Recent Zimboyz Performance at Wellesley

Front flip, backflip somersaults everywhere. We saw the Zimboys. The event was in the gigantic school hall after morning tea break. I had first seen that captivating setup of chairs, hoops and other useful household objects when I was walking back to class after morning tea. I knew we were going to a show but I had not been given any hints on what it was about. I had no idea that I was about to witness such a surreal performance. When the men came on I was suddenly hooked. They introduced themselves as Vos and Abiy. As soon as they started it was an instant hit with me and everyone else. Their first act I think was a fabulous one. Those flips and roly-polys were tricks they could do anywhere. One of the jumps Vos did was actually one from Star Wars that Darth Maul does in The Phantom Menace. Next they did an act with two hoops, one on top of the other. The feats they did were tremendously dangerous. The skipping rope act was next and they brought Mr Girvan out to give them a hand. This was my favourite thing of the show. They did back flips and front flips all over the place while still skipping. For their final act they had one small table. Abiy asked Vos to stand on the table and smile. Then Abiy came up from behind Vos and asked him to put a chair on top of the table. This happened four times and they ended the show with Vos doing a handstand on the four chairs on top of the table. The show was awesome and I loved it. By Alexander Heine-Sheldrake

Wellesley Waiting Lists

At this time of year we are trying to finalise our school roll for next year. Families with sons on our waiting list are ringing in wondering whether their child will have a place. If you are intending to transfer to another area or your son will not be attending Wellesley next year for whatever reason, please let myself or my Personal Assistant (Karen Reid) know as soon as possible. Even let us know if there is a reasonable possibility that you won’t be here next year, as it helps us with our planning. Waiting lists are fickle and when people hear that schools have waiting lists they sometimes do not even bother enquiring. If friends show an interest in Wellesley, encourage them to plan ahead and pre-enrol so they have their options covered. It is worth knowing, that although we have three main entry levels into Wellesley, namely Year 1, Year 4 and Year 7, places do periodically come up at the other year levels.

Uniform and Presentation

It is a good habit for the boys to polish their shoes weekly or as they become dirty. Shoelaces need replacing from time to time if they become frayed or too short to fit all the holes in the shoes. Congratulations to the boys for the care and consideration shown in changing into their slippers at the appropriate place for the winter terms. It is a bit of a nuisance for the boys taking shoes on and off as they make the transition from the grounds to the interior, but it does build respect and care for the boys’ ‘home away from home’.

A few boys are getting a bit ‘shaggy’ and need a haircut. Some have been prompted to do this by staff but ideally the prompts need to come from home. We want to encourage the boys to present themselves in a clean and tidy fashion, taking pride in their uniform and their school. Winter essentials at the uniform shop Beanies: $15 Winter shirts $50 - $60 depending on required size Wellesley scarf $35 These uniform items are not compulsory, but ideal for keeping winter chills away. From the beginning of Term 3, the shop will be selling stationery items. If your boys require pens, pencils, rubbers or rulers, these items can be purchased at the uniform shop.

Grandparents’ and Friends’ Day Our special afternoon is coming up on Friday 18th September at 1.00pm. Invitations will go out early in the Term but it may pay to give the boys’ intended guest(s) some prior warning, as often people travel from out of town and need to book flights etc.

Secondary School Scholarships

At this time of year many independent and integrated secondary schools (even some state boarding schools such as Nelson College) are gearing up for the 2016 Year 9 scholarship tests. Some have already started. I encourage any Year 8 parents who wish their son to try for one or more of these scholarships to approach the particular school(s) for the appropriate information. Over the years a number of Wellesley boys have won such scholarships.

Lunchtime Chess Lessons

Term 1 Citizenship Awards All the children in the school anonymously voted for the two boys in their class whom they respected most for their integrity and caring behaviour towards their classmates. The following boys gained the most votes. Many were veryclose behind and over the year I am sure we will see a good cross-section of names.

Wellesley has selected rugby and football teams to billet and play The Southport School from the Gold Coast in Australia next week. The boys travelling to the South Island for the sports trip next term received the information last week. The following boys were named first team Captains for 2015: Rugby – George Murray Football – Jacob Madigan Hockey – Alexi Zangouropoulos and Jim Lockwood (co-captains) Wellesley entered four teams in the Year 5/6 Zone Football tournament in Week 3. The boys played well in two very competitive sections. Year 3 and 4 basketball teams are well into their second competition for the year. The Globetrotters and Breakers are building on their first term experience. Four Year 5/6 and five Year 7/8 basketball teams are playing in Karori Recreational Centre and Hutt Walter Nash leagues. All teams are developing their skills in a competitive environment. Thank you to parents who are managing and coaching teams. The two Waterpolo teams have been training and playing on Wednesdays this term. The ‘A’ team has had three wins and one loss. The ‘B’ team has had one win from their four games. The competition continues into next term after the holidays. The Underwater Hockey team finished second in the May tournament. It was a very close final and the boys did well considering they had to play extra time in the semi final. Sam Paviour-Smith was awarded the Wellesley MVP. The next tournament is on Saturday 27 June and a team has been entered. The Senior Multi Sports boys have been to the Hutt Indoor Sports Centre, golf driving range/mini putt course and H2O Extreme. They have had games at school and have other planned trips as part of their programme. The main PE focus in the early part of the term was on large ball and hockey skills. The boys have been encouraged to practice the skills relevant to their team sports at home to further improve their skill base. The Junior School classes have been involved in weekly Kiwi Sport football sessions with Capital Football supplied coaches. The boys have enjoyed and benefitted from these sessions. Josh Harvey-Green, Tyler Weyburne, Ari Maling and Thomas Stevenson qualified for the Inter-Zone Cross Country by finishing in the top ten at the Zone event earlier in the term. The top ten runners from our school event have direct entry into the Inter-Zone event which takes place this week.

Hutt STEMM Schools Challenge

(Photos on front page)

Challenge On Thursday 4th June, a team of four Senior boys competed against other Hutt Valley schools in the first Hutt STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Manufacturing) Schools Challenge. Andrew Sutcliffe, Toby Marks, Max Abbot and Sam Paviour-Smith competed in four rounds of science and mathematics based questions. The fifth round consisted of a series of practical challenges such as making a cup of water as close to 37 degrees without using a thermometer and cutting a length of paper to as close as 1 metre as possible without any measuring devices. The scoring was very close after every round but in the final count up, the boys won by three points. Well done, a really great effort and a fun morning.

Science this Term

From rocks to robots, chickens to creeks, it has been a very busy term in the science and technology room. The junior syndicate have all been having lots of hands on sessions and have been exploring and investigating sound, heat, light and colour and the water cycle. Year Four have taken their learning further and explored some new concepts about magnetism. In Year Five, the classes have been studying ‘Changing Landforms’ in their classroom and as part of their unit, they explored the effects of wind and rain using models in the science room. All

of the Year Six classes have had lots of fun with a unit on electricity. They’ve investigated constructing different circuits, static electricity and even had a go at making their own torch. The Year Seven’s were lucky to have a Forensic Scientist come and talk to them from the ESR. This launched their Forensics unit and the boys learnt all about fingerprinting, chromatography, fibres and fabrics and the importance of working carefully and systematically when solving a crime. This ended the unit with a fun ‘Whodunnit?’ challenge.

Senior syndicate classes have also participated in some robotics and are in the middle of a series of technology challenges involving construction, forces and circuits. A number of classes got to listen to Mike Ross, a parent who spends some of his time travelling around the world filming erupting volcanoes. The boys thoroughly enjoyed listening to him and watching some of his footage so we’re planning on having him back next term to share his knowledge and passion with more of our classes. We’ve also had a film crew in and a group of boys got to experience what it’s like to be part of a film. As part of my study, the course has been nominated for a Prime Ministers Excellence in Education Award and we were asked if we wouldn’t mind having a science lesson filmed. The first group of students have also attended a robotics session at The Mindlab in Petone. It was great fun and in the near future more students will get to experience some of the digital technology on offer there. They also offer an exciting school holiday programme. More details are on their website http://themindlab.com/workshop/school-holidays-wellington/. The science club have also had a number of interesting lunch time sessions including a parent coming in to talk about light, a visit from a water monitoring scientist from the GWRC who assessed our stream, a session exploring magnification using our new microscopes and a visit from the educator at GNS who brought along the most amazing collection of rocks and fossils. In the last week of this term we’re looking forward to a parent bringing in her chickens!

Scholarship Campaign Update

After announcing this exciting initiative at the Centenary last year, the Foundation has been busy quietly raising funds for the Promising Futures for Boys scholarship campaign. This has been mainly done through discrete conversations with old boys and former parents. We are very pleased with the progress to date and have raised just over $300,000. This includes a major gift from one of the Campaign's Patrons

(old boy and Dux in 1943) Sir John Todd. As a result, we are delighted to announce a new scholarship will be named after Sir John starting in 2017. We also have the generous pledge of an ongoing annual scholarship from another old boy. Thank you to all of our supporters and donors to date, whose generosity and vision in Wellesley's future will not only transform the lives of boys who might not otherwise be able to attend Wellesley, but will also support the school. Significant momentum has been achieved by Warren and Margie and our team of Campaign volunteers with the platform for future fundraising well established. Whilst Warren will step down now as Campaign Chair, we are delighted that he will continue to support Promising Futures for Boys in his role as Patron of the Campaign. We wish him all the best and look forward to his involvement with Foundation events in the future. We will keep you updated with progress over the next few months and will be in touch with how you can also be a part of Promising Futures for Boys. Thanks - The Campaign team

Social Media

Social Media plays a significant part of our online lives for many of us – the school Facebook page and Twitter feed are a good source of up to date information about school events. We have noticed an upsurge in children having Instagram and Facebook accounts. While we can’t control what our students do in their leisure time, it’s important to note that Facebook, Instagram and Twitter clearly require children to be 13 years and over before they can sign up. It is important that our children learn to use social media thoughtfully and carefully, and have the maturity to deal with being part of an online forum. Our digital citizenship code suggests this (http://wellesley.ultranet.school.nz/WebSpace/405/) and there is plenty of information for parents on these sites: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/social-media/what-age-should-my-kids-be-before-i-let-them-use-instagram-facebook-and-other-social http://www.netsafe.org.nz/ Ross Hampton

Dr Sven Hansen

7 Keys to Resilience On Thursday 25 June at 6.30pm, Dr Sven Hansen will provide an entertaining, thought provoking and practical talk on Resilience at Wellesley College, Days Bay, Eastbourne. Dr Sven is the founder of the Resilience Institute - http://www.resiliencei.com. Participants will leave with a clear understanding of the importance of resilience as Dr Sven will focus on the role of parenting and will define a handful of key practices that can reduce distress, improve wellbeing and support learning.

The heart of Resilience is the ability to remain calm, effective and responsive in challenging moments. Resilient people learn how to show bounce, courage, creativity and connection. To do this well requires some understanding of our inner resources and the practices of mastering our physical, emotional and cognitive being.

1. Understand Resilience: Bounce, Courage, Creativity & Connection 2. Get brilliant at Bounce Back – and stay buoyant 3. Tactical calm – techniques to be calm and present 4. Lifestyle non-negotiables – sleep, exercise & food 5. Mastering emotion – building EQ and connection 6. Training the mind – attention and effectiveness

The session organized by Wellesley Parents Association will provide a short workbook to cover the key points, focus dialogue and provide references for further reading and follow-up. Dr Sven will bring a set of books for those who might like to purchase more detail. Everyone is welcome and tickets can be purchased via Eventfinda here - http://www.eventfinder.co.nz/2015/resilience-dr-sven-hansen-keys-to-resilience/wellington Refreshments will be served following the talk. Doors open at 6pm for a 6:30pm start. We look forward to welcoming you.

A Message from Chilton St James School - Road Safety Around School

The School Patrol team appreciates drivers who are considerate and slow down to allow the signs to be extended for students to cross roads. We have two very busy roads to patrol but with everyone’s support, we want to make the areas around our School accident free. Safety is everyone’s responsibility and parents can support us by obeying New Zealand traffic laws and showing consideration. Thank you for your support.

Drivers should observe the 40kmph displayed when students are arriving or leaving the School.

The speed limit passing stationary school buses is 20kmph.

Stopping is not permitted on broken yellow lines for any reason (it also obstructs the vision of students on patrol and endangers students crossing). There are short-term parks near the School but parking a little further away eases congestion and is safer.

Please cross at the crossing. While as an adult you may feel you can cross safely without using the crossing, it would be helpful if you set a positive example. It is hazardous for other drivers to have buses, a crossing and then people standing in the middle of the road trying to cross. It is very dangerous to dart out from between buses or cars.

U-turns are risky – please drive around the block instead. Parking on the south side of Waterloo Road at the end of the bus parks (on the legal short term parks) can be dangerous and you can at times be blocked in.

Do not park or drop off students on the bus zones.

Remember young children (and even older ones) can be very impulsive. Young children in particular cannot judge the speed of traffic nor is their peripheral vision as well developed.

Adult road users need to be alert at all times but even more so near the School
