River sewage threat to Blue Flag statusThe Blue Flag is a recognised global label and is awardedto beaches and marinas that meet strict criteria for waterquality, environmental education, environmentalmanage-ment, and safety and services.

Thereare4 000sitesaroundtheworld.SixareinKwaZu-lu-Natal, includingRichardsBay, Southport andUmzumbeaswell as nine beaches in theWestern Cape and one in theNorthern Cape.

“[The river sewage contamination] can be addressedthrough the improvement of infrastructure and how wemanage our waste,” he said.

Recently thecityadmitted thatat least30%of rivers run-ning into theoceaninDurbanatanygiventimeare hygieni-cally “critical”.

Thisweekend the Ohlanga River—which ends at Umh-langaBeach—wasdeemedunsafewithreportsofdeadfishon the sand banks as a result of a sewage spill upstream.

While the problem was rectified, residents were urged

were working at 75%.“What our municipality is pushing out has not brought

us up to the standard thatwe’re supposed to at. There havebeen many suggestions, which included recycling sewagewater, at recent meetings. Wemust have all our ducks in arowbefore undertaking thesemassive steps. My concern isthat if we cannot control disposing of water to rivers andoceans, how canwework towards recycling water or evenBlue Flag status?”

Also commenting on the issue, chairperson of the KeepTongaatBeautifulAssociationSoobrieGovindsamysaidtheorganisation supported the Blue Flag status.

“Thishascomeup fordiscussionatourmeetingsandweare fully behind it. There are a variety of positive spin-offsfrom achieving this status, the biggest obviously being thetourism perks. Westbrook Beach is already immaculatelyclean and has been well taken care off by the community. These are positives we should encourage.”

Toddler dies afterbeing hit by a bus>> Angry mob threatens to ‘kill’ bus driver

WEEKLY REPORTER

A TWO-year-old child was killed after being run overby a bus in the Verulam CBD, Verulam on Monday.

The incident left by-standers outraged as they at-tempted to assault the driver shortly afterwards.

The child whowas strapped to themother’s back fell offand landed on the road. A passing bus then drove over thechild, said Reaction Unit South Africa head Prem Balram.

The municipality has acknowledged thatthe sewage leaksare the result of blockages inthe sanitation system.

eThekwini Municipality spokesperson To-zi Mthethwa said the issue at the Waterloopump station is being addressed and moni-tored until themunicipality’s water and sani-tation department is satisfied.

However Tongaat Civic Association presi-dent Jeeva Pillay said he felt the issue of BlueFlag could not be discussed without first en-suring a solid sewage plan.

“The flag status is secondary. What weshould be focusing on is clean water. Thatshould be our first priority. Althoughwe defi-nitely support the concept of the Blue Flag asitbrings ina lotofwonderful tourismopportu-nities.” Pillay said currently sewage plants

MERVYN KRISHNA AND JYO-THI LALDAS

UMFOLOZI FET College (Mandenicampus) has, in one swift move, lostabout 385 years of teaching experience after serving termination noticeson 12 seasoned lecturers.

The lecturers, some of whom havebeen teaching in excess of 40 years, have either been boarded or have taken a package.

The college, which served short notice to the lecturers, now intends toemploy “inexperienced” lecturers intheir place.

One of the affected lecturers, DasHarilal with more than 37 years’ experience in the field of mathematics, whowas sympathetic to the state of unemployment in the country and who supports job opportunities for young people, is unhappy about the manner inwhich their contracts were terminated.

“The collegeservedsomeof thelecturers with a 30day notice periodwhile a few were given even less notice.I cannot see the logic [behind this]when qualified lecturers can be terminated midyear.

“This has come as a shock to all ofus who have financial commitments, taking into account that the currentcontract runs until February next year. This is a loss of income for six months,”said Harilall.

He said that several meetings wereheld between upper management andthe lecturers.

“Impassioned pleas were made tomanagement [to allow] the lecturersto finish at the end of the year so stu

dents don’t suffer, and allowing trialsand final exams to run smoothly.”

Whenaskedwhatreasonsweregiven for the termination of the contracts,Harilal said as per the UI9 form, it stated “item number five”, meaning theend of a contract.

“This does not make sense as thistermination comes in the middle of thecollege year.

“The mission of the college is thatthe interest of students must comefirst, now how does this put the interest of students first. They are being leftwithout a lecturer at a prime time oftheiryear.”Thematterhasbeenreported to the Education Labour RelationsCouncil, which is investigating the lecturers’ cases.

Students at the campus have beenbadly affected since the lecturers haveyet to be replaced.

According to one student, whochose to remain anonymous for fear ofvictimisation, they go to campus foronly a few, if any, lectures.

“We do not have a maths lecturerand maths has always been a problemsubject because it is so difficult. At thisrate we do not know how we will passour exams.

“We are being deprived of our education and this is not fair. We do noteven know what is going on because noone will tell us. All we know is that wehave no lecturers and we are losingground fast.”

As of Monday, students have beenwithout lecturers for four weeks.

Spokesperson for the campus SamZungu declined to comment saying thematter is sub judice.

Tongaat manscoops Nasa award>> Smalltown boy achieves what every engineer dreams of

SHANNON HOPKINS

TONGAATBORN man AdirJugnarayan (29) is the youngestNasa staff member to have won

the organisation’s Zero Gravity Awardfor Excellency.

He attended a local secondaryschool and then went to University ofKwaZuluNatal.

He will officially receive the awardataceremonyinDecember.Jugnarayanreceived the honour because of his effort and ongoing work on the SaudiSAT4 satellite project.

“It feels surreal to be recognised formy efforts at such a relatively youngage. It certainly makes up for all thoseyears where I would stay up for hourseither studying for exams or working tomeet deadlines. It is my biggestachievement so far.”

Jugnarayan started his career as aresearcher for a short period at the Durban University of Technology just afterfinishing his mechanical engineer studies.

He then moved onto a job atDESign International in Umbogin twini, where he gained experience in thefield of robotics and automation.

He got a job at Nasa after workingon a robotic assembly line for a Germancar manufacturer. The level of technology he used “seemed to have caughtNasa’s eye”. The agency offered him ajob to work in conjunction with it last

year. Now Jugnarayan is part of a team

that focuses on the design and analysisof satellite structural frames, as well asthe assembly and the integration ofpayload subssystems that are necessary for the mission at hand.

“The thing I enjoy most is also themost stressful part about working withNasa. Working in the aerospace industry makes you look at everything in atotally different perspective.

Space, while beautiful as it may appear, is an extremely cruel and harshenvironment in which to work.

“Everything has to be consideredand examined on a microscopic levelwhere only specialised materials andpaints are used. Anything from a

bringing it closer to Earth so astronautscan explore it. He is also being assignedto another project in the Middle East forNasa’s geo orbital satellite a trainingexercise to enable staff at the partnercompany with their future in aerospace.

While he could not confirm if he wasto be involved in the Mars One Project a mission to the planet in 2024 Jugnarayan says it is important for humankind.

“At some point Earth will becomeoverpopulated or drained of natural resources. I feel this mission is a step inthe right direction in terms of us beingable to colonise other planets. This willalso ensure the human race will surviveoutside their native habitat should itever reach a stage where a global evacuation will be required.

“These “colonisation missions” willalso pave the way for current and futuregenerations to derive new concepts tomake space travel quicker and morecosteffective,” he said.

Whenaskedif itwasadreamforhimto work on spaceorientated projects,Jugnarayan says he used to joke aboutit as a child.

“I think it’s every engineer’s dreamto work in conjunction, or be affiliatedwith, spaceorientated initiatives, letalone an agency like Nasa. When I waslittle I used to joke about it, but I honestly never thought the fantasy wouldbecome a reality,” he said.

Jugnarayan’s biggest dream is tostart his own company that will specialise in robotic and unmanned solutionsfor jobs deemed “too dangerous” forhumans as well as have a functionalexosuit similar to that of the one seenin Marvel’s Iron Man comics and movies.

“In terms of shortterm goals Iwould also like to also get experiencein the military and medical fieldswhereby I can be part of a team thatlooks at creating hybrid robotic limbsthat can be used to aid amputees,” headded.

BEFORE I became a journalist, I madea living as a private tutor. I startedwith a terrible hourly fee as I did not

know how much tutors usually charged. AsI got wiser I increased my fee and startedto make a somewhat respectable living…enough to break even with the taxi

fare I paid for every day.I was not a teacher, have never been,

and I respect teachers and the work theydo. I did, however, find myself rectifying alot of their mistakes when I was tutoringstudents in mathematics and the physicalsciences. My first judgment was that thestudents who denied being taught a basicconcept in either subject were being lazy,as is almost always the case.

But then I started getting calls fromparents who had very bright children fromprestigious schools in the Richards Bayand Empangeni areas. These children weregetting distinctions in all their other subjects except either mathematics or thephysical sciences. I found that a lot of thebasics lacked, not because the studentswere lazy, but because their teachers hadfailed to teach them the basics.

Whether this failure was caused by alack of knowledge or time, I cannot specu

late. Academics from the University of KZNand Durban University of Technology arebeing quoted in many an internet conversation regarding the competency of matricmathematics teachers.

This is after a report was published inThe Mercury newspaper on Monday 21 July, regarding a study published in the ‘Perspectives in Education’ journal. Accordingto the report, a sample of 253 KZN teachersaveraged a mark 57% when writing a pastMathematics exam paper, typical of whatthe students they teach, have to write.

The paper was separated into four levels (levels one to four) which increased indifficulty. The fourth and final level involves problem solving, which was mostchallenging. At this level, the sample ofteachers tested averaged a mark of 26%,which is even lower than the ridiculous30% pass needed. Having encounteredthese kinds of questions a lot myself, I

agree that they are quite challenging. These researchers question the quality

of the material the teachers are deliveringto learners if they clearly fail to understandit themselves. I have to agree with thembut also take caution in knowing that notall is cut and dry and that I am not an education expert. Clearly there is somethingwrong, but as to the cause of it and the solution that needs correct it, I have foundthat we are all experts.

On the digital version of The Mercuryarticle, I found a list of comments longerthan the story itself. This is often the casewith stories that are the topics of many adrunken conversation or when a story supports people’s cynicism on the government’s failure. The (anonymous) comments are full of “not surprising”, “dismal”,“blind leading the blind” and others questioning whether all teachers are qualifiedto teach any subject.

Thereport doesnotmentionhow manyof these teachers are from previously disadvantaged schools and backgrounds. Iwould speculate that the difficulty of theproblem solving questions in the fourthlevel may be linked to their proficiency inthe English language.

What we need to understand is thatthis is just one study that has detected alongsuspected problem. The study’s authors do not speculate what exactly iscausingtheproblem, onlythatitexists andthat it is scary how we expect these teachers to help pupils grasp the mathematicsthey teach.

This study unfortunately casts a badlight on some teachers who actually understand the subject and are able to convey it.

It is not all bad. I have encountered several teachers who have helped me graspchallenging concepts in mathematics. Thisstory will unfortunately remain anothertalking point which will lead to debates inweeks to come.

Catching the matric mathematics bandwagon

THERE are many who will say that Palestine is notsure what it wants exactly.

Even South Africans have joined in voicing theiropinions.

I suggest religious leaders and religious organisations within the local district should dedicate theirtime, money and efforts in trying to sort out the problemsthatwehave inKwaZuluNatalbeforetheystart

focusing on problems in other countries. It makes me cringe when I read “as citizens of a

peaceloving country...”Who lives in peace in South Africa? Not even those behind high walls, razor wire, elec

tric fences, burglar bars and alarm systems live inpeace — I know I don’t.
