Shaping Rur al Missour i Gr ants Developing a thriving rural Missouri is one of FCS Financial’s values. The Shaping Rural Missouri grant program offers local 4-H and FFA organizations $500 grants to implement projects that will benefit their rural communities. Funds will be awarded to assist club or chapter members in bringing positive change by establishing projects that make their local communities better places to live. FCS Financial encourages applicants to collaborate with other community organizations to develop and com-plete their improvement project.

Each proposal will be reviewed and scored by a grant review team. Award winning applicants will be notified of their award and contacted by a local FCS Financial representative to schedule a check presentation and photo opportunity. Applications are due April 1, 2017 and projects must be completed by December 31, 2017. For more information go to https://www.myfcsfinancial.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/2015-SR-MO-Grant-Application.pdf

Public Speaking Academy The 4-H Public Speaking Academy is preparing for its sixth year! Ex-tension faculty, along with 4-H volunteers and college professors will provide educational workshops to help youth build their skills and com-fort with public speaking. Participants will be guided through the ba-sics and finer points of writing and delivering a speech. Youth will re-ceive individual assistance. The camp is open to all youth 11-13 years of age interested in learning more about public speaking.

The Academy will be held June 21-22, 2017 and registration is due May 16. Lodging will be provided on the campus of Central Methodist Uni-versity in Fayette, Mo.

For more information, contact Patty Fisher at [email protected] or 573-324-5464 and be sure to download the brochure on the Missouri 4-H page at http://4h.missouri.edu/public-speaking-academy/main.

This is a GREAT opportunity to ‘make the best better~!

Opportuni ty to Host Exchange Students Missouri will be hosting 12 Japanese exchange students (12-15 years) from late July through mid-August. Applications for serv-ing as a host family can be found on the website under Global Education -https://www.states4hexchange.org/apply/host/ The requirements are that you have a host sibling within 2 years the age of the Japanese delegate and same gender. They must have their own bed (can share a room). We prefer that they have a USA family experience rather than ‘vacation/travel’ experience – just what your family would be doing at home during the time they are here. Their English skills are limited but there are many ways to communicate other than just verbal. For older 4-H members, we have the Academic Year Long exchange – these students arrive in late July/Early August from Japan, Korea and Eurasian countries to enroll as a Junior in our public high schools. Their English skills are very good and they are mo-tivated to be a good ambassador for their country. Contact Joyce Taylor if you would like more details on this opportunity.

2017 Missour i 4 -H Equine Tour Cowboy Up! The 2017 Equine 4-H tour, May 22-28, is headed to Oklahoma and Texas exploring the western eq-uine world for teens dreaming of an equine related career or aspiring to learn more about the horse world. Each year’s tour has a unique itinerary to help youth explore the diverse equine industry indigenous to the destinations. The 2017 will have a focus on the western performance and rodeo industry with visits to leading medical facilities, tours of top performance quarter horse ranches including the Lazy E, the Remington Horse Racing Track, the Cow-boy Hall of Fame, and Fort Worth Stockyards. Visits to higher education institutions such as Northeastern Oklaho-ma College and Oklahoma State University, will be included with additional opportunities to meet nationally recog-nized leaders and trainers in the western equine industry.

Nicole Bricker, Equine Tour Alum and second year MU Veterinary School student, reflected upon her experiences: “I really enjoyed going on the equine tour each year to learn about the horse industry across the state of Missouri as well as several other Midwestern states. The trips are a fun and exciting way to learn more about the horse indus-try, the many different disciplines, and equine business sectors. The MO 4-H Equine trip was one of my absolute favorite state level activities.”

Ashley Bauer, 2013 Missouri State Fair Queen, Graduate Student Equine Studies William Woods University and 4-H Equine Tour Alum summarized her feelings about the tour’s value: “The 4-H Equine Tour opened my eyes to all that the equestrian industry truly has to offer. Not only did I make lifelong friends, I made connections throughout the nation with potential employers and experienced various equestrian opportunities.”

The $600 tour fee includes charter bus transportation, tours, hotels, most meals, tour t-shirt, travel bag and other associated costs. Applications are available: http://4h.missouri.edu/equine-tour/equineregist

The fifty tour seats typically fill prior to the March 1 deadline. To avoid disappointment, submit complete applica-tion packet early! Questions? Debbie Davis, [email protected] or 816-539-3765.

New - Mini-grant Opportunity Focused on Creating Pollinator Habitat

Through a partnership with GROWMARK cooperative, Missouri 4-H is able to offer a mini-grant opportunity focusing on the creation of pollinator habitat. Honeybees and other pollinators play an important role in the agricultural ecosystem. These same pollinators are under stress from a number of factors: pests, disease, lack of habitat, and more.

Your club can do its part to help sustain and increase Monarch and honeybee populations by participating in the GROWMARK Pollinator Program to promote pollinator health!

For more information, please visit http://4h.missouri.edu/ monarchs/main.

The online application (www.bit.ly/20174hpollinator) is due by March 31, 2017.

Clover Kid Corner

Through Clover Kids clubs, children learn how to get along, share, and work in groups, ex-

plore their interests, and build self-confidence. Each Clover Kids Corner provides an activi-

ty, information or other materials that Clover Kids leaders can use in planning and imple-

menting experiences that introduce five to seven-year olds to the 4-H experience.

Crazy Crayons

When heat is applied to a crayon, it begins to melt. When crayons are chopped into small pieces and baked, kids are able to combine different colors to make their own crazy color combinations. Supplies Needed A knife Crayons (a good way to get rid of old pieces of crayon) Mini-cake tins or any type of mold that come in different designs Steps 1. Parents or leaders can chop up the crayons into small pieces (pea-sized). The crayons can be kept in separate colors so the kids can mix the colors by themselves. 2. Preheat the oven to 150˚. 3. The kids can mix the different colors of crayons and place them in the design they want by arranging them in the tin. 4. Bake until the waxes have melted, about 15 to 20 minutes. 5. After the wax has cooled, the shapes can be removed from the mold. If the crayon doesn’t come out, stick the tray in the freezer for an hour and the crayons will release. 6. Now it is time to draw a picture with your brand new crayons!

4-H Move Across Missouri (MOVE)

MOVE is back for 2017! And, youth and adults can register for it on 4HOnline!! Enrollment for new and re-enrollment for current MOVErs begins now and continues until May 1 (please make sure to register by May 1 so you can participate in the competition!). As you know, MOVE promotes physical activity and encourages youths to engage in a broad range of activities such as walking, biking, running, swimming, dance, taekwondo, gardening and more.

Here’s what youth and adults need to do to participate:

Enroll in the Move Across Missouri (MOVE) project (HF775) in 4HOnline in their profile. Enrollment in 4-H MOVE does not count as a part of county limits on projects.

Using a paper tracking system found on the 4-H website at: http://4h.missouri.edu/4hmove/moveinfo, youth and their families can “log” the number of minutes they accumulate throughout the year and during the competitive component of the MOVE program (scroll to the bottom of the website page and click “My Move Activity Log”). Record keeping through the paper tracking system is important because the competition period will be from February 1 to April 30. Youth and families will submit their total number of minutes logged and activities (basketball, running, chores, etc.) throughout the 12-week competitive period between May 1 - 15 in 4HOnline.

4-Hers and adults can register for the competitive event as individuals and/or as part of a team. An individual MOV-Er may also be a part of a team. A team can consist of a family or members of a 4-H club or group. MOVE awards will be provided.

For more information about 4-H MOVE visit - http://4h.missouri.edu/4hmove/main

Silver Spurs dispaying Valentine's Cards and some of the items for our military boxes to send to troops.

The Little Rascals Clover Kids Club met February 7 at Mid-America Therapy in Versailles. Fifteen youth said the pledges and answered the roll call-"How can we show someone we care about them?" February events were noted, including Landri Hall's birthday on the second. Alex Cororna and Gage Pryor reported on Eagle Days and Hattie Marriott reported on the Regional Energizer. Members need to sign up for work dates at the Royal Theatre and to complete forms, listing daily physical exercise, for the Move Across Missouri project. It was announced that demonstrations to be done on the county level will be performed from 6-7 pm on April 11 or June 8 and that Lego day at the county library will be held, Feb. 11 at 10:30 am. Valentines were made for Les in Eldon. Landri Hall recited the nurse-ry rhyme -"Pease Porridge." Demonstrations were given by: 1) Gage Pryor on how to fold a blanket; 2) Weston Holem on how to fix a breakfast pancake; 3) Noah Steenrod on how to play Yahtzee and 4) Trinity Jefferies on making a musical instrument with straws. Christopher Walls presented a judging class on "spoons for soup." Miss Jackie also had a judging class on "treats packed for a hike." To continue our journey to be healthier, we need to eat more fruits and vegetables. Members were asked to complete a page of fruit pictures and one of vegetable pictures for next month. Soda tabs and plastic bags were collected. Valentines were dis-tributed and refreshments served. The next meeting will be March 7.
