Children’s Literature National Competition Congratulations are due to our Kids’ Lit Quiz Team who placed a creditable 5th equal in the New Zealand Final held at The National Library on 10th June. Our team of Callum Benfell, Dominic Coffin, George Lethbridge and Jesse Richardson faced five rounds of thirteen questions each on Authors, Titles, Book Beginnings, Picture Books and Mythical Beasts. The Quizmaster read the questions, which started out obscure and the further he read the answers became more obvious. It is a fine line between buzzing in too early and losing one point and waiting to answer correctly and gaining two points. Our boys did a wonderful job and were the top placed all-boy team. Science Exhibition

On Wednesday 2

nd of July at 7.00pm we will be having a Science Evening celebrating science exhibitions

completed by the boys. It is rather special because: 1. The winners of our own science exhibition will be announced and prizes awarded. (Guest Judge: Colin Walker, past Science Advisor) 2. Our guest speaker is Megan Howard, who is the Innovation Manager at J.H. Whittaker and Sons Ltd, NZ’s largest chocolate manufacturer. Megan studied a Bachelor of Science at Massey University and a Masters in Food Science at Oxford Brookes, UK. It is Megan’s job to develop all new products from concept to launch. It is an extremely varied job that involves formulation development, process engineering, sensory analysis and commercial acumen. She will take your taste buds on a journey and show you the highly creative side of science that will leave you salivating. Megan is the sister of current Year 6 teacher Kate Sinclair. The formalities will begin with our school choir singing at 7.00pm, so it is important the boys are seated on time. After these proceedings, which I expect will last about 30-40 minutes, the parents, boys and any other interested parties will have time to view the exhibits. Our Junior School will have a viewing time from after the hall opening although Junior families are also welcome on the evening.

The Iconic Biennial Wellesley Gala

Over the years the Wellesley Gala has become a regular feature on the Wellington calendar and to be totally upfront, it requires excellent organisation and a real team effort. Our last lead conveners did an amazing job in 2013 and will be available for giving historical information feedback. On-going file information is also available. I encourage anyone who would like to consider becoming the lead convener, or who would be prepared to work in partnership with someone else as shared lead convener, to contact me so we can set up a time to meet and go over all of the above in more detail before they make any commitment. I do appeal to anyone who may like to consider the role to come forward (please contact me by phone or email as per contacts below). We are about 18 months away from the Gala so now is a good time to start thinking ahead. I look forward to hearing from you and many thanks for your consideration.

Chinese Visitors

Once again this term we had a number of Chinese educators and their hosts visit us. They see our school as a key Wellington school highlighting ‘best practice’. They are always so enthusiastic and this time issued an invitation to visit them in China.

Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Afternoon (Thursday July 3 at 1.00pm) This is a very special occasion and it always attracts a large turnout. We request that everyone be seated by 12.50pm. The assembly will finish at about 1.45 pm followed by a tour of the school and afternoon tea. As per previous information, we are hoping families can provide food to assist us with the catering. Years 1-6 are asked to provide cake, biscuits or loaf (to be sliced at school); Year 7-8 sandwiches (to be sliced here). These should go to the Old Library on the day please. Please note that the food provided is for our guests. We request the boys have to exercise self control and leave the food alone. NB — If your son is going home with you or a grandparent or friend, please let his teacher know about the change of travel arrangement.

Uniform Shop

Cold mornings and late afternoons have become prevalent in the last term. I have beanies ($15) and scarves ($35) in the shop. They are a good option to keep nice and snug. They also look smart with the uniform during the winter season. Winter shirts are also available ranging in price depending on size from $50-$60. Tracksuits are still a smart option priced @ $175. I can order larger sizes if required. TEDDY BEAR ALERT We are looking for a sewer who has the patience to make the uniform for the Wellesley Bear. At this stage we have one parent who is helping us, and she is finding it quite time consuming. If you are able to help lessen the load, it would be so appreciated. We need as many Wellesley Bears as we can manage for the Centenary celebrations. Please contact Fiona in the Uniform Shop: 562 8030 extn. 808. Term 2 Citizenship Awards All the children in the school anonymously voted for the two boys in their class whom they respected most for their integrity and caring behaviour towards their class mates. The following boys gained the most votes. Many were very close behind and over the year I am sure we will see a good cross section of names.

World Vision

The boys who completed the 20/40 hour famine have done fantastically well. Just imagine what a difference that will make to so many impoverished people’s lives! Thank you to all the families supporting this charity and especially to the boys who made the effort to complete the famine. Thank you also to Veronica Stevens who coordinated the event at Wellesley, as it certainly takes a lot of organisation. We will celebrate the amount raised once we have the final tally.

Visual Arts

We have been working with clay this term. This is to encourage the boys to think about sculpture and its place in the environment. With the clay we learn technique and then apply the skills to the set topic. The discussion around the topic is intended to inspire and provoke so the work has meaning. 'Titan', for example, was chosen in response to a newspaper story of the discovery of Titanosaurus bones in Patagonia. The boys came up with many items around titan\ huge after we discussed the origin of words. A group of year eight boys did two excellent murals for the Hutt Council around the theme ' What we love about the Hutt'. The one below [ image] shows a leaf man pouring pure water back in to the Hutt River. It is a highly original idea which they came up with. The kiwi image shows the bird waiting to come back to the valley. It is telling us to care for what we have. Saint Michaels hosted our boys to a Samoan day. We had helped them with their mural last term and this reciprocal hosting and sharing fosters friendship and understanding with a diverse cultural mix.

World Refugee Day was celebrated by us in hosting 15 refugee children from countries as diverse as Iraq, Jordan, Columbia, Sudan and Myanmar. Our boys and these children worked on a painting in which they were wrapped in a cloak which depicted their life experiences. We had many parents helping and that made for a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Young Leaders’ Day

On Monday 26 May, four Senior boys, Hamish Hutton, Callum Hancock, Joseph Hewson and Paul McDonald went to NYLD (National Young Leaders’ Day). At the NYLD many people came to talk to us about becoming a leader and inspirational things that they had done. All of the speakers spoke well, about different topics and interesting

Refugee day visitors. Niko enjoying the lovely cake made by Maria Pope

subjects. The over all topic was 3D and so we got a pair of 3D glasses in the little pack we were given. We used these glasses to watch images on the screen they had up. NYLD was very interesting and I hope I can go back again soon. Paul McDonald

On Friday 20 June the Wellesley Orchestra enjoyed the opportunity to experience being part of a really big orchestra – 135 students in fact. We all gathered at Tawa Intermediate School which kindly hosted everyone for the very first Wellington Primary Schools’ Orchestra Festival. It was a long day but a great opportunity for the boys to make music with others their own age, and to feel what it’s like to be part of ‘real’ orchestra. Congratulations to the boys for all their hard work getting six pieces ready for this festival in such a short period of time, and to parents for their support with practice at home. Special thanks to Andre Paris (woodwind tutor and Wellesley orchestra conductor) and Jenni Champion (violin tutor) for their time on the day, and to all the parents who helped with transport and stayed with the boys for the day. Your support was very much appreciated! (See the Wellesley orchestra blog on the webpage for a few photos from the day). Our fabulous singing tutor Stephanie Paris is leaving us at the end of this term, to have her baby. Stephanie has been a fantastic singing tutor, able to instill skill, confidence and a love of singing in all her students. She will be missed. We are lucky to be able to welcome back a previous and also very talented vocal tutor, Sarah Lineham who also left to have a baby! Sarah will pick up Stephanie’s students and continue with lessons on Fridays.

Choir Report by TJ Shirtcliffe On the 20th of June 2014 at 10:30 the Wellesley College Choir departed from Wellesley College setting off to QMC for our choir exchange. When we got to QMC we went straight into a workshop practising for our performance to the middle and senior school of Queen Margaret and some of the Wellesley parents. During the choir performance both choirs did two songs together and two songs of their own. The songs that Wellesley sang were Cantar, a Spanish song and Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel. The songs that the choirs sang together were Swing Low and Wade in The Water. Over all the choir exchange was a success and both of the choirs enjoyed it thoroughly. See photos below and on page 6.

PE/Sport A 30 strong middle school Cross Country team ran in their Zone event at Boulcott School and neighbouring golf course. Wellesley had nine boys qualify for the Inter-Zone event with six of them in the Year 6 section. A depleted Year 7 and 8 boys team performed well in their Zone event at Trentham Memorial Park with five boys making it directly through to the regional event this week. Wellesley hosted six rugby, hockey and football teams from St Mark’s in Week 5. Year 5/6 Colts and senior teams were dominant in the majority of the games. The annual Raroa Intermediate senior fixture was played on a beautiful day. The 2

nd XV gelled well in their first

full game together and came out on top. The 1st XV enjoyed the challenge of tougher opposition and won

comfortably. The long unbeaten run of the 1st XI Football team came to an end at the hands of a very good Raroa

team. The Scots College fixture was keenly contested again recently. Scots hosted the Senior teams while Wellesley hosted the Year 5/6 teams. The 2

nd X1 football team drew 2-2, with all other teams convincing wins.

Unfortunately, the Senior fixture with HIBS had to be re-scheduled until next term due to the weather. Thursday 31 July has been confirmed for this fixture. Masterton’s Hadlow School hosted our 1

st XI Hockey, 2

nd XI Football and a Rugby 7s selection in Week 7. This

was an enjoyable trip over the hill for the boys involved. Wellesley won all three games. Thank you to the parents who helped with transport. The Year 5/6 Colts teams played their annual winter fixture against Waterloo School. Two different rugby teams were selected to play each half. The overall result was a comfortable win to the 30 Wellesley boys who played. A second football game was added this year. The first team won an evenly fought game while the second team lost. The hockey boys were too strong for Waterloo and are developing into a strong team. Senior Multi Sport boys have been to the Indoor Sports Centre, Les Mills, H2O Extreme and had games at school. The two senior Waterpolo teams have been training before school but their competition start has been delayed due to issues with the Naenae Pool. A Year 7/8 team was entered in an Underwater Hockey tournament in Week 7. This was the only one of the term and the team relished the opportunity to play. They were gold medal winners which was a fantastic achievement! Old Boy and current NZ player Ben Paviour-Smith presented the medals to the team. Thank you to Anna and Emily Loughnan for managing and coaching the Wellesley team.

Year 3/4 basketball team has continued in their Term 2 competition. Six teams have been playing in the Karori Recreational Centre League and two teams in the Walter Nash Hutt Valley Leagues. The teams have been very competitive and there has been a general improvement in skills and team work. The Senior Table Tennis champions have been found. Robbie Michael defeated Christopher Bramley in the Singles Final. Robbie paired up with Jack Healy to defeat Christopher and Tom Chisnall in the doubles. Again there is a large number of very skilled players who have developed and fined tuned their skills at breaks and PE sessions. We are keen to keep our place as Wellington’s top primary school when the Wellington Table Tennis Champs are played late in Term 3. Darren Houston.

As can be seen by the report above, our underwater hockey team is having a very successful season. Photo: Sam, Cillian, Jack, old boy Ben, Wills and William. Other members in the team not in the photo are: Dougal Colquhoun, Ben Stirling, Luke Carpenter and Ambrose Hill. Christopher and Robbie (Single Finalists) Charles Erasmus, Thomas Hoskins & Dominic Coffin competed as a school Fencing team. They won two bouts against Upper Hutt and Queen Margaret/Marsden, and lost to HIBS and a composite Hutt Valley High School.

Staff News Our 2013/2014 GAP tutor Jamie Paris completes his year with us at the end of this term. Jamie is an old boy and he has added real value in his role. Our new GAPPER, Seb arrives for the beginning of Term 3 and will initially be staying with the Ross family. We are very keen to hear from anyone who is prepared to host our new GAPPER (Seb) for a term in 2015. We hosted a Feuerstein workshop for teachers here and at other schools. This method of instruction is being used worldwide and has a strong research background. The University of Auckland are training teachers in this approach and we were pleased to have Rabbi Rafi Feuerstein – Vice Chairman of Feuerstein Institute & Chaim Guggenheim – CEO present to us. Reuven Feuerstein was the founder and director of the International Center for the Enhancement of Learning Potential (ICELP) in Jerusalem,Israel.• For more than 50 years Feuerstein’s theories and applied systems have been implemented in both clinical and classroom settings internationally, with more than 80 countries applying his work. Feuerstein’s theory on the malleability of intelligence has led to more than 2,000 scientific research studies and countless case studies with various learning populations (from Wikipedia) This programme supports our strong belief that intelligence is not fixed and that the brain’s plasticity allows all learners to be successful.

Y7 Parent/Son House Breakfast

The first Year 7 House breakfast of the year was a great success with 55 boys and parents turning out at 7.20am at the Pavilion next door to Wellesley. The atmosphere was upbeat with plenty of early morning chatter. Paul Turner (House Captain for Croydon) and Joseph Hewson (House Captain for Selwyn) both gave a short address explaining the background to their House name. Our guest speaker was old boy Rob Metcalf who left Wellesley in the early 1990s. Rob works as a lawyer in Wellington but is about to go to Orlando, Florida to take up a ‘writer’s residency’. Rob recounted many stories of his time at Wellesley, particularly celebrating his appreciation of the variety of opportunities he experienced. He recalled some special memories, including playing marbles, and the frenzied market place this created.

He told the boys that at Wellesley he was encouraged and given the skills to think laterally and to this day he uses

these skills. Rob also talked about the impact of the Wellesley culture including the core values of respect and

tolerance, as well as the promotion of the skills and attitudes around persistence and striving to be the best you can

be. He said this attitude of never giving up paid off as he had applied four times for the writer’s residency before

gaining the award!

Centenary News- 23-26th

October 2014

From Geof Shirtcliffe, Centenary Committee Chairman (1976-1979) I wanted to update you all on our plans for the Centenary. The celebrations are now just four months away – remember it all happens over Labour Weekend – and our team of volunteers is already busy. Thanks to all of you who have offered to help. We will need plenty of hands on the weekend! The Centenary boys (current boys are our Centenary students!) and all other Friends of Wellesley are invited to A Day at the Bay on Saturday 25

th from 10.45am –starting with a very special Centenary Assembly and then there

will be a range of outdoor activities and food stalls. Warren will be leading a group on a bush-walk. Or for the more active there will be a classic all-comers cross-country run (for our Centenary boys and Old Boys and anyone else keen!). At the end of all that what could be better than a wharf jump, no matter what weather! Year 7 and 8 boys should have received an invitation to Dinner with Mr G on Thursday 23

rd at 6pm. This will be an

evening to remember, with Mr G presiding, inventive food, plenty of surprises - and matrons to keep an eye on table manners. If your son is keen to participate in this evening, I urge you to go to the Centenary website www.wellesley100.co.nz and book. We will be promoting this to our Old Boys up to Year 13, and there are limited seats, so we don’t want any current boys to miss out. For Old Boys and Wellesley Friends older than 18 another highlight will be the following night (Friday 24

th) A Few

Quiets in the Bay. This is a chance to catch up with old friends over a craft beer in the new Centennial Hall. I also encourage you to book soon for this on the website. Again, we are promoting this to our wider Friends database, and tickets are limited. And, of course, on Saturday night (25

th October) there is the Centenary Dinner, at Te Papa: a grand night of fine

food, great wine (from the greater Wellesley family), music, dancing and memories. We already have strong booking demand. To ensure you don’t miss out, go to www.wellesley100.co.nz and book. If you need any further information on any of these events, please contact [email protected]. We are also delighted to announce the following Centenary partners who are supporting the Centenary celebrations. ANZ, AISCORP and Adprint have all had longstanding relationships with Wellesley, while Richard Shirtcliffe, the new CEO of Tuatara Brewery, is a Wellesley Old Boy. We thank them all for their generous support. Finally, many thanks to the members of the Centenary Committee - and the wider (and growing) group of Centenary helpers - for their ongoing work. Their commitment and creativity are shaping what promises to be a grand occasion. We look forward to seeing you all there.

The Years 4-8 mid-year reports will be posted on Friday with Parent/Teacher interviews scheduled for Week 2 of Term 3. The NZCER report on ‘Achievement in Boys’ Schools validates so much of what we are doing at Wellesley.

http://www.nzcer.org.nz/research/publications/achievement-boys-schools-2010-12

Lastly, the boys will be excited to hear we are having a ‘wacky hair day’ on the final day of the term. (Friday 4 July). The boys can colour or do what they like with their hair, wear mufti etc as long as they bring a gold coin donation to support the Cancer Society. We are encouraging the boys to wear the colours of the team they are supporting for the Football World Cup. Kind regards Warren Owen Principal
