WELCOME TO THE 20TH ANNUAL

ROTARY HOLIDAY HOUSE TOUR

On behalf of the Rotary Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake, it is with great pride that we welcome visitors to our 20th Annual Holiday House Tour. We are pleased, once again, to have six distinctive homes and land-mark destinations all beautifully decorated for the season. As an added feature, in celebration of our 20th year, we are offering a special VIP evening event at The McArthur Estate entitled, “A Romance Wonderland.”

The Rotary Holiday House Tour has been a huge success over the years because of our generous homeowners, our talented and hard-working decorators, and hundreds of enthusiastic volunteers who have showcased the best Niagara-on-the-Lake has to offer. To date, we have raised more than $850,000, monies that have been used to make our world a better place, making a difference both locally and internationally.

This year’s Rotary Theme is “Be the Inspiration” – to effect change around the world and in each other; to look at environmental issues that affect health and welfare, here and globally; and do what we can to help. Through your continued support, each ticket sale helps to give us the means and strength to achieve these goals. To you, our faithful supporters, we say Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!!

Wishing you a Wonderful and Safe Holiday Season. We truly hope you enjoy this 20th Annual Rotary Holiday House Tour!!!

1. The Grand Victorian 15618 NIAGARA PARKWAY

The mansion is set within 1.5 acres of gardens viewed from a wide welcoming verandah. Century-old trees planted in the mid-to-late 1800s stand as a testament to time and history. This home is a spectacular Victorian Mansion with Queen Anne Revival influence and a dash of Eastlake. Architectural details include 12' ceilings with original gaslight fixtures; all original woodwork, an Oak Chippendale staircase descending into the Great Hall with original Oak ceiling; eight Walnut, Oak and Cherry fireplace mantles; and original Ponderosa Pine floors. Stained-glass windows send shards of color across polished floors. Authentic antique furniture completes an atmosphere that whispers of more gracious times. Most recently, The Grand Victorian played a substantial role in the Netflix Movie “Christmas Inheritance” starring Eliza Taylor, Andie MacDowell and Jake Lacy. A truly interesting and welcoming venue. Decorated by MORI GARDENS DESIGN AND GARDEN CENTRE, NOTLPresented by BOSLEY REAL ESTATE

HOUSE

2. King's Landing 289 RICARDO STREET

This home is all about history and location with views of Fort George from the front to Fort Niagara and the Niagara River from all windows across the back of the home, simply magnificent. John J. Wright built the home in 1908 and named it ‘King’s Landing’. It was here that he moored his steam yacht ‘Electra’ when coming from his home and offices in Toronto to his summer home in Niagara-on-the-Lake. King’s Landing is one of the best examples of a fine Tudor Revival/Arts and Crafts home in NOTL. The main floor of the home retains much of its original Tudor Revival details, including dark wood trim around doors and windows, and a staircase with a heavy carved newel post, newel cap and balustrade. The fireplace in the living room is featured in the painting “Christmas at the Cottage” by Trisha Romance.

3. Victoria House 117 VICTORIA STREET

The original Crown Grant of this Lot 9 property was to a retired Captain in 1796. The Rigby Family, in 1962, commissioned architect Robert Ian MacBeth to design a two-storey Cape Cod style home. Mr. MacBeth, the son of a prominent Scottish architect, was born in Inverness, Scotland in 1891 and died in St. Catharines in 1978. An important aspect of the architectural design was to integrate the home with the landscape of the ½ acre site. The home is noted for its use of leaded glass inside and the grand entrance hallway that showcases all the large principal rooms. The current owners added a wing in 2016, designed to fit in the context of Front Street and the Town. The renovations provide a view of the lake from the second floor and easy access to the swimming pool and garden areas.

4. The Goh Residence 165 PRIDEAUX STREET

This home was built in 2011 to resemble the original house and take into consideration the look of the historical homes in Niagara-on-the- Lake while maintaining an air of privacy, which is very important to the current owners. The inside of the home is full of amazing surprises with each room decorated with elegant Brian Gluckstein furniture brought from their previous residence, stylish light fixtures and, of particular note, the display of beautiful artwork and artifacts from the owners’ travels and living abroad. The home is designed to please the owners, from the formal living and dining rooms to the casual kitchen and living space facing the back gardens. This home is full of beauty and calm.

5. The Glass Forest House 2 PARK COURT

Built in 1995 across from The Commons, intended for a setting in the Gatineau Hills of Quebec, this home found its true destiny in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Simply stated, this sums up the beauty achieved in the modern design of this unique home in Old Town. Privately situated on a treed lot, designed with natural and organic materials, this three-bedroom home conveys European minimalism. A floating staircase is all that separates the Great Room from the Kitchen and Dining areas, as walls are for the exterior only! Light oak hardwood floors and beams, steel supports, copious windows and Corian kitchen counters complement the great outdoors. A surprise is the three stained-glass windows where the artful creations suggest the original owner’s passion for harmony with science and nature!

6. The Farmhouse at 1325 1325 EAST/WEST LINE

This 1¾-storey Dutch Colonial home was built by the current owners in 1981 with an addition in 1994, and sits on 1.3 acres surrounded by peach and pear orchards. Designed with historic Niagara architecture, wide plank pine floors, high baseboards, wood-burning fireplace and a Waterford kitchen wood stove from Ireland adds tradition. Free-standing storage has been chosen for many of the rooms; a large antique armoire in the living room, an old sports cabinet re-purposed as a pantry in the kitchen, family room built-ins, all adding warmth and versatility to each room. The little office with its built-in banquette is the perfect bird watching corner, looking out to the treed backyard. The three-season sunroom with high ceilings and skylights make this room a favourite. A mix of antiques and modern pieces keep the home practical and cosy.

VIP. The McArthur Estate 210 JOHN STREET EAST

The McArthur Estate, a beautiful, red-brick Georgian home, was built in 1929 and named The Romance Estate by its previous owner, local and world-renowned artist, Trisha Romance. Her vision is responsible for creating this romantic home, surrounded by Victorian gardens and sunlit conservatories. It is a place that perfectly captures the colourful changing of the seasons and in winter, it seems as though you are living inside a dreamy snow globe. The interior is full of elaborate and ornate moldings, and a grand staircase that is home to a magical 12-foot Christmas tree. The elegantly decorated rooms flow beautifully between one another, each with its own Christmas tree. The McArthur family, who now owns The Romance Estate, cherish and maintain her vision. It truly is the ultimate Christmas home, a romantic setting for all to stop and wonder.

8 . ANNUAL SITE: NOTL McFarland House 15927 NIAGARA PARKWAY

This historic Georgian manor home was built by John McFarland and his sons. Descendants of the McFarlands lived in the house for over 140 years before it was restored by The Niagara Parks Commission and opened to the public in 1959. During the War of 1812, both British and American forces used the home as a hospital, and in December 1813, the British attack on Fort Niagara was launched from the ravine on the property. McFarland House is one of the only structures to survive

the burning of the town when occupying American forces retreated from the area, making it one of the oldest properties in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Today, McFarland House portrays early nineteenth century life in Upper Canada. www.mcfarlandhouse.com

In addition to the permanent collection, in the fall and winter of 2018, we are hosting an exhibition by Port Colbourne artist Mary Prittie (1908-1999). A prolific and talented painter, Prittie produced many water- colour and oil paintings of local landscapes and the Welland Canal. The exhibition has been made possible by a generous loan from the artist’s family. Exhibitions of work by many of Canada’s most celebrated artists, including Tom Thomson, Cornelius Krieghoff, and members of the Group of Seven are also on display in the Georgian-style building. Visitors may also enjoy our gift shop and the grounds overlooking the Niagara River and Lewiston, NY. Through community effort, the building was restored and con- verted to a visual art centre in 1994 and offers year-round educational programs, exhibitions and events promoting interest in the visual arts. www.niagarapumphouse.ca
