Legal Clinic

2016 marked our legal clinic’s 5-year partnership with attorneys from Houston Volunteer Lawyers, Exxon Mobil, Norton Rose Fulbright and Tahirih Justice Center, providing free legal advice, assistance and representation to shelter residents fleeing violent relationships. Countless lawyers generously volunteer their time at both our

non-residential facility and at our shelter, speaking with survivors about their legal issues.

UT Physicians

Partnering with caregivers from UT Physicians was essential to meeting the health needs of survivors at our shelter. UT Physicians offer on-site health screenings as well as provide access to health care and health insurance.

Working together with dedicated community partners who support our vision of ending domestic and sexual violence, we are proud to have productive working relationships with 90 agencies and institutions. Here we highlight just a few…

Sunnyside Multi Service Center

Collaborating with the City of Houston, we are actively bringing our services to survivors where they live in their community. With offices inside the Multi Service Center, our reach in the Sunny-side Neighborhood includes community education, counseling and advocacy.

HISD Shelter School

Children in our shelter receive K-5 education in coordination with the Houston Independent School District. This onsite classroom provides a safe and secure environment for learning.

There are three key messages that we want all survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault to hear – it is not your fault; you are not alone; help is available. As we work to support survivors in building lives free from violence and to prevent violence before it ever starts, we find strength in the knowledge that we are not alone in those efforts. Knowing that others share our

commitment to ending violence and are willing to engage their resources and talents with us to achieve that shared vision strengthens our resolve and enhances our results. Our numerous collaborative efforts with community partners mean that we can achieve greater impact.

In this annual report, we highlight just a few of the valuable collaborative endeavors in which we engaged during 2016. Whether mentioned here or not, we are grateful to all of the partners who work with us to deliver on our mission. We are also excited that the list of partners continues to grow as does the variety of ways we discover to work together to end domestic and sexual violence, for individuals and across our community.

To all who make our work possible and powerful through your investments of time, talent and treasure, please accept our heart-felt thanks. We can’t tell you how wonderful it feels to know that we are not alone and that your help is available!

COMING TOGETHER THROUGH OUR COLLABORATIONSOUR MISSION

CREATING CHANGE THROUGH OUR REACH

FROM OUR LEADERS 2016 FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS

Houston Police Department

Our decades of partnership with the Houston Police Department (HPD) includes an unprecedented training of all 5,200 men and women in the department on how to effectively respond to domestic violence and sexual assault survivors. In addition, HPD’s Special Victims Division Officers visit our non-residential campus weekly, answering clients’ questions and taking reports.

Primary Prevention in Local Schools

Teaming up with Raul Yzaguirre School for Success, YES Prep West and KIPP Houston High School, our educators work with youth, teaching them how to stop the violence before it happens. As adult allies, we create safe spaces to talk about power, gender roles, healthy relationships and interpersonal skills.

Domestic Violence Coordinated Access System

Partnering with a number of domestic violence agencies as well as the Houston/Harris County Continuum of Care, a coordinated access system helps connect survivors to available housing resources while documenting the need for additional low-income housing.

Children’s Assessment Center

Working in a multidisciplinary team approach with the Children’s Assessment Center (CAC), our Children’s Court Services team is committed to coordinate with CAC and other partner agencies to support and secure resources for child sexual assault cases.

The Houston Area Women's Center helps individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence in their efforts to move their lives forward. We provide shelter, counseling and advocacy to support them in building lives free from the effects of violence. We seek social change to end domestic and sexual violence through community awareness and education. Our services are confidential and available to everyone.
