Shaw Festival

George Bernard Shaw, the great Irish playwright, runs close together with Niagara-on-the-Lake from the Shaw Festival held from May to October every year in the town.

Shaw is the only person to have been awarded both a Nobel Prize in Literature (1925) and an Oscar (1938). He advocated that the art should reflect the

social problems. His mind was deeply affected by German philosophers Schopenhauer and Nietzsche.

Shaw visited China in 1933, and he met many famous Chinese intellectuals.

Prince

The Prince of Wales Hotel is a landmark in the town. It is a typical Victorian building with a long history.

Built in 1864, the three storey 110 room hotel went by several names and was renamed with the current named after famous guests the Duke of York (and Prince of Wales) and the Duchess of York in 1901.

Queen Elizabeth II stayed at the hotel during her visit to the area in 1973. Prince Charles and Princess Diana were this hotel’s guests too. One room in the hot season could be priced at CA$ 279 to 479 for one night, but it is still difficult to book.

Fort GeorgeFort George served as the

headquarters for Major-General Brock in 1812 during the war between the US and UK. In May, 1813, it was bombarded and captured by the Americans who constructed fortifications of their own on the site. The war ended at 1815, then the boundaries between the US and Canada went back to where it was to be.

In 1815, Fort George was described as “tumbling into ruins” and ordered abandoned.

↑ Barracks for Soldiers

The present works are a reconstruction done in 1937-40, and present the fort as it was in 1799-1813. Only the magazine of the original fort remains.
