April 18-24 National Volunteer Week is here. This special week offers opportunities to thank some of America’s most valuable assets — our volunteers — and to recognize the myriad of ways they improve our communities. National Volunteer Week reflects the power that volunteers have to "inspire by example" — volunteers both encourage those they help and motivate others to serve! Ways to celebrate may be found at: http://www.pointsoflight.org/signature-events/national-volunteer-week. Thank you to our Dickinson County 4-H volunteers! Thank You Hayley and Cheryl! Wednesday, April 21 (office professional’s day) is the date designated this year to let Hayley and Cheryl know how much we appreciate the work they do in the Extension Office. Hayley is working hard to learn everything she can about Dickinson County 4-H and Cheryl handles all of our 4-H financials from the Marion County office. Visual Arts Kansas State Fair Project Changes This year, all visual arts exhibits will be judged competitively at the KSF. Projects exhibited must be an original design created by the exhibitor. Pages 49 – 50 of the Kansas State Fair 4-H Exhibitor Handbook provides more details concerning copyright and original design. Additionally, Dickinson County will be allowed to submit 5 items for State Fair judging, one each in the categories of fine arts, clay/ceramics, leather/jewelry, three-dimensional, and general crafts. Food Safety of Frostings and Fillings New research has been done and resources are available as you make decisions about frostings and fillings to use with fair exhibits. Food safety is essential and not all frostings and fillings are safe to store at room temperature. Resources on this topic may be found at: https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/judging/index.html. Please note that safety calculations must be done by the exhibitor prior to judging. Our 4-H foods judges will not have time to make recipe calculations. Konley Harding Memorial Scholarship Konley was a former 4-Her and Purple Power Pack camp counselor from Morris County. His family has requested that the scholarship in his honor be made available to 4-Hers from Dickinson, Morris, and Marion Counties. The application may be found at: http://www.dickinson.k-state.edu/4-h/forms_and_applications/ and is due May 10th. DK Leadership SQUAD The next meeting will be Monday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m. Please look for an email with meeting information. All 4-Hers 6th grade and up interested in learning about and practicing leadership are invited to attend! If you are interested in being part of SQUAD, please email Shawna at [email protected]. Hope to see you there! County Committees Our county committees have been doing fabulous work! Congratulations to the 4-H Day, pizza fundraiser, basketball, and spring show committees for meeting, working together, and accomplishing great things. Committees that need to start gearing up are the Friends of 4-H, family living, and fair committees. Committee lists are posted at: https://tinyurl.com/2021dkcommittees Purple Power Pack 4-H Camp In adherence to COVID-19 protocol, our camp group is operating at 50% capacity for the summer of 2021. We had to make some tough decisions as a (5) county camp group and ultimately decided on a randomized lottery system. Those who participated in the lottery have been notified through email of their status. Camp payments and online registration is due by 5 PM on Friday, April 30th by those campers and counselors selected to attend. Dickinson County 4-H Council Date: Monday, May 24th Time: 6:45 pm – officers, 7:30 pm – full council Where: Zoomland Online Volunteer Orientation The Volunteer Orientation needs to be completed by everyone applying to be a 4-H volunteer. It only needs to be done one time. The only exception is those junior leaders who have served as camp counselors where your counselor training includes the orientation. This orientation is available through 4HOnline with directions at: https://www.kansas4-h.org/resources/4-h-online-family-resources/index.html Volunteer Screening Process Any person that works with 4-H youth needs to complete the volunteer screening process. This includes, but is not limited to, organizational leaders and project leaders. Anyone over the age of 14 that is a junior project leader or works with 4-H youth should complete the process including application, short interview, and orientation. An online background check is required for those volunteers over the age of 18. When 4-H Volunteers enroll through 4HOnline, the process will take the place of what once was the volunteer application and then reenrollment forms. Once volunteers enter their information in the system, they will simply have to reenroll each year, the same way youth currently do through 4HOnline. Instructions for enrolling as a volunteer may be found here: https://www.kansas4-h.org/resources/4-h-online-family-resources/index.html

Labels should be about 3” x 2½” in size and include exhibitor name, class number and county. For Foods items, there is a label template available for download at: http://www.kansas4-h.org/events-activities/fairs/kansas-state-fair/index.html under “Foods and Nutrition”. We have foods and food preservation labels available at the office. Reminder: Electrical Code for CKFF You may not use box fans with the 2-prong cord attached to a 3-prong adapter. Potential participants must be current high school students. Additional information and application is available at: https://www.asi.k-state.edu/research-and-extension/youth-programs/k-state-animal-science-leadership-academy/ FSA Youth Loan Program The FSA youth loan program is designed to help rural youth establish and operate an income-producing project of modest size relating to their participation in 4-H or FFA. The goal of the youth loan is to help youth develop an income-producing project that expands their knowledge of their projects and provides them with practical business knowledge. For more information see the FSA Rural Youth Loan Fact Sheet: https://www.fsa.usda.gov/programs-and-services/farm-loan-programs/youth-loans/index. Responsibilities of Parents in the 4-H Program: • Show interest in what your children are doing and give them encouragement. • Provide any materials and equipment your child may need. • Help the club and leader when asked. Don't wait to be asked, VOLUNTEER! • See that your child finishes as well as starts their project(s). Be a "shadow helper" - guide, advise, help - but let

the child do his or her own work. • Encourage your child when they succeed and even more when they fail. Encourage and reward effort and

progress, as well as the end results. Help your 4-Her be a good sport and appreciate the success of others. Support the 4-H leaders. Let the leaders know you appreciate them. Make 4-H a family affair, get the whole family involved in 4-H activities.

• Learn and support the goals and objectives of 4-H. Remember, the development of youth is the mission. • Know that you are building for the future. • Know that today's 4-H activities build the citizens and leaders of tomorrow. • Know and support the Kansas 4-H Life Skills.

Welcome BackChisholm Trail 4-H

We are all excited to hold our face-to-face meetings again. Here are a few reminders on how to keep us all safe!

Before the Meeting:

Avoid physical greetings- It is natural to want to shake each other’shands, high five, or give a touch on the shoulder, but REMEMBER- It’ssafer to give a little wave or even a nice, quick head nod.

Social distance- If we can read something our neighbor is holding, thenwe are TOO close! Please maintain a social distance of at least 6ft fromeach other to reduce any risk of transmitting COVID-19.

Practice good hygiene- Have an itch on your face? Twinkle your noselike in “Bewitched” (ask your parents!) Do your best to not touch yourface! Need to cough or sneeze? Cough or sneeze into your elbow butremember not to “elbow bump” with that same elbow to greet someone.

Be wise: Sanitize- Washing hands with soap and water is the best way toget rid of germs, but in case you can’t find a sink- we have you covered! We will have sanitizing bottles available for your convenience.

Stay on task- Let's keep our agenda goals inmind so we can make needed decisions, learn, have fun together, and make it home safe.

During the Meeting:

Disinfect surfaces- Don’t disappear too quickly! We will need to disinfectour chair and table area prior to leaving.

Avoid physical greetings- Give a little wave or head nod again on yourway out.

Wash your hands- You have heard this often, but repetition is good forthe mind! Make sure to wash your hands again when you get home.

After the Meeting:

Speak loudly- Don't be afraid to let your voicebe heard. Those in the room and on ZOOM needto hear you!

Fun and games- Recreation helps us get toknow each other. Choose games that don'trequire shared equipment or contact!

Snack wisely- Pre-packaged is the way to go!
