Student of the Month by Alyssa Johnson
The October Student of the month is Sydney Belcher and Silas Fry. They
are both in 8th grade. Sydney Belcher’s favorite hobbies are sports and four-
wheeling. Her favorite T.V. shows are Stranger Things, Riverdale, and the
Walking Dead. Sydney's favorite subject is ELA. Her favorite colors are blue
and purple. Her favorite type of music is pop and country. Sydney's favorite
thing about CMS is the activities and some of the staff. And this is her first
time to be picked for middle school. Silas’ favorite hobbies are hunting, playing
drums, attending church and spending time with his friends and family. His fa-
vorite T.V. show is the Walking Dead, and his favorite movie is Star Wars: The
Empire Strikes Back. His favorite colors are red and blue. His favorite subjects
are Band and Science. His favorite type of music is Christian Worship. His fa-
vorite thing about CMS is that you don’t have to pay for school food. This is
not Silas’ first time being picked for student of the month.
Top 5 Christmas Movies by Alyssa Johnson
Christmas is coming soon, so here are the top five Christmas movies you
should watch. One of the top five Christmas movies is the Santa Clause, which was
made in 1994 staring Tim Allen. The next movie, which is my favorite, is Dr. Suess'
How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which was made in 2000 starring Jim Carrey. The
third movie is Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. This movie came out in 1964, and
took 18 months and 22 room size sets to complete. The fourth movie is the 2009 film
A Christmas Carol. Last but not least is the TV short Frosty the Snowman, which was
published in 1969, and based off the song "Frosty the Snowman".

1.What school are you from? Madison Middle School
2. Do you like it better at CMS? Yes
3. Why did you come to CMS? I moved in with my
mom.
4. What is your favorite subject? English
5. What are some of your hobbies? Baseball, Basket-
ball, and football
Hottest Toys by Trenton Porter
Some of the hottest toys are hoverboards, the Nintendo Switch, and new Nerf guns. The
reason the hoverboard is popular is because it came out last year, but it is one of the hottest
toys this year. The hoverboards with the LG battery are the best ones to get, even though it
may cost a little bit more. Those are the hottest toys for 2017. There are so many more of
the hottest toys. But these are the hottest toys for 2017.
Honor Band by Callie McNeely
On December the 1st, a small, very
talented group of students who play musi-
cal instruments at CMS will be traveling to
Marshall University to play in a state-
wide honor band. The students will
be divided into different groups based on
their playing level and age. They will play
two to four songs depending on what the
band directors decide. The bands are very
selective on who they choose, only the best
of the best from each school are able to attend. The band director chooses ten to
recommend, then he rates them one to five stars in their attitude, playing abil-
ity, and trustworthiness. From there, the band directors can choose as many as
they want, based on instrument, age, and playing abilities. They can choose
as many as one, or as many as ten. Eight children from the CMS band were
able to participate. They played an array of genres, and every single band was
unique. Some choose "Pirates of the Carribean" music, and "The Avengers" and
other bands played slower songs like "Blue", a selection from Kristina's Col-
ors by Robert Smith. No matter what band, or what instrument, all of these stu-
dents did very well.
New Games by Frank Bailey
“ Spintire Mudrunner” is a new game that some people would like if they
like mud. Some people like it for its realism and the graphics.
“Forza Horizon Motorsports 7” is another game that came out that’s for
people who like to race fast or slow car. You can get a slow car and make it
faster that a Lamborghini.
Holiday Recipes by Callie McNeely
Here is a topic that goes through homes every time the holiday season
creeps closer and closer. "What should I make for Christmas Dinner?" Well,
look no further! Find all the answers right here!
It is always a good idea to have plenty of desserts! So, what I will be
covering is the sweet side of the meal. First off, frosted sugar cookies! It is a
holiday classic to just about every family, making Christmas cookies with your
mom or grandma, the smell of fresh baked goods flooding through the
halls. So many memories come back when baking these! So, let's get on with
my personal favorite sugar cookie recipe!
Alton Brown's Holiday Sugar Cookies
3 cups all-purpose flour, 3/4 teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon salt,1 cup
unsalted butter, softened, 1 cup sugar, 1 egg, beaten, 1 tablespoon
milk, powdered sugar, for rolling out dough
Cream butter, sugar, and vanilla in mixer on medium-high speed. Add in
egg. Sift together all dry ingredients excluding the powdered sugar. Slowly add
in dry ingredients to wet ingredients on low speed. Mix until dough pulls away
from sides of bowl. (if dough get too thick, add milk.) Sprinkle powdered sugar
on clean, dry surface and roll out dough to desired thickness. Cut shapes, and
bake on a greased pan at 350° for 12-16 minutes rotating when necessary.
Royal Icing
1 lb powdered sugar (about 4 cups or 450 grams), 4 egg whites (or 1/2 cup liq-
uid egg whites), 1 teaspoon vanilla
Optional: food coloring in desired colors
Beat egg white until frothy on high, then turn
speed down and slowly add in powdered sugar. Then,
when sugar is fully incorporated, add in vanilla and
mix on medium-high speed for 30-45 seconds. Add
desired food colorant, pipe designs onto cookies and
let dry for 12 hours or overnight. Icing will harden.
Christmas Wish List by Nina Ellis
My Christmas list includes a makeup table, some clothes, and shoes be-
cause I really didn't ask for anything. I love Christmas because we get to spend
time with my family and we get to be together and thank God and pray and
things. That is my Christmas list. What is yours?
Thanksgiving Break by Nina Ellis
My Thanksgiving was pretty amazing. I did a lot of things. First, I went
hunting with my dad. It was pretty amazing. Another thing I did was go to my
boyfriend's house on Thanksgiving Day! I did lots of things with my family
like eat. We had lots of things to eat like corn, turkey, pies, ham, and green
beans! And lots more of things when I went hunting with my dad, we saw one
deer! It was really fun to spend time with my dad! Many of my friends were
partying with their families. They said they had fun. That is all we did with our
friends!
Christmas Dinner by Nathan Lusk
For Christmas dinner many people eat
candy. Other people eat things like turkey,
ham, and mashed potatoes. Most candies
people eat are peanut butter fudge, brownies,
peanut butter candy, and cookies. You can
also make stuff like green beans, cornbread,
or macaroni and cheese with bacon bits.
There are all sorts of things to eat for Christ-
mas dinner.
Girls’ Basketball by Baylee Belcher
This year in girls basketball is going to be a good one. They won Black Dia-
mond last year. Everyone is scared of them. The girls have not played their first
game yet but they are looking forward to a good season. Coach Tommy Kirk,
Jared Bennett, John Carter, and Chris Gore are looking for a undefeated sea-
son. All the girls are more than ready for their first game 12/03/17.

Secret Santa by Baylee Belcher
Secret Santa is a very good thing we do here at Chapmanville. The girls
Basketball, boys Basketball, and the Cheerleaders all get in groups and buy
presents for kids that don’t really have anything. We will have, pizza, pop and
cake. This is my very favorite thing to do. I would love if everyone could par-
ticipate.
Winter Fashion by Kaitlynn Woody
This winter, there is a lot of new fashion. People like to wear many dif-
ferent things. Girls like to wear Lu Laroe leggings, scarfs, flannels, and boots.
Lu Laroe leggings are leggings that are comfortable. Some have designs and
some are plain. Girls love to wear scarfs during the winter. They're cute and
keep you warm. Girls also love to wear flannels. Flannels are stylish and look
cute with almost anything! Finally, girl absolutely love to wear boots. Some
girls love to wear long leather boots and some love to wear short fuzzy boots.
Black Diamond Conference by Kaitlynn Woody
On Saturday, January 27th 2018, The CMS cheerleaders competed in their
Black Diamond Conference competition. They competed against Madison Mid-
dle, George Washington (GW) Middle, Sherman Middle, Duval Middle, Man
Middle, and Poca Middle. The order of performance was Sherman, Madison,
GW, Chapmanville, Poca, Man, and Duval. Each team could only have
13 cheerleaders compete. Chapmanville's 13 girls that competed were
(8th graders) Kaitlynn Woody, Emma Renner, Kaylee Tomblin, Monica Chap-
man, Haylee Webb, (7th graders) Lily Ball, Jarrah Baxter,
Abi Neil, KalLee Ellis, Chloe Trickler, (6th graders) Trinity Mullins, Bailey
Ferell, and Madi Thompson. Each team had to perform a 30-40 sec-
ond technical cheer and a 2 minute and 30 second dance routine including
stunts, tumbling, and eight, eight counts of dance. Before any team competed,
they had to have safety check to make sure their stunts were legal and a 5-
minute warm up time. If a stunt was illegal, they had to change it be-
fore competing or they got a big deduction. Each team got judged on difficulty,
creativity, etc. After each team had safety check and their 5-minute warm up
time, it was finally time for the competition to start. If the judges seen a stunt
bobble or anything happen in your routine, you
got deductions. CMS cheerleaders' coaches, Michelle Browning and Maryann
Niel, wouldn’t let the CMS cheerleaders watch the teams that competed before
them so they wouldn’t get nervous. There were 4 judges total. A judge in the
back watching safety and three judges watching from the front. The three judg-
es in the front each had a score sheets. After each team had competed and the
judges were finalizing the total score, they played music for anyone to go out
and dance in the middle of the floor. Then after the judges had the results ready,
it was finally time for the winners to announced. There was a tiny plaque for
3rd place, A small wall plaque for 2nd place plus medals, and a big plaque that
sits on a table and medals for 1st place. The announcer announced
3rd place first 2nd place next, then 1st lace last.GW got 3rd place, Madison got
2nd place, and Chapmanville got 1st place. CMS cheerleaders got a 3 peat this
year meaning they one 1st place in the Black Diamond
Cheer Conference 3 years in a row. Congratulations to the Chapman-
ville Middle School Cheerleaders on their 3rd win in a row!

Interest Groups: Decoration Club by Taylor Scudero
This school year we have started a new thing where we have inter-
est groups and the students go and talk about stuff they are interested in.
The most voted group was Decoration Club. The Decoration club is
where they do bulletin boards and decorate the school. They have been
doing a lot of the school's bulletin boards in our school. They decorate
for Christmas, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. They have been doing a
wonderful job at the school. Here is some of the bulletin boards they
have decorated. The bulletin boards and decorating are done by students
and ran by Mrs. Sanders Keep up the good jobs student's way to go!
