Congratulations!

We are so proud of our Music program at Castle North Mid-

dle School! Recently, our band program was named a recipi-

ent of the Indiana State School Music Association All-Music

Award for the 2018-2019 school year.

Congratulations to all of our musical students and directors.

Letters About Literature

The Indiana Center for the Book announced the state

winners for this year’s Letters About Literature (LAL)

competition, a national reading and writing promotion

of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

After choosing a book (fiction, nonfiction, short story,

poem, essay or speech) where the student connected

with strong feelings, the student wrote a personal let-

ter (not a fan letter) to the author. This letter was writ-

ten as if they were having a conversation with the

author.

Over 1,000 students from Indiana participated in the

contest. Of the 126 winners, 35 were selected by the

State Judging Team from the Level 1 (grades 4-6)

category. Five students from Mrs. Schaperjohn’s

writing class were selected as finalists, semi-

finalists, and honorable mentions. Each student was

invited to an awards ceremony on Saturday, April 13

at the Indiana State Library. Zara, Olivia, Patrick and

Dalton attended the day’s events which included a

writing workshop, lunch and a ceremony headlined by

A’Lelia Bundles, great-great-granddaughter of Mad-

am C.J. Walker and author about of All About Madam

C.J. Walker. Also in attendance was Celeste Wil-

liams, Indiana writer and playwright, and Professor

Watermelon, Indiana author of George and the Goblin

Hole.

Zara Ahmed placed third for her entry. She con-

nected with author R. J. Palacio for his book Wonder.

The Level I Semifinalist was Olivia Sommerville for

her letter to Corrie ten Boom, author of The Hiding

Place. Finalists receiving Honorable Mention were

Delaney Blankenbuehler-Lee, Patrick Mardis, and

Dalton Westfall. Congratulations to all students

that were recognized for their letters.

Creed is an amazing program that does

many things to benefit you. Creed can

pick someone up when they feel down and

make you feel like a better person. When-

ever I got a Creed card it was for getting

the best grade on a test, which brightened

up my day. Over the next few days I had

to decide who to give my Creed Card to.

Whenever I gave my Creed card to the

person, it made me feel really good and it

made the other person’s day better. With

the Creed Card, you can do many fun

things, including sitting in the squire sky-

box, getting into an athletic event for free,

sitting at the creed table, and getting in the

lunch line first. Creed is a wonderful thing.

Green Team’s

Community Day Update

A Big Shout Out to the 30 workers that attended our

first CNMS Community Work Day for the garden on

Saturday, April 13th from 9 AM to 12 PM. Through our

Eco-Schools USA National Wildlife Federation grant

that we received last year, one of our activities was to

coordinate a work day with volunteers. We accom-

plished a lot with the help of a grandparent, parents,

Emily Wood, the Indiana Wildlife representative, and

Sunny Faas from the Newburgh Garden Club.

We removed most of the unusable compost area and

one of the flower beds, replaced lattice work and some

rotten timbers, added rocks to one of the tiered gar-

dens, and did some general spring clean up. This

week, the Newburgh Garden Club will join sixth grade

students in the garden to continue weeding, planting

and mulching. There is always something to do in the

garden so we appreciate all of the additional help.
