Calling all OSU Chican@/Latin@ students! Check out this new course being offered through the school of New Media Communications! NMC 425: Latinos in the Media Beyond Hot Tamales and Pinches Criminales – Contesting, Resisting, and Rewriting Representations of Latinos in the U.S. Today Watch movies and shows that you love, visit your favorite blogs and social media sites, and discover new ones! Engage with your community! Be inspired by fellow world-changing Latin@s! Course Description: Despite the fact that Latinos are the second largest ethnic group in the U.S., and the largest ethnic minority, we/they are consistently underrepresented in all forms of media – from television programming, to Hollywood, to print media and beyond. Furthermore, those representations that do exist conform to a very narrow set of roles and topics. As Latinos come to represent a greater portion of the purchasing and voting public, media producers are looking for innovative ways to attract their attention; meanwhile, the number of Latinos at all levels of media production is increasing, if slowly. In this class, we will examine the sociohistorical context for such underrepresentation, look at the narrow roles and issues ascribed to Latinos in mainstream media sources, and explore the ways in which media moguls attempt to attract Latino consumers, while Latino filmmakers, actors, and writers are rewriting traditional scripts to create a vibrant, multifaceted picture of Latinos in the U.S. today.
