We commend you on your outstanding academic accomplishments thus far and welcome you to one of the top public universities in the nation. As a student in the College of Liberal Arts, you will receive a well-rounded, diverse education and learn from some of the world’s most esteemed scholars who teach at Texas A&M University. The College of Liberal Arts emphasizes high-impact education. With our goals of conducting research that matters, offering transformational learning, creating understanding among people, and engaging with our communities, our college aims to provide each student with a set of academic skills we consider essential for continuing to learn for a lifetime. Among these vital skills are the ability to think critically and deeply, excel at written and spoken communication, solve problems creatively in diverse settings, and practice engaged and responsible global citizenship. In order to prepare you to address global issues and gain knowledge of the world outside of the U.S., the College of Liberal Arts encourages study abroad for all students, and we pledge to do our best to provide support for your global education. We recognize that you and your family are making a significant investment in your future by supporting your college education. You might not know it from the popular press, but recent reports demonstrate that during peak earning years in an individual’s career, liberal arts graduates actually earn more, on average, than students in majors we think of as more lucrative. Unemployment rates are low for liberal arts graduates, and they decline over time. Finally, 93% of employers say that prospective employees’ ability to think critically, communicate effectively, and solve complex problems is actually more important than their undergraduate major. In other worlds, your liberal arts education will prepare you for a lifetime of engaged employment as well as satisfying personal growth. As you embark on this new phase of your academic journey, we remain fully committed to providing ample opportunities for your success: developing your analytical thinking abilities, connecting you with distinguished faculty, and exposing you to diverse cultures and topics. In turn, if you make a commitment to getting the most out of your education, you will achieve more during your college career --and beyond it-- than you ever thought possible. Welcome to the College of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University! We look forward to helping you in your path to lifelong success. Good luck and Gig ‘em, Pamela R. COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS OFFICE OF THE DEAN

WHY SHOULD I GO SEE A COLLEGE ADVISOR? The Undergraduate Programs Office can assist with issues that need approval of the Dean or can refer you to the appropriate resources. They act on behalf of the Dean to deal with academic affairs, college and university requirements, and scholastic honors. Consult a college advisor for help with the following:

• Processing of requests for double majors and double degrees • Graduation problems • Petitions regarding college and university policies, procedures, and

requirements • Referrals to support services for personal or academic difficulties • Rescheduling a final exam when you have three exams in a single day • Semester or cumulative academic probation • Withdrawal from the University

Academic Advising appointments can be made by contacting our office at 979.845.5143 or by visiting the following website: www.swan.tamu.edu/la-upo. Advisors are located in 202 Richard Coke Building.

Office hours: M-F 9-11:30 a.m. (by appointment only) or 1:15-3:30 p.m. (walk-ins).

COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS OFFICE OF THE DEAN

WHY SHOULD I GO SEE MY DEPARTMENTAL ADVISOR? Your departmental advisor will be the most help with your major. They know the faculty, department's courses, and special opportunities offered by the department for undergraduates. They can ensure that your schedule meets the requirements of your degree plan. Additionally, they can assist you with the following:

• Selecting courses before you register each semester • Declaring your minor field of study • Changes of major • Q-dropping a course • Substituting courses transferred "by title" into your degree program • Locating general information about career opportunities in your major • Writing recommendations for awards, prospective employers,

graduate and professional schools

COMMIT TO STUDY ABROAD

The College of Liberal Arts encourages all students to study abroad, and consider the experience an integral part of their undergraduate studies and career preparation.

Study abroad can be affordable. Financial aid often applies, and there are many scholarships. The College of Liberal Arts dedicates $300,000 annually toward study abroad scholarships for our majors.

Study abroad is career preparation. Globalization demands a workforce knowlegable of other countries and cultures. An international experience develops global perspectives and the marketable skills employers desire.

The programs we create, the providers with whom we affiliate, and the destinations which students select, are all highly scrutinized to ensuresafety and quality.

Study abroad will not delay graduation. There is no difference in time to degree between A&M students who study abroad and those who remain on campus.
