Introduction:

The WASP Club & Coach Development Event is pleased to provide you with a varied programme packed with practical and

interactive workshops to continue your journey into coaching excellence. The development of new skills, sharing of ideas,

techniques and practical solutions are key for any coach to develop and deliver high quality sessions to support the

improvement of athletes and players at all levels.

We are pleased to introduce to you a renowned team of presenters and tutors from across the sporting spectrum whose expertise & knowledge will be sure to both inspire and motivate you.

The details in this brochure will provide you with the workshop outline and what you can expect to gain from each of the workshops. Key Note Address, Dan Hunt (Friday only) Great Britain's Senior National Endurance Coach and Race Coach/ Directeur Sportif for Team Sky Pro-Cycling Having completed an MSc in Exercise Science Dan started work at the University of Bath as assistant sports scientist. Within 2 years Dan was appointed senior physiologist at a National Institute of Sport. In 2005 Dan was contacted by the Great Britain Cycling Team to transform the then failing Women’s Endurance Team. Through Dan’s enthusiasm, leadership, vision, and shared British Cycling values and philosophies, he led the transformation of a failing programme into one that produced 4 Olympic Medals in just two and a half years.

The Sport Makers programme, funded by the National Lottery, will

recruit tens of thousands of new sports volunteers aged 16 and

over to organise, support and lead community sporting activities

across the country.

Whether it’s planning the route, finding the pitch or encouraging

people to take part, sport doesn’t just happen, it needs people like

you to make it happen.

Become one of 40,000 Sport Makers and you’ll not only get the skills, knowledge and opportunities you

need to get more people playing sport, you’ll become part of the official London 2012 Olympic and

Paralympic sports legacy.

The First Steps into Coaching workshop will provide you with the

information you need in order to take your first steps to become a sports

coach. We'll look at the skills and knowledge you will develop, what to

expect in your first weeks, how you can solve problems you may come

across, and finally, we will tell you what support we and other

organisations can provide as you take your first steps into coaching as a

coach’s helper.

If you book onto both the Sport Makers and First Steps into Coaching Workshops this will be FREE of

charge (A buffet is also provided)

If you wish to attend just the Sport Maker workshop this will be FREE to attend.

If you wish to attend just the First Steps into Coaching Workshop this will cost £5 and will include a

Resource for you to take home.

WORKSHOPS – Friday 26th October AM and PM

Dan Hunt – information and Q&A session (AM session) This workshop will give you the opportunity to hear more from Dan and learn from his coaching career. A question & answer session will also be available.

1st Aid - Emergency First Response Primary Care (AM session) Essential for all coaches both new and existing. This first aid course will cover specific sporting injuries related to the sport of

the coaches on the course including: what is first aid, the aims of first aid, becoming aware of an incident, action in an

emergency, primary assessment, secondary assessment, principles of resuscitation, and AED use. The minimum age to

attend this course is 16 years of age, and the qualification is valid for 2 years.

RFU Rugby Ready (AM session) This workshop will be delivered outside on the field, please come prepared for all weather conditions.

Everybody involved in coaching, refereeing and playing rugby needs a sense of safe practice. The IRB Rugby Ready

programme is intended to raise awareness of good practice and help stakeholders manage the inherent risks of the sport by

putting appropriate safeguards in place. The course is practical-based, with no formal assessment, and the course is

delivered by an accredited coach educator.

At the conclusion of the course you will have gained:

An understanding of how to deliver a safe and enjoyable practical session

Knowledge of how to coach and improve contact skills & particularly the tackle

Knowledge of how to coach and improve scrummage engagement skills

Knowledge of contact skills

SCUK How to Deliver Engaging Sessions: A Guide for Developing Adults

through Sport (AM session) This workshop equips coaches with the knowledge and skills needed to grow and sustain participation

beyond the first few sessions. Coaches will learn about new participants’ needs, including how to build their self-confidence.

Ultimately, how people feel about those first few sessions will ensure they keep coming back again and again.

LTA Mini Tennis (AM session) Mini tennis is a modified game of tennis designed for players aged 10 & under. It is a fun racket sport suitable for players of all standards and abilities. The course is designed to give confidence to tennis assistants and coaches when delivering mini tennis in schools or to a mixed ability group in a small space. At the conclusion of the course you will have gained:

An understanding of how to deliver a safe and enjoyable mini tennis session to a mixed ability group in a small space

An ability to plan and ensure that players have the opportunity to develop both technically and tactically

Knowledge of the rules of red, orange and green mini tennis and the various competition formats

UK Dodgeball Level 2 (not UKCC) (All day session)

This is an 8 hour workshop that will run alongside the Club & Coach Development Event. Lunch will be included.

The workshop will take you through 4 modules listed below and will finish with an assessment.

MODULE 1: health and safety, rules, warm ups, tournament games, officiating – refresher for level 1/new candidates

MODULE 2: conditioning games, reviewing, adapting and creating

MODULE 3: advanced techniques, tactics, use of questioning

MODULE 4: planning, progression, differentiation, objectives

ASSESMENT: Plan and deliver a part of a session

This workshop costs £125 per person to attend, including course, assessment fees, lunch, and a Club & Coach

Development Event goody bag.

SCUK An Introduction to the FUNdamentals of Movement (PM session) You’ll come away from this workshop with a thorough grounding in the concepts of agility, balance and coordination as well as the importance of play, fun and enjoyment in sport. Among other skills, you will learn to:

fine-tune your observational and analytical skills to coach good movement patterns – whether for a specific sport or in multi-skill sessions

help your youngsters to master the fundamental techniques of movement – from stability to rhythm and from acceleration to jumping and kicking

Strength, Conditioning & Nutrition in Sport (PM session) The workshop has both practical and theoretical components and will include: recommendations for strength and

conditioning programming, age specific recommendations for exercise, execution of basic exercises and how to use portable

exercise equipment creatively. An introduction to sports nutrition will also be covered.

RFU Start Coaching Tag Rugby (PM session)

This workshop will be delivered outside on the field, please come prepared for all weather conditions

Tag Rugby is a fast-moving, non-contact invasion game suitable for boys and girls to play together. The key to the game is

enjoyment, with running and handling skills to the fore. The course is practical-based, with no formal assessment, and the

course is delivered by an accredited coach educator.

The course is delivered through a game sense approach, and is accompanied by a supporting DVD. At the conclusion of the

course you will have gained:

An understanding of how to deliver a safe and enjoyable practical session

Knowledge of how to coach and improve skills through games

An understanding of the application of a game sense approach

Knowledge of the rules of tag rugby

The ability to apply of the rules of tag rugby (refereeing)

SCUK Developing Talent – The role of the coach from the frontline (PM session) The workshop will focus on the application of the generic learning outcomes and key messages around

a specific topic related to their “role” as a Talent Development coach.

Key areas covered will include:

An exploration of some of the key themes surrounding the development of talent taking information

from a number of key texts and research documents which can then be practically applied within the coaching environment.

Identification of some of the key capabilities of the talented athlete that are common to all sports and identify areas for the

coaches to develop to enhance their skills and knowledge and make themselves more effective in their role.

SCUK Safeguarding & Protecting Children (PM session) Essential for all coaches and volunteers who have regular contact with children & young people. This

workshop focuses on the essential good practices to protect the child and the coach. Protect yourself,

the young people you are coaching and your employer by understanding and following good coaching

practice. Learn about child abuse and how to handle situations if you have concerns. This is a

prerequisite for any NGB coaching qualification and you will receive a nationally recognised certificate.

WORKSHOPS – Saturday 27th October AM and PM

Inclusive Coaching: Disability (AM session) Improve your ability to coach sport for disabled people by becoming a more inclusive coach. Attend this workshop and gain the knowledge and skills that will enhance your current coaching skills so that your practice can be more inclusive. The workshop will provide you with information on the Inclusion Spectrum through practical examples, provide you with adaption techniques and the STEPS principle through coach led activities.

SCUK A Guide to Mentoring Sports Coaches (AM session) Mentoring is a powerful tool in the education and development of sports coaches at all levels. If you’re interested in developing your skills in the area of mentoring other coaches, then this workshop is for you. You‘ll Learn:

all the tools you need to develop your profile to the next level

how to design a mentoring programme that will support your coaches’ learning

to increase the effectiveness of your mentoring relationship

Talking Sport Seminar – Club & Professional Development (AM session) Delivered by expert ‘Talking Sport’ tutors from Sport England’s new Community Sports Development programme this seminar will cover three key topics of professional and club development meaning you get 3 workshops in one! The topics that will be covered are:

Planning your Clubs Future – how to plan your future and become sustainable

Reducing the Burden – the art of delegation

Effective Communication – how to communicate with different types of members

ECB Cricket for Teachers (AM session) This workshop is aimed at primary school teachers to support them in the benefits of providing games for understanding. The overview is to introduce teachers to the power and versatility of the new ECB Howzat CD ROM resource, which all candidates will receive a copy of. The workshop aims to give the confidence to deliver some Cricket in schools and to promote the benefits of using games for understanding. The workshop provides an introduction to scoring, umpiring and tactics involved in the running of the game. Teachers will receive an ECB qualification from this workshop.

UKA Leadership in Running Fitness (All Day session – 8.30am - 5pm)

The Leadership in Running Fitness course addresses barriers to participation in running finding ways of appealing to those not traditionally attracted to running clubs. Before signing up to the course you will need to apply for a CRB check with UK Athletics. The course covers: •Looking at barriers to running and how to overcome those barriers •How to develop a session & session components including risk assessment, safety, goals and reviewing practice •Managing your group to include all abilities •Session planning, different activities to include, importance of variety •Goal setting – How to set and use personal goals •Warming up and cooling down and correct stretching for running •Common injuries and injury prevention •Footwear – the basics •Being a leader – what’s expected of you Once qualified, you will have the skills and insurance needed to deliver fun and safe sessions to groups of runners with different abilities, including new runners and those who already run but want to progress. This is a 7.5 hour workshop that will run alongside the Club & Coach Development Event. Cost per person is £100, to include lunch and a Club & Coach Development Event goody bag.

The FA Coaching Futsal: A Beginners Guide (All Day session) You must hold a 1st4 Sport Level 1 Certificate in Coaching Football. This is a 6 hour workshop that will run alongside the Club & Coach Development Event. Cost per person is £65, to include lunch and a Club & Coach Development Event goody bag. This workshop will teach you the rules and basic principles of attack and defence. Understand how to organise and coach Futsal and appreciate the fitness demands of the game. The course will provide candidates with an understanding of the techniques and skills related to the game of Futsal. The course will help candidates organise and deliver basic Futsal practices. It will also provide candidates with an introduction to the structure of the game, the laws and the role Futsal can play in developing underlying skills and techniques.

Challenging Behaviour in PE & Sport (PM session) This workshop is designed for primary teachers of PE and sports coaches working in a school environment. The workshop has both practical and theoretical components and will include: setting up a successful and safe environment, top tips of coaching and using verbal and body language to your advantage. This session does not have all the answers, but it will give you a further insight to create a supportive coaching environment that will promote more positive behaviour.

GB Sport Business Essentials (PM session) This interactive course provides essential business and financial information for sports coaches and their clients to ensure both parties satisfy government regulations and requirements.

It will detail the requirements for the various ways coaches can be paid - self-employment, employment, casual work, volunteering with expenses - with particular focus on the strict tax self-employment guidelines that, if not satisfied, can result in a hefty tax bill for coach and client.

The workshop will outline how you can assess your relationship with your coach/client to see if it meets the guidelines without having to contact the tax office. We also outline the various types of flexible employment and casual worker options available when paying a coach, including a detailed look at the zero hours employment contract. The course will provide an overview of the tax inspection system including advice on minimising the possibility of inspection. We detail the Health and Safety and insurance requirements for coaches and clubs including a review of liability and the legal status options open to coaches and clubs.

Funding Opportunities for Coach & Club (PM Session)

This workshop will provide you with the information to be able to access different funding streams for both the coach and your club. This will include Sported., Sportivate, Community Games Year 2, Local Area Board, WASP & Wiltshire Council Coach Bursary Scheme, Sport England Small Grants and more.

Social Media for your Club (PM session) This workshop will help you to understand how to better use Facebook and Twitter to benefit your club. You will learn about:

What social media is, and why we should use it

Guidelines for the most effective and ‘safe’ methods of online communication

How to host your media content online

You should already have an awareness of what Facebook and Twitter are, and have used at least one of them on a personal level. The workshop will be a mix of discussion and hands-on practical work on the Internet. If you have a smartphone that takes photos and video, with the ability to connect to the internet, please bring it with you. Alternatively, a digital camera with connection cable would be useful.
