR Collin Taylor for a 23-yard scoring strike to make it 62-54 before Raudabaugh hooked up with Reynolds from 38 yards out to run the Soul lead to 69-54. A Thompkins 53-yard kick return netted another Cleveland score to draw the Gladiators within a single scoring play at 69-61, but a failed two-point conversion attempt for Cleveland following a Nelson touchdown throw to OL Aslam Sterling established the home team’s final margin of defeat at 69-67.

Philadelphia Soul 64, Cleveland Gladiators 46
The Soul got the scoring started early when quarterback Dan Raudabaugh hit wide receiver Shaun Kauleinamoku with a one-yard
scoring strike. Following a Cleveland turnover, Raudabaugh found wide receiver Ryan McDaniel for a 19-yard score to quickly put
Philadelphia in front 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Gladiators quarterback Arvell Nelson got Cleveland on the board in the second quarter when he found wide receiver Larry Brackins
streaking down the field for a 21-yard touchdown, trimming the Soul lead to 14-7. Raudabaugh and the Philadelphia offense quickly
responded when the veteran quarterback hooked up with wide receiver Darius Reynolds for nine yards and another Soul touchdown.
On the ensuing kickoff, Cleveland wide receiver Brandon Thompkins took the kick-off and bolted 51 yards for a touchdown, pulling
the Gladiators to within a touchdown.
It was Philadelphia’s offense, however, who capped off a strong opening half when Raudabaugh and Reynolds paired up for two more
Soul touchdowns, to lead the home team into the break with a 34-13 lead.
After jack linebacker Joe Goosby’s second interception of the game opened the second half, Kauleinamoku found pay dirt for the
second time on the night, this time a 25-yarder from Raudabaugh to increase the Soul lead to 41-13. Cleveland answered on their next
drive when Nelson hit Brackins for his second touchdown of the game, a three-yard score to trim the Philadelphia lead to 41-20, but
the Soul quickly bumped the lead back up to 28 when Raudabaugh found offensive lineman Neal Tivis for an eight-yard screen,
extending the lead once again to 48-20.
The Gladiators followed that up with two quick scores of their own as Nelson found Brackins for his third touchdown of the night, then
hit wide receiver Quentin Sims for a 29-yard scoring strike, cutting the Soul lead down to 48-32. A failed onside kick on the ensuing
kickoff, however, led to a swift answer from the Soul as fullback Mykel Benson plunged into the end zone from one yard out to pad
the Philadelphia lead, 55-32, with 8:55 remaining in the game.
The Nelson-Brackins duo struck for a fourth time on Cleveland’s next series, a 13-yarder this time, to cut the score to 55-40 with 6:02
left in the game. Raudabaugh and the Soul offense pulled away for good when Kauleinamoku caught his third touchdown of the game,
a 12-yarder to push the lead to 62-40. The Gladiators capped the scoring when Nelson found Sims for a seven-yard touchdown. The
two-point conversion would be returned by Philadelphia for two points, making the final score 64-46.

Baltimore Brigade 63, Cleveland Gladiators 60
The Gladiators claimed a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when QB Arvell Nelson connected on a 15-yard scoring strike with WR Quentin
Sims before Nelson and Sims combined again, this time from seven yards out, to make it 12-0 Cleveland thanks to a pair of botched
extra-point attempts for the Gladiators. Baltimore put themselves on the scoreboard late in the opening quarter when Brigade QB
Shane Carden connected with WR Milton Williams from 11 yards out to, after a successful Brigade extra point try, make it 12-7
Gladiators.
In the second quarter, Cleveland picked up right where they left off as a 21-yard strike from Nelson to Sims extended the Glads’ lead
to 18-7 after another missed extra point for K Jed Solomon. After Baltimore’s Carden connected with WR Julian Talley on a 39-yard
touchdown pass to make it 18-14, the Gladiators faced a fourth-and-eight situation from the Brigade nine yard line late in the second
quarter and, thanks to a nine-yard connection between Nelson and WR Collin Taylor, pushed the Cleveland advantage to 25-14. The
Brigade battled back and drew within four points at 25-21 following a three-yard Rory Nixon touchdown run with just 2:05 remaining
in the opening half. Then, in the final minute of the second quarter, Nelson pushed Cleveland’s edge to 32-21 with a seven-yard rushing
touchdown before his counterpart for Baltimore, Carden, responded with a one-yard scoring scamper of his own with just one second
remaining to make it 32-28 Gladiators at the half.
In the third quarter, the Brigade started quickly with a 12-yard strike from Carden to Williams to push Baltimore in front for the first
time by a score of 34-32. The Gladiators’ response was quick in coming, however, as Nelson and Sims connected on a touchdown pass
and catch for the fourth time just seconds after Baltimore’s score, this time from 29 yards out, to reclaim the edge for Cleveland at
39-34.
With just under nine minutes remaining in regulation, the Brigade picked up the fourth quarter’s first score when Carden found Talley
in the end zone from 13 yards out to reclaim the lead for the home team at 41-39 following a Nelson interception. Cleveland
orchestrated a near-instantaneous response, however, as Nelson connected with Sims for the fifth time on the visitors’ next play from
scrimmage, a 47-yard strike that pushed the Gladiators back in front by a score of 46-41 with 7:33 to go in the game. Carden found
Browning shortly thereafter for a 42-yard touchdown to make it 49-46 Baltimore, but Nelson and Taylor hooked up for the second
time, this time from 31 yards out, on the Glads’ ensuing possession to grab the lead back at 53-49. Baltimore responded with a seven-
yard Carden-to-Williams touchdown toss to pull ahead 56-53 though, only to see a one-yard Jeramie Richardson touchdown run pull
the visitors back in front 59-56. The Brigade ultimately had the last laugh, however, as a 54-yard Kendel Thompkins kick return
touchdown was the difference in a 63-60 Baltimore win

Personnel in 2010 and 2011. Selesky spent the 2015 season as a U.S. scout for the
Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League.
Selesky was named the AFL’s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014 after helping lead the
Gladiators to a historic 17-1 regular season, an American Conference Championship and a
trip to ArenaBowl XXVII. During that run, Selesky commanded a defense, nicknamed the
"No Fly Zone," that allowed a mere 43.4 points per game, the third-fewest in the AFL that
season, and recovered a league-high 17 fumbles en route to the AFL’s third-best turnover
margin (+16).
Prior to joining Cleveland, Selesky was the Defensive Coordinator/Director of Player Personnel for the Grand Rapids
Rampage in 2008, helping the team advance to the American Conference Championship after a five year playoff
drought.. He boasts several years of Arena Football experience at both head coaching and assistant coaching positions.
He returned to the AFL in 2008 season after serving two years (2006-07) as head coach of arenafootball2’s Alabama
Steeldogs.
Selesky began his Arena Football coaching career as the director of player personnel and assistant coach for the AFL’s
Tampa Bay Storm from 1997-99, helping to lead the team to a 31-11 regular-season record and a 1998 ArenaBowl
appearance. Selesky spent the 2000 season as director of player personnel/line coach for the expansion Carolina
Cobras.
He then took his first head coaching position with the af2’s Louisville Fire in 2001 and, the following year, earned af2
Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Albany Conquest to a 13-3 regular-season mark and a Northeast Division
title.
Upon returning to the AFL in 2003, Selesky led the Buffalo Destroyers as their head coach and director of football
operations for one season before the team relocated to Columbus, Ohio. He then joined the Carolina Cobras in 2004,
serving as the team’s defensive coordinator before taking the reins as an interim head coach for the team’s final six
games. Selesky rejoined the Columbus Destroyers in 2005, serving as defensive coordinator for one year before
returning to the af2 and the Steeldogs.

at North Central College.
Selesky went on to play in two games for the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings in 1987, and attended training camps with the
