A message from the President and the Chair of the Board

It has been a pleasure to watch the 2012-13 academic

year unfold and witness CMCC realise key developments

that enrich the student experience, encourage

academic and professional exchange and contribute to

the advancement of the profession through essential

research.

CMCC’s ongoing outreach program ensures that Year

IV interns have treatment experience outside of the

traditional clinical environment. Taking that approach

and marrying it with an opportunity to treat patients in

underserved areas is the philosophy behind Chiropractic

Abroad and participation in World Spine Care clinics,

each of which has become the ground for unique clinical

and overseas outreach opportunities at CMCC. Such

experiences encourage innovation, adaptability, and a

confidence in hands on treatment skills that comes from

a high degree of self reliance. They reflect and reinforce

the patient centred practice philosophy at the heart of

CMCC’s program.

While offering students advanced academic and clinical

experiences, CMCC was also pleased to welcome its third

research centre with the establishment of the UOIT-

CMCC Centre for the Study of Disability Prevention and

Rehabilitation. Housed on the CMCC Campus, the Centre

fosters collaborative research between CMCC and the

University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT), with

an eye to informing future health policy in Ontario. As

CMCC lends its facilities to the development of greater

knowledge and understanding, the addition of the Centre

facilitates academic exchange encouraged by a shared

passion for a better future through the wisdom and

respect earned through scientific investigation.

Also during this period, CMCC received its largest grant

to date through the US National Institutes of Health (NIH)

for a new approach to establish a baseline for treatment

outcomes. While CMCC has received two previous NIH

grants, an RO1 research project grant is the highest level

the NIH bestows and reaffirms CMCC’s reputation for

leadership in spinal research.

While the institution made considerable progress in its

offerings for students and increased its research capacity,

it also saw the development of a number of operational

efficiencies and innovations designed to increase savings

and enhance program delivery. Technology played an

important role in diversifying curriculum delivery through

the development of elearning pilot programs and

improvements to CMCC’s simulation laboratory. Efforts

to improve and apply new methods that enrich learning

remain an ongoing priority. Increased student satisfaction

levels, demonstrated through annual student surveys, tell

us we are headed in the right direction.

Thanks to each of you who have contributed to our

success this year. Your support has made many of the

following achievements possible and we hope that you

enjoy this overview of the year.

Outreach Abroad: Improving odds

Bringing vital chiropractic care to

underserved groups is the motivation

behind CMCC’s Outreach Abroad,

during which Drs. Pat Tavares (Class

of '95) and Les Wiltshire (Class of '79)

accompanied Year IV interns to the

Dominican Republic from April 16 to

26, 2013. The program, now entering

its third year, provides interns an

opportunity to work in disadvantaged

areas where many individuals have

had little to no exposure to modern

health care.

This year, the outreach provided care for

over 1,200 patients from rural areas.

Numerous advantages for interns

and patients.

As with last year, the interns treated

in several locations, moving daily

through their nine days away to

reach their patients.

"Students are exposed to many

different situations, must manage

a language barrier and make quick

decisions as to how they can best

help. Working with no modalities,

they are called upon to change their

perspectives and find a way to help

their patients using their hands

alone. It’s a great experience for

everyone," says Wiltshire. "Every

year I see the interns grow through

having seen textbook cases come to

life and from having learned to work

quickly and effectively with only

their minds and hands."

Participating in the outreach

was a long time goal for Jessica

Sommerfeld, who wanted to

participate in an outreach of this

nature since she was a child. She

reiterated the observation that "it

was proof of the power of adjusting.

There were no modalities, but

we were able to accomplish a

great deal." According to Tavares,

the interns are exposed to many

situations they would not see in

practice in North America including

brain injuries, strokes, Parkinson's

and myelitis. They treated one day

at a school where they saw many

paediatric cases.

Life changing benefits

Intern Tammy Yuen recalled seeing

a woman who was certain she

had a disc herniation and was in

severe pain. "After treatment she

was astonished to put her feet on

the ground without the pain she

expected and had lived with for so

long."

The intense experience of so

much opportunity to offer manual

therapy definitely has a long term

influence on the participants.

According to Dr. Denisa Reiz

(Class of ’12) who travelled with

CMCC to the Dominican in 2012,

"Participating in the outreach

definitely altered the way I started

out in practice. I was so much more

confident going out. To this day my

practice focuses more on manual

therapy."


Successes in researchWith an eye to the future of a

thriving chiropractic profession,

CMCC continues to support research

to enhance its position among allied

health professions and provide

an essential understanding of its

efficacy.

CMCC wins competitive NIH grant

In the fall, CMCC was awarded a

major research grant by the National

Institutes of Health (NIH), an agency

of the United States Department

of Health and Human Services. The

R01 grant, rarely given outside of

the U.S., is the largest competitive,

federally funded grant CMCC has

received, providing almost $1 million

for a ground breaking study.

Led by Drs. Howard Vernon,

Professor, Graduate Education

and Research Programs, John J.

Triano, Dean, Graduate Education

and Research Programs, and Tony

Tibbles, Associate Dean, Clinics, the

three year study aims to establish a

manipulation control that will provide

a baseline against which treatment

outcomes may be measured.

“This approach is very valuable,

because it has never been done

before,” says Vernon, noting that

the results of this grant will improve

the rigour of future studies by better

defining and controlling variables.

“The methods of randomized clinical

trials (RCTs), to date, have not been

able to differentiate the specific

effects of the active treatment

component of spinal manipulation

from the non-specific effects such

as doctor-patient interactions,”

says Triano. “By combining modern

laboratory instrumentation in

the form of Force Sensing Table

Technology with clinical research

methods and treatment procedures,

the investigators at CMCC have

engineered a way to fill this gap."

This grant reaffirms CMCC’s

international reputation for leadership

in spinal research. "It will provide

a basis for future study that will

ultimately inform the care we provide

to our patients," says Dr. Moss.

International recognition

CMCC continues to offer its students

an unparalleled experience and an

opportunity to excel among their

international colleagues. Two recent

graduates of CMCC’s Graduate

Studies Programs were honoured at

the World Federation of Chiropractic

Conference in Durban, South Africa.

Dr. Jessica Wong (Class of ’10)

received the Scott Haldeman

Award first prize in the original

research competition for best

full paper. Wong co-authored the

paper with CMCC faculty members

Drs. Marion McGregor (Class of

’80), Director, Education, Year II,

Silvano Mior (Class of ’80), Senior

Advisor to the President and Patrick

Loisel, Coordinator, Work Disability

Prevention Program.

The study used a system dynamics

model that evaluated the impact of

policy changes on the number of

workers’ claims for compensation

due to back injuries in Ontario. The

model found that policies, when

modeled on economic theory, acted

as minor drivers of back claims. It

also identified other drivers. The

study was able to develop a stable

model, predictive of the number

of back claims over a 30 year

timeframe. It will help guide policy

research in workers’ compensation.

Dr. Jairus Quesnele (Class of '10)

was honoured with a second place

award for work he undertook while

supervised by Dr. John J. Triano,

Dean, Graduate Education and

Research Programs, CMCC and Dr.

Greg Wells from the University of

Toronto and the Hospital for Sick

Children.

Using functional MRI measures

of the neck and brain circulation

systems, their findings suggested

that high velocity, low amplitude

(HVLA) manipulation does not cause

clinically important change in blood

flow through the vertebral arteries.

According to Triano, studies of this

type may lead to further research

to help identify patients who have

inherent arterial weakness.


Dr. Brad Muir (Class of '03), clinician at the Campus Clinic, has just completed a clinical trial in

which he applied a novel treatment to the Temporomandibular joint (TMJ). "A patient came to me

in private practice, an opera singer who had to perform that evening and who couldn’t open his

mouth without pain. Conventional TMJ therapy would have been too painful so I tried something

new and it worked." Muir brought his discovery to CMCC and supervised a student group while they

ran a randomized clinical trial of the procedure. The study found the treatment group had significant

changes in pain and ability to open the jaw compared to the control group. Muir plans to confirm

findings in a future clinical trial in collaboration with dentists.


While chiropractic research creates

insight and builds chiropractic’s

cultural authority among its health

care peers, CMCC continues to

embrace academic partnerships

that encourage scientific exchange

and offer enriching opportunities for

students.

UOIT and CMCC partnership fuels

future policy

In February 2012, CMCC signed an

articulation agreement with the

University of Ontario Institute of

Technology (UOIT) that allowed

students of UOIT’s Honours

Kinesiology program to fast track

their careers and finish both their

undergraduate and professional

chiropractic degrees in seven

years instead of eight. Following

closely on the heels of this

groundbreaking agreement, CMCC

welcomed the UOIT-CMCC Centre for

the Study of Disability Prevention

and Rehabilitation to CMCC campus

in July 2012. The centre, under the

direction of Dr. Pierre Côté (Class of

’89), increases the number of research

centres on CMCC campus to three.

"This is a fantastic opportunity

to foster the development of

collaborative research between

CMCC and UOIT, and in so doing, to

eventually inform health policy in

Ontario," says Côté. "It is exciting to

see a faculty of health sciences and

a premiere clinical training program

come together to study disability."

The centre’s resources include a

$2.8 million grant from the Ministry

of Finance, Financial Services

Commission of Ontario, to develop

a Minor Injury Protocol that is

based on the best current scientific

evidence. The centre will also work

with other academic institutions,

industry and government agencies

to examine questions about the

prevention and management of

chronic conditions and disabilities.

According to Côté’s CMCC colleague,

Dr. Patrick Loisel, a pioneer in the

field of work disability prevention,

workplace disability costs between

$1 and $2 trillion world wide and

$30 billion in Canada annually.

Côté is also interested in

understanding how musculoskeletal

(MSK) pain and disability impacts

other chronic diseases. For example,

he hopes to better understand

the relationship between MSK

disability and mental health, and

to investigate the impact of MSK

disability on the rehabilitation of

patients with cardiovascular disease.

The centre celebrated its official

opening in November, when the

Honourable Deb Matthews, Minister

of Health and Long-Term Care joined

in a ribbon cutting ceremony with

representatives from CMCC and UOIT.

Providing opportunities for student

success

Again this year, CMCC was able to

extend an educational opportunity

to a student from the Health

Information Management (HIM)

program of UOIT in the completion

of a capstone practicum project.

The project identified potential

obstructions to a smooth flow in

patient care, informing CMCC’s Clinic

Management Team of areas where

efficiencies were required. This

work will assist in the creation of an

enhanced patient experience.

A poster of her information model

won first prize during the Inaugural

UOIT Research Day held this past

summer.

Sukhera has since been admitted

to a Master’s program at UOIT. Her

research will continue at CMCC as

an extension of her work with the

electronic records system in CMCC

clinics and in addition, she will be

modeling the conversion of manual

Human Resources processes to an

electronic system.

Dr. Karen Chrobak is a second year student within CMCC’s Graduate Studies

Program. Among her many research projects, Chrobak is conducting

a systematic review of manual therapy and headaches with Dr. Pierre

Côté and researchers within the UOIT-CMCC Centre for the Study of

Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation. She is shown here with Sharanya

systematic reviews is a challenging

endeavour and having their team to

guide us through the process has been

very beneficial. I definitely would not have

been able to conduct research at this

I couldn’t have done it without coming

Daryl Maier

Daryl is a breast cancer survivor. Scar

tissue from reconstructive surgery was

restricting her motion and interfering with

her life. She did not want to be restricted

in any way so she came to CMCC’s clinic

at Bronte Harbour in Oakville, ON. "This is

part of my wellness program. It has been

fabulous and innovative. Anything that

happens to me during the week, they fix."

Since 1994, CMCC has graduated 30 students from

the Sports Sciences Program within CMCC Graduate

Studies. Sports care is an area where chiropractic

is increasingly welcomed for its potential to treat

injuries without drugs and complement athletic

training regimens. As chiropractic gains traction as

a recognised and relied upon resource within elite

athletics, it is also recognised as an essential treatment

for sports enthusiasts and those who wish to remain

active and live their lives to the fullest.

CMCC clinicians represent some of the top sports

chiropractors and clinical specialists in Canada, most of

whom maintain a private practice and are able to draw

additional expertise from their experiences within

their own clinics.

Dr. Alex Lee (right) graduated from CMCC’s Sports

Sciences Graduate Program in 2009 and is currently

one of the primary clinicians at CMCC where he

oversees interns caring for a broad spectrum

of patients. His interest and expertise in sports

chiropractic is reflected by his care of patients like Barb

Kishimoto and Daryl Maier both of whom benefit from

his specialized skills as he transfers his knowledge to

Year IV interns.

Keeping people moving


"Last year I qualified for the 2013 Boston Marathon but

an injury put a stop to my training. The treatment

I received at Bronte allowed me to get back on track

and make it to the race."

Barb Kishimoto

Barb developed plantar fasciitis while training

for the Boston Marathon and was forced to stop

running. After losing two months of training

time, she came to the clinic at Bronte and with

treatment was able to resume training.

She made it to the historic marathon and was

less than a kilometre from the finish when

tragedy occurred and the race was brought to

a halt when bombs detonated at the finish line,

killing three people and injuring 264. “It was

pretty harrowing at Boston. I was stopped when

my watch read 41.5 km, so I was only 700 m

from the finish line.

"I'm going to run Boston again next year, so I

can have the closure of crossing the finish line.

In the meantime, I am still training six days a

week. I've done two sprint-distance triathlons

so far this season, as well as a 50 km charity

bike ride. I'm planning three more runs including

a half marathon in October and I’ll be returning

to the Bronte Harbour clinic to manage any

Highlights 2012–2013Inspiring active learning

Elearning is valued for its capacity to

support active learning and increase

skill development in higher order

thinking skills and critical reflection.

Taking advantage of its potential

to enhance course delivery, CMCC

has shifted select content online

to allow a focus on the application

of the content in class. To date, a

Simulation Laboratory Orientation

module allows for additional in class

learning and a Mathematics Behind

Biomechanics module for Anatomy

permits students to learn difficult

material in two different venues,

both accessable for practice and

review 24/7.

The success of the project to date

has given rise to its potential

expansion for which CMCC would

undergo a special review (the

Capacity to Deliver Online Degree

Programming) by the Postsecondary

Education Quality Assessment Board

(PEQAB).

Reducing costs and resources

Seeking to streamline process,

reduce costs and the institution’s

carbon footprint, CMCC’s Division

of Human Resources purchased

a software solution that provides

integrated electronic human

resources and payroll management.

The solution, purchased through

Avanti Software Inc., will enhance

operational efficiencies by reducing

duplication of entry and improve

management information.

Bringing payroll in-house will

produce approximately $16,000 in

operational savings.

Also during this fiscal year, CMCC

made plans to transfer its insured

benefits program to new carriers

that will maintain existing coverage

at a savings of an estimated $36,000

to the institution.

Prestigious honour bestowed

upon CMCC President

CMCC President Dr. Jean Moss was

honoured by the World Federation of

Chiropractic (WFC) during their 25th

Anniversary Gala in Durban, South

Africa, this past April. The WFC Honour

Awards acknowledge those who have

given a lifetime of distinguished and

exceptional services to advance the

international growth of the profession.

Mr. Kent Greenawalt, CEO of Foot

Levelers, USA and Dr. Anthony

Metcalfe, Past President, British

Chiropractic Association, European

Chiropractors Union, and the WFC

were similarly honoured at the event.

Dr. Moss is the second woman to be

distinguished from the total of 24

recipients between 1991 and 2012.

Enhancing the Simulation

Laboratory

The Simulation Laboratory

offers students an unparalleled

opportunity to enhance technique

skills, aid in the development of

emergency preparedness and

foster interprofessional educational

opportunities. This year, new

human analog models and delayed

video feedback have increased the

benefits of this increasingly popular

laboratory, providing students an

exceptional tool to increase their skill

level.

Faculty member Dr. Dave Starmer

developed the High Fidelity Thoracic

Adult Analog, mapping the average

distribution of muscle stiffness to

determine tissue compliance among

patients for the purpose of creating

foam models to mimic human tissue.

Starmer also realised students would

learn more if they could observe

their own adjustments, and created

a time delayed video feedback

system. Since February, this video

feedback provides an additional tool

to students receiving objective and

quantifiable data from the Force-

Sensing Tables and expert coaching

from an instructor, creating a rich,

informative process that enhances

their ability to benefit from their

experience in the Simulation

Laboratory.


Growing satisfaction among

students

Since 2007, CMCC’s annual student

survey reflects increasingly positive

feedback among students toward

broad areas of their education.

In 2012-13, student satisfaction

ratings continued to climb among

categories such as:

• quality of instruction

• academic programming

• communications with staff and

administration

• quality of academic resources

• clinical integration

The Class of 2013 had the highest

levels of satisfaction from among all

graduating classes in the history of

the survey.

Creating opportunities for

graduate students

CMCC is pleased to contribute to the

accomplishments of World Spine

Care (WSC) as it establishes clinics

in the developing world to fill the

profound gap in the treatment of

musculoskeletal conditions within

populations for whom a healthy

functioning spine is crucial to survival.

In February, Dr. Ismat Kanga (Class of

‘11) became the first clinical resident

from CMCC to volunteer within

WSC’s Botswana clinics as part of her

Graduate Program. Kanga focussed

her studies on clinical aspects of

chiropractic and was eager to focus

time on treating and supporting

chiropractic’s expansion outside

North America.

Innovating our services with

ehealth records at CMCC

clinics

CMCC’s eClinic Project to implement

and customize an electronic health

record (EHR) system was conceived

to improve care coordination,

increase efficiencies and cost

savings, and to improve the quality

of patient care through standardized

records keeping among CMCC

clinics.

In depth consultations assessed the

current and future needs of an EHR

for the CMCC clinics and identified

the unique attributes required by

a chiropractic teaching institution

with multiple clinic sites. Among the

identified customisations was the

need to track the educational path

of the clinical learning experience

and the ability to analyse patient

care demographics and data.

CMCC chose to adopt the Open

Source Clinical Application Resource

otherwise known as OSCAR. During

the 2012-13 fiscal year, CMCC

undertook the implementation and

customization of OSCAR for the

Campus Clinic as a pilot for its other

clinics. Preliminary feedback has

been very positive as both interns

and clinicians have embraced

the technology and its potential

to improve communication and

thereby patient care.

Recognising the gift of a

lifetime: the Body Donation

Recognition Plaque

In December, CMCC unveiled the

Celebration of Life Body Donation

Recognition Plaque to honour

the special individuals who have

furthered the pursuit of chiropractic

education and research through

their most generous gift. An idea put

forward by Dr. Paul Holtom and the

Holtom Family, the plaque serves as

a memorial to provide permanent

recognition.

The Body Donation Program began

in 1950 when the Anatomy Act

of Ontario was amended to allow

CMCC to teach human dissection.

A vital part of the anatomy

curriculum, the program makes

it possible for CMCC students to

realise the depth of anatomical

knowledge necessary for a life time

of vital work in health care. The

plaque resides in the foyer leading

to the Anatomy Laboratory.


CMCC continues to encourage

and initiate opportunities for

interprofessional education

and collaboration within its

undergraduate and graduate

programs, knowing that student

exposure to a spectrum of

health care professionals leads to

increased professional collaboration

after graduation.

On February 12, 2013, CMCC

interns participated in the second

annual Interprofessional Conflict

IPE Session at the University of

Toronto. Over 130 CMCC interns

were joined by 200 medical

and pharmacy students. The

program provided students with

information about each profession,

potential sources of conflict, and

mechanisms to help mitigate

conflict. Participants reported

that the session was helpful and

had improved confidence in their

ability to collaborate. The session

was led by Dr. Mark Bonta, Faculty

Lead for Collaborator Competency

and Interprofessional Education,

University of Toronto, Faculty of

Medicine and CMCC’s Dr. Deborah

Kopansky-Giles.

An ongoing success

CMCC’s graduate students and

interns working under Dr. Igor

Steiman continue to participate in

St. Michael’s Hospital Department

of Family and Community Medicine

through their inclusion in the

Academic Family Health Team

(AFHT) at St. Michael’s Hospital.

Within the AFHT, one of the largest

of its kind in Ontario, CMCC interns

and graduate students work

alongside physicians, dieticians,

social workers, psychologists,

primary care pharmacologists and

dentists, each of whom may play a

collaborative role in patient care.

Supporting innovation

In the spring of 2013, Dr. Deborah

Kopansky-Giles, CMCC Professor

and colleague of Dr. Steiman at St.

Michael’s Hospital, was honoured

with the St. Michael’s Hospital Health

Disciplines Award, given to an individual

who supports a culture of discovery

through innovation and research in

health disciplines. Kopansky-Giles

was recognised for her advocacy for

interprofessional collaborative practice

and as a champion of research and

scholarship on the outcomes of work.

Highlights of Kopansky-Giles’ work

pertaining to the award included

leading a major Health Canada

Primary Health Care Transition Fund

research initiative on the integration

of chiropractic into the hospital setting.

Additionally, Kopansky-Giles

participated in research to study the

perceptions of students towards

other health disciplines and the

collaborative practice model. This

research has been presented

internationally and the collaborative

model that she helped implement

is highly regarded for its innovation,

effectiveness and efficiency.

CMCC congratulates Dr. Kopansky-Giles

for this work, and that of her colleagues

who continue to seek new avenues

for interprofessional successes. Their

continual innovation creates new

opportunities for the profession.

Engendering future collaboration


Making a difference

Devon Healey is a stage actress and teacher with a specialty in physical

theatre. She said when she developed vision limiting Stargardt's disease,

the most difficult part was its debilitating affect on her ability to move

with agility.

Since Stargardt's robs individuals of their central vision, Healey constantly

stresses her neck and shoulders to engage her peripheral vision. All

the tiny compensatory movements, the affect on her posture and

subsequent pain in her muscles and joints were making it impossible for

her to move with the fluidity necessary for her theatrical work.

Seeking an avenue that would allow her to keep moving and acting, she

tried CMCC’s clinic at Bronte Harbour and has never looked back.

“The clinical team at Bronte is my safety net. It allows me to turn

smoothly, function and keep working,” says Healey, who has returned to

acting and teaching. "It’s one more thing I don’t have to worry about."

resulted in limited mobility in her shoulder and chronic pain.

In 2012, her MD asked her to stop taking her regular pain

medication due to medical complications and she was left

without help for her conditions, which were severely limiting

her quality of life.

She found out about CMCC’s Clinic at Bronte Harbour through

her friend shortly after.

“Without Roger, I’m not sure where I’d be. If not for him, I

wouldn’t be doing half as much as I am doing now.” With

help from her intern, now graduate Dr. Roger Singh (Class of

'13), she has experienced a 50 to 60 per cent increase in her

mobility and has referred her husband to the clinic.

The Canadian Memorial Chiropractic

College (CMCC) is once again proud

of its solid financial performance over

the past year. With continued attention

to prudent fiscal management, CMCC

completed the year ending May 31,

2013 with an excess of revenue over

expenditures in the General Fund of

$647,7191 and a strong cash position.

Prudent fiscal management

CMCC used the excess of revenue over

expenditures generated in 20132, along

with net Hands on the Future® Capital

Campaign proceeds, to support the

repayment of its long term debt, $1.6

million3 of the principal on the loan

and mortgage was repaid this past

year. Since incurring this long term

debt in 2004, CMCC has reduced the

principal owing by an accumulated $15.9

million of the $22 million borrowed—

reflecting a rate of repayment that has

substantially exceeded expectations.

This accelerated debt repayment is the

result of prudent financial management

and continuing support from donors

over the years. The benefits of this

strategy continue to strengthen CMCC’s

sound financial position by reducing the

related carrying charges. Since 2004,

the accelerated debt repayments have

reduced interest otherwise payable by a

total of over $495,000.

Net proceeds to the Capital Campaign

are committed to retiring loan

and mortgage debt related to the

construction of the 6100 Leslie

Street campus. In 2013, campaign

contributions grew by $196,8074 and

total pledges toward the campaign

stand at over $19.7 million.

Investments of $4.57 million (fair valued

as at May 31, 2013), are composed

of restricted funds and an internal

general purpose fund which receives

quarterly additions. The investment

fund performed well over the past

fiscal period with the improved market

conditions. Investments are governed

by a Board approved policy wherein a

risk balanced strategy is professionally

managed to the objectives of preserving

the capital’s purchasing power, providing

appropriate liquidity and generating

long term capital growth. During this

past fiscal year, the third year of the

established McMorland Family Research

Chair in Mechanobiology which focuses

on spine instability, degeneration and

joint dysfunction/subluxation, $611,509

in donations were received. Together

with the founding donation of $500,000

from Mrs. Barbara McMorland, $1.3

million has been pledged toward CMCC’s

goal of $3.5 million to fully fund this

dynamic research initiative to improve

patients’ health and well being.

Revenue and expense flows

The Doctor of Chiropractic program

represents CMCC's largest offering,

and thus it is no surprise that student

and tuition fees continue to reflect

the largest source of revenue. During

the past fiscal year, this category

represented 75.2% (75.8% last year) of

the overall gross operating revenue,5,6

with a full student complement.

Research activities continued robustly

on new grants and those previously

awarded.

Diversification of revenue streams

continues to be a CMCC priority. The

institution experienced relatively higher

non-tuition based revenue from the

contributions of clinic fees, investment

income, research activities and the

Supply Centre and Bookstore while

experiencing relatively lower non-

tuition based revenue from continuing

education programs, membership and

parking fees.

Overall operating expenditures5,

though higher in dollar terms, were

proportionately consistent with the prior

year with relatively higher expenses

in building repairs and maintenance

and relatively lower expenses for the

continuing education program and for

interest and bank charges. The activity

levels reflect an active institution and

inflationary cost increases.

Continued prudent budget

management was exercised by all

divisions, recognizing the value for

money relationship to expenditures

in the delivery of world class services

to support patient focused chiropractic

education, research and health care.

A moment of reflection

CMCC’s financial operations and

position continues to be strong and

stable. The institution's continuing

success is the result of the strong

dedication, energy, and support of

faculty, staff, students, members,

donors and volunteers. These

remarkable individuals enthusiastically

help CMCC to realize its mission and

vision every day. CMCC continues

to have much to be proud of — a

remarkable and respected history and

an even brighter future.

A set of condensed financial

statements follows for the period

of June 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013

which provide a reporting of

CMCC’s financial results. With this

fiscal year CMCC adopted the new

accounting standards for not-for-

profit organizations and is required

to disclose the transitional affect

in the Condensed Statement of

Financial Position7 as at June 1, 2011.

Following is a brief description of

each statement.

Condensed statement of financial

position

Describes the overall financial

position or health of the

organization. It itemizes assets

and liabilities including deferred

contributions and fund balances.

Highlights from this statement

include a strong cash position, a

diversified investment portfolio, and

a net worth of $27.9 million.

Condensed statement of operations

and changes in fund balances

States the sources of revenue and

expenses for the General, Restricted

and Endowment funds. This

statement identifies that an operating

excess of revenues over expenses of

$647,719 was generated, stated as

the General Fund.

The fund balances reflect the

accumulated surpluses of the General,

Restricted and Endowment funds.

These represent the net worth of each

fund as reflected in the Condensed

Statement of Financial Position. Fund

balances are created by the excess

of revenue over expenditures and

inter-fund transfers. The Restricted

Funds from the Capital Campaign

funds were used to reduce the

loan and mortgage debt, and the

Governors’ Club funds were allocated

to biomechanical laboratory research

assets and computers for the clinic’s

electronic health records system.

Condensed statement of cash flows

Describes sources and uses of cash

throughout the year. During the

2013 fiscal year, the major sources

of cash were generated from

operating activities, $2.7 million, and

proceeds from the Capital Campaign,

$196,807. Major uses of cash were

the repayment of debt, $1.6 million,

capital asset additions, $952,927,

and the purchase of investments,

$523,198.

Condensed schedule of continuity

of restricted funds

Describes a summary of the increase

in funds, investment income earned,

expenses and inter-fund transfers

of each one of the restricted funds.

CMCC’s restricted funds include the

Governors’ Club; Research; Capital

Campaign Building; and, Scholarship,

Bursary, and Other Trust funds.
