Big Thank You from the Wellbeing Team On behalf of the Student Well-Being Team, a huge thank-you to the families who have kindly donated school uniforms and books back to the College for us to be able to pass on to other students in 2014. This year in particular has been an overwhelming response of generosity from the school community. Greatly appreciated.

ONTEC Presentations

Ms van den Heuvel was proud to attend the Graduation Ceremony for three of our students who have been participating in the ‘Invigorating’ program. The students have attended the ONTEC facility at Peter Lalor Secondary College every Wednesday afternoon for the last two terms learning basic wood and building skills, and developing their team working and self-management skills. The program has been a joint initiative of the Whittlesea Council, the Hume Whittlesea LLEN, Baseline and Youth Connections, and has been attended by three local Secondary Colleges, including our school. English Language Centre Excursion to Healesville Sanctuary

Last Monday, students in the English Language Centre spent the day at Healesville Sanctuary with Karen Eastlake, Con McGillycuddy and Marilyn Pridmore. There were lots of experiences and beautiful moments on this excursion that I will never forget. I really enjoyed looking out the window at the scenery as we drove through the countryside because I hadn’t seen open spaces like that before. It was very peaceful and very beautiful. Linh Nguyen I was very happy in the bus as we drove through the country. I liked the green fields, grape vines, mountains and valleys. My favourite animal was the dingo but I didn’t like the Tasmanian Devils. I thought they looked like giant mice. Man Pham I liked seeing the koalas very much but I think they have a funny face. Zihang Chen We were very lucky because we saw the Koalas moving in the trees. We were so happy; we took lots of photos and laughed a lot. Shenzhou Zhang When we got off the bus at Healesville the cicadas were making a lot of noise and we could hear them all day as we walked around. Wen Sun My favourite animal was the kangaroo but I thought the koalas were very cute. Tianhan Wu When we were told we were going on an excursion I was so excited I wanted to cheer. I really enjoyed the lovely drive to Healesville and when we arrived I jumped off the bus and took a deep breath of the beautiful fresh air. We had a lesson in the Discovery Centre and had the opportunity to touch a python and a lizard. How cool was that! Yonglin Feng Marilyn said we couldn’t sleep on the bus because we had to look out the window at the scenery, but in fact I slept for about 40 minutes and she didn’t find out. I thought walking through Healesville was a bit like walking in a forest. Junming Li I was very lucky because a zoo keeper let me feed a big green parrot. I also touched a snake for the first time, but I didn’t feel any fear. Wenlu Qin On Monday I was so excited I didn’t need anyone to wake me up for school. I was interested in everything at Healesville and I was so lucky because I was allowed to feed a tawny frogmouth. I had to give it a mouse, but it wasn’t yucky. Tianlei Yang It was a good day, nice and sunny and on the way to Healesville we saw some beautiful scenery which is different to where I live in China. I don’t like zoos because I always feel sad that animals have lost their freedom, but I did enjoy seeing the hospital. Yijia Hao I really loved the koala, it was very cute but I was a bit scared of the snake so I didn’t pat it. Mahfam Karamian

Arts Festival - MPSC Art & Design Exhibition 2013

The annual Mill Park Secondary College Art & Design Exhibition 2013 was officially opened on Tuesday 19 November by College Principal Ms Trish Horner at the City of Whittlesea “Great Hall”. She proudly welcomed invited guests, staff, parents and students who were amongst over a hundred people and commented on the outstanding VCE work on display and the calibre of musical performances, live models and performance artists at the exhibition. She congratulated students and staff and encouraged all to enjoy the celebration of the students’ achievements in the visual arts. The exhibition provided the opportunity for students to demonstrate their creative skills, thinking and reflection of the journey and skills and knowledge learnt throughout the year. It was also a time to celebrate their achievements with their teachers, friends, family and the wider community who have been impressed with the quality and highly imaginative work created by the VCE Studio Arts, Visual Communication Design and Media students. The work portrayed themes and thoughts such as identity, family, loss, confusion, abstractions of the natural and urban environment, portraiture and are a great representation of our future artists, designers and photographers. The response to the exhibition has once again been overwhelming and encouraging to students as they have developed self-confidence through the experience and inspired many to continue their creative pursuits in the art and design courses at tertiary level. The Year 10 artwork was displayed in the library and in the Senior campus foyer. It represented artwork created in Media, Painting & Drawing, Ceramics & Sculpture and Graphic Design. The Year 7-9 artwork was also displayed in the library at the Middle Years Campus. It represented artwork created in the Visual Arts, Ceramics & Sculpture, Media and Visual Communication Design classes. A special thank you to the following staff: VCE Studio Arts teacher Aurora De Leucio who was instrumental in putting the VCE exhibition together. VCE Media teacher Vyv Stranieri, Yr10 teacher Jackie Wilson, Middle Years Visual Arts teachers Anita Burum and Luisa Castaldo who undertook the responsibility to set up the display Ingrid Gillis, Catherine Murray and Kylie Wren and Arts Assistant- Wendy Nagel. Dance/Drama Teacher – Shana-Sandra Buriani-Gennai for organising the Drama - performance artists. VCE Design Technology- Fabrics teacher Karen Szitarity for organising the live models, inspiring students to create their contemporary garment designs. Food Technology teacher Chris Usher for the organisation of the catering and Ben Blackley, Tyler McKay and Rachel Caico for assisting with serving on the evening. Design Technology teacher Michael Kneebone for workmanship and organisation of the props for the opening and Colin Zabenko’s great workmanship and patience in transport, setting up and dismantling all of the displays involved in the exhibition. Understanding Gifted Children – Parent and Teacher Evening

Mill Park Secondary College hosted a parent evening on 19 September, specifically suited to members of our community who have children who fall into the ‘gifted or talented’ category. In an effort to bring all members of our learning community together, parents of local primary schools and teachers were invited to come together with members of our own school community in the pursuit of learning more about these children. Hosted in the MYC library, two guest speakers presented their knowledge of current gifted education research and provided advice and suggestions on how to support gifted children through their educational journey. Gail

Byrne presented an excellent discussion on ‘The Well-Rounded Child’ and after a short break that involved conversation and refreshments, Amanda Sironic spoke on the topic of ‘Perfectionism’. Both experts in the psychology field, these ladies provided insightful and highly beneficial information into how gifted children behave and what parents and teachers can do to support them during a sometimes problematic process. Enormous thanks to all members of our community who attended the evening from parents of our current SEAL students, to parents of gifted students from our local primary schools, to the dedicated staff who attended and made themselves available for discussion and SEAL girls

from 8BR who greeted parents and assisted all evening. Special thanks to Valerie McGowan who assisted with refreshments and the organisation of the library. Gail Byrne’s contact details: [email protected] Leesa Mereos SEAL and Enrichment Coordinator

Athletics - Northern Zone

Mill Park Secondary College had nineteen students make it through to the Northern Zone Athletics day which was held on Thursday September 12 at Meadowglen Athletics Track. The weather was unkind and the hurdles events were postponed to later that week but all students participated to their best of their ability and four students managed to be placed first and qualify for State Athletics. Congratulations to all students who competed in difficult conditions throughout the day!

State Athletics

State Athletics were held at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park on Tuesday October 22. In a fantastic performance Emerson Shiel broke the record with a time of 14.46 for the 15 years boys’ hurdles and won a gold medal by a 100th of a second. Later in the day Larissa Cullen competed in her 3rd event which was girls’ Long Jump and with a great jump of 5.03m managed a silver medal. She had also competed in Discus and Javelin (4th place). Michael Sega qualified in the boys’ 100m final and Jack Rose in the boys’ Triple Jump. A fantastic achievement. Well Done to all M.P.S.C. representatives!!!

All Schools’ Championship

Four of Mill Park Secondary College’s students competed in the Victorian All Schools’ Championship held at Lakeside Stadium with some great results. Larissa Cullen won a gold medal in the girls’ u16’s Triple Jump qualifying her for the Victorian team in

the Australian All School Championships to be held in Townsville on 6-8 December this year. Larissa also came 4th in the girls’ u16’s Long Jump. Her younger brother, Luke Cullen, competed and came 4th in the boys’ u14’s Javelin, 8th in the boys’ u14’s Discus and also 10th in the boys’ u14’s Shot Put. Emerson Shiel competed on the day finishing 3rd in the boys u15’s 100m hurdles, while Year 7 student Emily McDonough finished 13th in the girls’ u14’s Javelin, 10th in the girls’ u14’s Discus and 8th in the girls’ u14’s Shot Put. Congratulations to these students on representing Mill Park Secondary College so well and good luck in the upcoming carnival to Larissa. Keep up the good work and see you all next year.

Year 9 Elective - Money Matters Money Matters is a Year 9 Elective which develops and strengthens financial literacy skills. This term the students participated in the ASX Sharemarket Game and in a marketing excursion to the local supermarket. Congratulations to Iman El-Mohammad for making the most profit in the ASX Game and to Diana Radevski and Adrian Medved for taking second and third places. The class had two teachers during November with Ms Rachel Harding, a Pre-Service Teacher from La Trobe University, delivering the Small Business Unit. Students learnt about the 4 P’s of Marketing; Price, Promotion, Product and Place.

Ms Jaclyn Curnow, Year 9 Money Matters Teacher.

As part of our Money Matters class, we participated in the ASX Sharemarket Game. We began our game with $50,000 – which unfortunately was just virtual money – and we had to purchase shares from a variety of companies. For my portfolio I mainly purchased shares from the mining company, Rio Tinto. I had over $53, 000 at the end of the game, a result of receiving a significant amount of dividends. I learnt from playing the game that shares are a long-term investment and can have their risks. I am more aware of how shares work and am eager to play again next year. Iman El-Mohammad, 9AS. I really enjoyed going to Woolworths on Thursday 21 November. After conducting our research it was really good to see how our products were advertised in-store and see how the shops advertised the products they sold. While we were there, we observed two really good examples of advertising. The first was a woman walking around with a tray, offering cans of Lipton Ice-Tea to customers. The second advertising example was a company representative with tarts from Bakers’ Delight. The excursion was a really good experience and supported our learning about advertising! Nicholas Bega, 9AS.

MYC End of Year Music Night On Monday 25 November the Middle Years Campus held our annual End of Year Concert. This event was well supported by staff, students, parents & friends and was held in the MYC library surrounded by some wonderful visual art work. Everyone performed very well and I'm sure the audience enjoyed the evening. Thanks to the MYC Instrumental music staff for their fantastic efforts preparing and developing our students: Radha Claridge, Andrew Laveglia, Serge deLeucio, Peter Simondson, Katie Weston and Magot Vigliotti. On behalf of the Music department. Wendy Nagel

Kool Skools Victorian Awards On Saturday 23 November, I had the privilege of representing the college at the Victorian Kool Skools Recording Project Awards. Nazzereene Taleb from Year 11 closed the evening by performing her original song "My Love". Nazzereene performed beautifully and won the award for 'Best R&B Track'. Our VCE Supaband won 'Best Cover' for their version of "Spain". They also received a second nomination in the same category. VCE band "Out of Order' received a nomination for 'Best Mainstream Track featuring a female vocalist' and our College was nominated for "Koolest Skool". These are wonderful acknowledgements of the music program and our students achievements. Congratulations to all students involved in this year's recording project. They have all done very well. MYC End Of Year Tests/Exams The Middle Year’s Campus introduced trial end of year tests and exams during Week 6 of Term 4 for Years 7 – 9. This initiative was introduced with the intention of developing improved study skills and test taking techniques in our students. This has been a highly successful initiative, with many long term benefits. The preparation for a staggered timetable and collaboratively produced tests were challenging tasks but staff were rewarded with the impressive attitude from our students and their highly supportive parents. Behaviour was excellent, attendance was great and our campus was at times extremely quiet as students practised their test taking skills and applied what they had learned. The results of these tests will not be published in the 2013 end of year reports but teachers have been spending class time reviewing exam content. All students will be made aware of their results and will have the opportunity to discuss strategies for improved results in the future. Parents/guardians are encouraged to discuss their child’s results with them and to encourage this as a positive experience in preparation for further education. End of year tests (exams) will now form an annual part of student assessment. Exam results will be made part of the 2014 reporting process which incorporates a variety of formative and summative assessment methods. Thanks to all staff, students and parents who worked together to support this initiative in the pursuit of learning excellence. Mrs Leesa Mereos MY Curriculum Innovation
