#7 LETTERS OF REC - REFERENCES

• What for?• References required for a job, admissions to a college, honors programs, and scholarships

• Who to choose?• Ask someone who knows you well – typically a teacher who taught you, often in a core subject. • Your relationship to the reference is important. Do they know you well and like you?

• When to ask?• Ask in person• Ask at least 2-3 weeks prior request, be clear about the deadline• Complete a form to assist your teacher, counselor, coach - https://bit.ly/2gzA9xJ

• What is written about? • Grades/rigor of coursework• Leadership on and off campus• Community service• Employment, responsibilities• What makes you stand out, hardship and perseverance

Colleges have shared that the “letter of recommendation” is valued more than class rank and even your essays. It can be the tie breaker between you and another student.
