Joshua 24 A VETERAN SPEAKS

Many nations observe a day each year to honor their military veterans. Such days feature expressions of appreciation to the men and women who have placed themselves in harm's way in defense of the nation. Societies deem it important that the next generation learn to acknowledge and appreciate the sacrifices that veterans have made on their behalf.

In this week's lesson from the final chapter of the book of Joshua, Joshua presents to the nation of Israel what amounts to his farewell address. By this time, Joshua was an old man and a true “veteran” whose career included a host of experiences, serving first as Moses' apprentice and then leading the Israelites in the conquest of the promised land. It was important, before Joshua's death, that the next generation hear his testimony and learn to appreciate the wisdom that he had to offer God's people.

Come early to hear our own Fretta Moore bless us with her piano mastery of the hymns at 9:15am. Tracy Wilson will lead this lesson.

The MAYO CLINIC: FAITH, HOPE, SCIENCE

Directed by Ken Burns

This film tells the unlikely actual story of the world-famous medical center, born in the Minnesota farmlands in the 1880s, when a 53-year-old Franciscan nun and a 64-year old agnostic country doctor came together in the wake of a deadly cyclone to make a hospital. We follow the birth and growth of the clinic alongside the progress of the Mayos themselves – founding father W.W. and his sons and successors Charlie and Will – whose lives were for all intents and purposes identical with the institution. So too was that of founding Mother Alfred Moes of the Sisters of St. Francis, whose original vision — in the religious sense — the hospital was.

REDBUD

“Here we come a-caroling!” What better way to celebrate the Advent Season than

speaker Jimette McLean’s sharing of Christmas stories—past, present, and future! What is your favorite Carol? Do you think we all could sing through the WHOLE “Twelves Days of Christmas”? The word ‘Carol’ actually means dance or a song of praise and joy. Our familiar carols come from many countries, cultures, and sung in many languages. The origins of Christmas songs dates back to around the 4th century AD when some of the Latin Christian hymns were written out and evolved into songs we recognize and sing today. Come and bring neighbors, friends, and guests early for coffee and treats!

IL CHRISTMAS PARTY

WITH ENTERTAINMENT BY THE ‘TINKER BAND’

TUESDAY, DECEMBER 18TH

7:00 PM

GRAND BALLROOM

All Independent Living Residents are invited to come and join their friends and neighbors for a fun filled evening of holiday cheer featuring the ’Tinker Band’ in the Grand Ballroom. If you have heard the band before you know how good they are. There will also be snacks and punch

for everyone to enjoy.

As added fun that night there will be a Holiday Photo Booth for residents who would like to have their picture taken with fun props!

Thanks to all Epworth Villa Resident Grandfriends, 8 very full garbage bags of empty tissue and paper towel rolls were recently delivered to Deer Creek Intermediate School where they will be used in a

science project toward the end of the school year. The students are required to build a ’roller coaster’ using our recycled donations. The more rolls available the more complex the project becomes.

So please continue to place your ’contributions’ in the marked hamper located in the Garage next to the Redbud.

Grandfriends offers us the opportunity to experience communication and interaction with children throughout the community, without ’hands-on’ activities. However, there are 71 children enrolled in the Early Childhood Program at Quail Springs UMC next door that look forward to intergenerational action with their neighbors who live in the ’BIG House’ next door to them.

Our schedules can be adjusted, so please contact Nancie W. (405-748-6554) in #383 if you would like to participate without making a weekly commitment. You will be blessed by these little people.

THANKS to everyone who contributed to the Holiday Gift Fund. The final total received was $86,824 and we had 91% participation from Independent Living residents with 36 participating from the higher levels of care. The employees will receive this gift on December 14.

If you are among the 9% who did not participate in the fund drive and would like to express your thoughts you may do so confidentially by calling me at 623-3759, or anonymously by placing a note in my box #284.
