Raiders Continue Early Road Tests at Yale Colgate and Yale meet in football for the 43rd time, with the Bulldogs holding a 28-11-3 series edge. This is the fifth straight year the series has been played, with Colgate winning in 2012 at New Haven and Yale capturing the last three meetings. It’s the best winning streak by either side since Yale claimed seven straight from 1972-89. The series began in 1909, and the only four games not played in New Haven were 1991, 2003, 2013 and 2015. The Raiders are midway through a three-game road swing to begin the 2016 season. Colgate opened with a 33-7 loss at ACC member Syracuse, marking their fourth straight year to start against a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent. The Raiders play next Saturday at No. 2 Richmond. The Spiders began their season two weeks ago with a 37-20 victory at Virginia. Colgate is ranked 23rd this week in three different polls: the FCS Coaches Poll, STATS FCS Poll and Hero Sports Media Poll. Colgate finished 13th in last year’s final FCS Coaches Poll and 17th in the STATS FCS Poll. Dan Hunt in just two seasons as head coach has returned Colgate Football to national prominence. Hunt is 14-13 overall, including a pair of NCAA playoff victories last season, and already stands 9-3 against Patriot League competition. This is Hunt’s 21st season as a member of the Colgate coaching staff, the first 18 of which he served as an assistant under head coach Dick Biddle. The Raiders won seven Patriot League crowns in the Biddle-Hunt Era and advanced all the way to the 2003 NCAA title game. Colgate is the preseason pick of the Patriot League coaches and sports information directors to repeat as conference champion. The Raiders were 6-0 in the Patriot League last year and 9-5 overall en route to two playoff victories and a berth in the NCAA FCS quarterfinals. Fordham, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Bucknell, Lafayette and Georgetown round out the 2016 predicted order of finish. The Raiders return nine starters on offense and eight on defense. Two weeks ago at Syracuse, four Raiders earned their first career starts: TE Nick Martinsen, C Andy Simms, LB Trent Williams and DB Cortney Mimms. • LB Charles Cairnie already has been named to the Hero Sports FCS Defensive Player of the Year Watch List. The senior has turned in tackle career bests in each of his last two games. He posted 15 stops in the opener at Syracuse and had 13 last year at Sam Houston State in the NCAA quarterfinals. Both were game highs.

• P Josh Cerra in his debut as Colgate’s starting punter posted a 40.8-yard average on 10 attempts at Syracuse. His long of 56 in the first quarter rolled dead at the Orange 13. Cerra finished with three punts inside the 20-yard line against zero touchbacks.

• LB Kyle Diener was the choice of the conference coaches and SIDs as Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, and DL Pat Afriyie earned the same honor from College Sports Madness. Both Raider defenders were included on the Hero Sports Preseason All-America Second Team, and Afriyie also picked up the same honor from College Sports Madness.

• Afriyie in two seasons has 14 sacks -- nearly halfway to the Colgate record of 28½ set by Kelly Robinson from 1979-81. Afriyie and fellow D-line returnees Brett Field and Alex Campbell combined for 25 of Colgate’s Patriot League-leading 36 sacks last season. On offense, Jake Melville compiled 3,625 yards of total offense for the second-highest figure in program history, and Colgate led nation in fewest passes had intercepted with two. Tailback James Holland led the Raiders and finished seventh nationally with 16 TDs and 96 points.

• Endicott’s Maine-Endwell All-Star baseball team that won the Little League World Series has a Colgate connection. Assistant coach Joe Hopko ‘91 lettered three seasons for the Raiders.

• Colgate’s 2015 Patriot League crown was the eighth in program history, and the Raiders are the only Patriot League team to win multiple playoff games in the same year (also 2003 en route to the NCAA championship game). Colgate was the lone team in last year’s playoff field to win twice on the road (at New Hampshire and James Madison).

• Colgate won nine games (9-5) last season for the ninth time in program history. Seven of those wins were consecutive and all by single digits -- 4, 2, 9, 7, 4, 7 and 6.

Syracuse 33COLGATE 7Sept. 2 -- Carrier Dome, Syracuse, N.Y.

Colgate 7 0 0 0 -- 7Syracuse 7 13 6 7 -- 33

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – An early Colgate touchdown was no match for the ACC. The Raiders struck for an opening TD drive and led 7-0 before Syracuse unveiled its new-generation of-fense and won the Central New York matchup, 33-7. Jake Melville hit Owen Rockett for a 19-yard TD on the game’s opening drive. But the Orange defense stiff-ened and limited Colgate’s senior quarterback to just 82 passing yards for the game. Syracuse quarterback Eric Dungey completed 34 of his 40 attempts for 355 yards. Colgate linebackers Charles Cairnie with 15 and Kyle Diener with nine were the game’s tackle leaders. Cairnie’s total was a career high. Colgate’s defense held Syracuse to four field goals to keep the game in hand through three quarters. Colgate scored on the game’s opening possession. They needed help – Syracuse ran into the punter, Josh Cerra, resulting in an initial first down – but Colgate went 75 yards in 12 plays covering 6 minutes. Melville scrambled left and found Owen Rockett for Rockett’s first career TD, a 19-yarder. Syracuse answered with 20 straight points and led 20-7 at intermission.
