#4HGrowsHere Carlisle County 4-H by the Numbers

2017-18 Year-End Summary

4-H is the youth development component of Extension that provides non-formal education opportunities for young people in Carlisle County. According to the 2010 census, Carlisle County has a population of 5,104. Of those, 629 are youth ages 9-18 which is the primary audience for 4-H, and 829 are youth are ages 5-18. This year, Carlisle County 4-H and youth Extension programs involved 506 individual youth. Many youth participate in 4-H in more than one way, resulting in 920 program enrollments, meaning that on average, youth en-rolled in Carlisle County 4-H participated in two different 4-H programs totaling a minimum of 12 hours of educational engagement.

Youth can opt into 4-H through a variety of methods. Each county strives to offer multiple ways to opt in. Being a member of a 4-H Club is often the most valuable experience. It offers youth the opportunity to learn lead-ership skills, practice parliamentary procedure, interact with multiple 4-H leaders who guide and mentor youth. Members select one or more “projects”—topics of special interest to them. They get their hands and mind engaged in learning the skills and facts related to the project. Members devel-op public speaking skills as they participate in meetings, teach younger members or participate in competition. Making the community a better place to live through service, citizenship, and ac-ceptance is an important part of 4-H.

The community club typically meets after school or on weekends throughout the year at a public lo-cation. Carlisle County has 133 youth involved in this way. Youth tend to be a variety of ages. Older youth often help younger members learn and understand. Clubs which meet during school hours gen-erally focus on leadership skills. Once learned, these leadership skills are valuable assets throughout life. Carlisle County has 24 youth involved in this way. Carlisle County Extension Service also provid-ed educational programming for 17 youth in an afterschool club format, for a total of 174 youth en-rolled in 4-H clubs.

Another way to join 4-H is through special interest or short term involvement. A young person may have an interest in a specific project—such as sewing, weather, public speaking. These groups do not elect officers. The group may meet 6 or more times in a short span of time and then disband. This method of opting into 4-H also includes workshops, conferences, Clover College, and more. Carlisle County has 194 youth involved in this way.

Kentucky has a rich heritage of involving youth in camp. Kentucky 4-H has four resident camps—North Central at Carlisle, West Kentucky at Dawson Springs, Lake Cumberland at Nan-cy and Feltner at London. In 2017, 50 youth including campers and teen leaders from Carlisle County spent at least one night at one of the 4-H Camps. Day camps, usually held in local parks, are a popular way for youth to learn about the environment. Carlisle County has 36 youth involved in this way.

In 2017-18, 4-H and the SNAP-Ed education program together with the STARS Center, and other community partners provided school enrichment programs to 437 youth (youth enrolled in more than one school enrichment program were counted more than once). Programs included Reality Store, Truth & Consequences, Fun Flex, Ag Day, LEAP, Germbusters, Professor Popcorn, and Jump into Foods and Fitness. Individual youth also have the opportunity to work on a 4-H project with parents, grandparents or adult neighbors serving as mentors. In 2016-2017, 29 youth joined 4-H as individual members. Last but not least, Carlisle County 4-H could not reach so many youth without the help of fantastic volunteers. This year, 110 adult volunteers and 22 teen volunteers provided leadership in Carlisle County 4-H programs. Thank you 4-H members, volunteers, parents, community partners, and sup-porters for a great year!

Youth Learn to Lead in 4-H!

Exciting things happening in Cloverville! The Kentucky State Fair is just around the corner, and we

are so excited about the changes happening in Cloverville, Ken-tucky 4-H’s village-like area.

Cloverville is moving to the South Wing of the Kentucky Exposition Center to be a part of the fair’s newly created AgLand, which highlights Kentucky’s agricultural heritage. As part of the move, Cloverville is getting an exciting new look, including streets named for the four H’s in 4-H (Head, Heart, Hands and Health). These streets will help you navigate through the exhibit.

Of course, Cloverville would not be the showcase that it is without projects from 4-H’ers in all 120 counties. Cloverville provides Kentucky 4-H with a fabulous opportunity to show-case the immense talent, hard work and dedication of these

young Kentuckians. The state fair is the culminating event for these Kentucky 4-H projects that are vying for one more blue ribbon. These projects are already winners, having advanced through their county, and sometimes regional, contests to get to this point. They truly do represent the best of Kentucky.

In addition to the projects, Cloverville is home to live showcases and hands-on contests that allow 4-H members to display their natural talents and abilities and to entertain fair-goers. Different events occur each day. To see the Cloverville schedule, visit https://4-h.ca.uky.edu/2018-state-fair-schedule-and-general-rules.

The Kentucky State Fair is Aug. 16-26 in Louisville. More information on Cloverville is available at the Carlisle County Extension office.

For many young people, leadership training starts as soon as they join 4-H. Here, youth learn responsibility as they care for animals, gain confidence with public speaking, understand the feeling of success as they complete projects and learn to interact with their peers as they attend events or club meetings. All of these skills are critical components of becom-ing an effective leader. Many youth find these experiences en-riching to their current lives and encouraging as they enter adulthood.

As youth grow in 4-H, they have the chance to take on further leadership roles. They may lead a club at the county level, become a delegate to state-level events and may even advance as a state teen council member or decide to run for state 4-H office as a senior 4-H member.

State Teen Council gives young leaders the opportunity to refine their communication and leadership skills and it serves as a sounding board for 4-H state teen programming. Members also assist with the planning and execution of two leadership building events, 4-H Summit and Teen Conference. The State Teen Council engages in an educational program such as mock interviews, resumes, demonstrations and speeches. Teens also develop leadership workshops to take back to their county and

districts. Council members are chosen by their Cooperative Extension district and serve two-year terms.

State officers are senior 4-H’ers who serve as 4-H ambas-sadors to the state and are elected at 4-H Teen Conference each June. These officers have many responsibilities including planning meetings, chairing committees, leading trainings, pre-siding over State Teen Council, and representing Kentucky 4-H throughout the state.

2018-2019 4-H state officers are: President: Jonna Woodson, Muhlenberg County Vice President: Walter Steely, Webster County Secretary: Delaney Simpson, Boyle County Treasurer: Dylan Gentry, Green County For more information about 4-H leadership opportunities,

contact the Carlisle County Cooperative Extension Service. Educational programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Exten-

sion Service serve all people regardless of economic or social status and will not discriminate on the basis of race, color, eth-nic origin, national origin, creed, religion, political belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, preg-nancy, marital status, genetic information, age, veteran status, or physical or mental disability.

2018 4-H Camp Carlisle County sent 38 campers, 7

adult volunteers, and 3 agents to West Kentucky 4-H Camp this year in Daw-son Springs. This year’s theme was 4-

H’ers of the Galaxy with a space theme. Carlisle County camped with

Ballard, Marshall, Fulton, Daviess, and Graves counties. It was a fantastic

week and we are already looking for-ward to next year!

A HUGE THANK YOU to the following volunteers for coming with us to camp this year!: Kelly Laird, Clifton Turner, Aaron Ellegood, Michelle Laird, Michelle

Blythe, Amanda McGary, and Mehl Terry. We couldn’t do it without you!

4-H Camp is a great opportunity for 4-H’ers aged 9-15 to learn new

things, develop leadership skills, and make lasting friendships. Exciting

tracks offered this year included ca-noeing, swimming, archery, rifle,

ropes, horse, and more. Campers at-tend dances, sing songs, watch skits,

and enjoy free recreation time. Some campers take classes while at camp

that allow them to make projects they can enter in the county fair.

2018 4-H Teen Conference Carlisle County 4-H sent four delegates

and one volunteer to Teen Conference at the beginning of June. Teen Conference is for senior 4-H’ers and is held at the Uni-

versity of Kentucky. Delegates stay in the dorms, eat on campus, attend tracks, and get to experience college life. Dances, ses-sions, and socials allow youth to meet oth-

ers from across the state, and the next year’s state 4-H officers are elected.

Honors & Achievements At Teen Conference, Carlisle County 4-H’ers were rec-ognized for their achievements throughout the year. Catherine Drysdale was recognized for winning the

Emerald award (the highest honor in Kentucky 4-H!), serving on the State Teen Council this year, and run-

ning for State Vice President. Laiken Ellegood was recognized for being selected to serve on the 2018-19 State Shooting Sports Ambassador Board. Awesome job to all of our 4-H’ers! We are very proud of you!

Thank you Tracy Ellegood for attending with our youth!
