It is difficult to believe that we will be celebrating Rabbi Josh Bennett’s 25th Anniversary here at Temple Israel on the weekend of June 26th. I cannot help but think back to the young Josh Bennett. You see, Rabbi Josh has always been talented and charismatic, energetic and gregarious, creative, hard-working and fun, which are wonderful characteristics to have, especially in a youth rabbi, a role that he filled so ably for so many years. But if you knew the young Josh Bennett at all, you know that he could also be a bit impulsive. Filled with ardor for a new idea, he would stand up and announce a program that may have been idealistic, but also impossible to achieve. On the High Holy Days, he would elicit from his co-prayer leader a word that he would then have to insert haphazardly into his carefully prepared sermon. With the energy and enthusiasm of youth, he would sometimes lead with his chin and, although it was a very handsome chin, that may not always have been the safest way to enter the ring.
So, by now, I bet you are thinking that my theme is that, as he has grown older and wiser, he has also grown less impulsive. Chas v’chalilah! That is what we love about him! Thank goodness, he is just as impulsive as ever. However, one cannot help but appreciate how artfully he has learned to harness and channel those idealistic impulses in order to actualize even the most impossible of goals. It is the increasing power behind the impulse that is truly impressive.
For example, when Josh was finally ready to give up his youth rabbi mantle, I asked him what he would turn his energies towards and gently suggested that social action might be an area that could use

his leadership. Well, our Rabbi Bennett took up that challenge with a determination that was extraordinary. Suddenly, we created and spun off Project Healthy Community, established a bi-weekly food pantry right here in our building and instituted “Do Good Date Nights.” And when I say “we,” I mean “he,” along with the hundreds of volunteers he inspired to follow his most noble impulses.
Clearly though, we cannot speak of Josh’s accomplishments without including Meg. She was, after all, the one who created Judaism’s first ever PowerPoint Prayer book, along with many other transformational innovations here at temple…. usually from behind the scenes. Those interactions have led me to believe that she is responsible in no small part for the harnessing of her husband’s amazing vision. She is a steadying hand and a loving “ezer k’negdo,” which is often translated as “help-mate” but actually means a spouse who helps her husband by counterbalancing and complementing him in constructive and important ways. That is the relationship between Josh and Meg, and it is a relationship for which we are all very grateful.
As we are grateful for the leadership that his three beautiful children, Madison, Zachary and Jacob have brought to our youth program and our congregation.
Which leads me to offer up a prayer of thanks that the Bennett family has been part of our temple family for the past quarter century, and that Rabbi Josh Bennett is not only our friend, but also our charismatic, wise, energetic, creative, loving and impulsive rabbi.

It was honor to serve as President of Temple Israel Sisterhood this past year. We have had many successful programs and events for you to enjoy. When we were no longer able to safely gather together, we met the challenge and provided virtual programs for everyone to enjoy. We have an
amazing task force to keep Sisterhood strong. We will continue to provide exciting programs as we adjust to our new norm.
I would like to thank our Executive Board, General Board, Sisterhood members at large, Temple family and our entire community for all your support and hard work. It has been an incredible experience being able to work with so many committed and dynamic individuals. We could not have had this year’s success without you.
Temple Israel Sisterhood is proud to announce the following gifts: • $23,000 to the new Sisterhood “Fruit of Our Hands” Educational Greenhouse, currently under development at Temple Israel. This donation brings our total contributions to $66,000 toward our $250,000 pledge. • $4,760 to Women of Reform Judaism YES Fund (Youth, Education & Special Projects) qualifying our Sisterhood for the WRJ Roll of Special Merit.
These gifts are in addition to the many services and items donated throughout the year, including Prayer Books for Bar/Bat Mitzvah students, school and camp scholarships, Chanukah candles and hamentashen for our Religious School and Early Childhood Center students and more.
