COASTAL SERVICES

Natural disasters, coastal erosion and human impacts to the environment are just a few of the forces that regularly threaten the protection and preservation of our coastal resources. Since they are unavoidable and often unpredictable, we know how important it is to prepare for them.

For those who depend on healthy coasts for their livelihood, recreation and quality of life, Freese and Nichols provides a comprehensive and diverse range of coastal and engineering services, including:

• Shoreline Habitat Restoration, Conservation and Preservation

• Environmental Permitting, Regulatory Compliance and Third-Party EIS-NEPA

• Ecological Assessments (Wetlands Seagrass, Fish, Plankton and Benthos)

• Coastal Zone Planning and Management

• Coastal Engineering, Dredging and Navigation, and Shoreline Infrastructure

• Coastal Geosciences (Local and Regional Sediment Management)

SUNDOWN ISLAND RESTORATIONAUDUBON TEXAS

Every year, thousands of pelicans, terns, egrets and spoonbills nest on Sundown Island, a bird sanctuary in Matagorda Bay on the Gulf Coast. Waves and ship wakes have reduced the island from near 100 acres to less than 70 acres. Our team provided ecological and engineering design and other guidance to manage this erosion and rebuild the island.

Freese and Nichols’ coastal team members are experienced in sediment investigations and management.

Our team has worked on three of the major regional sediment management projects in Texas bays. These projects included development of management plans, identification of sediment sources and offshore surveys.

Our team is very familiar with the Texas General Land Office’s spatial databases for sediment management and habitat protection and restoration, including TxSed, the GLO’s Resource Management Codes and

the Texas Environmental Sensitivity Index.

Our comprehensive coastal services help address a wide range of coastal issues, and our capabilities are expanded through partnerships with agencies and universities, such as Texas A&M University at Corpus Christi, College Station and Galveston.

These partnerships provide access to research and data that are invaluable to understanding Gulf coastlines and coastal ecosystems.

LAVACA BAY RECEIVING WATER MONITORING PROGRAMFORMOSA PLASTICS CORPORATION

Freese and Nichols monitors the health and structure of the biological community in the vicinity of the Outfall 001 discharge, the sediment and water quality in the vicinity of the outfall discharge, and the fish and shellfish tissue constituent concentrations for animals in the vicinity of the outfall discharge to assess any potential human health risks.

A sampling of other coastal project experience includes:

Shoreline erosion management at Sundown Island for the Audubon Society

Environmental Sensitivity Index mapping and updates using advanced GIS mapping techniques for the Texas General Land Office

Magnolia Inlet restoration for Calhoun County
