Piecing Instructions

Unit A

1. Strip piece unit by aligning the long edges of rectangles and sewing together using a ¼” seam. The short edges of the rectangles should form a straight edge along the bottom of the unit. When the fabrics are right side up, the top of the unit creates a stair step effect. The tallest rectangle will create the top left corner, the shortest rectangle will create the bottom right corner. Refer to diagrams for accurate fabric placement. Sew together pieces in the order listed for the desired effect.

Fabric F 14½” x 2” rectangle

Fabric A 14” x 2” rectangle

Fabric E 13” x 2” rectangle

Fabric A 10½” x 2” rectangle

Fabric D 9” x 2” rectangle

Fabric A 7½” x 2” rectangle

Fabric C 6” x 2” rectangle

Fabric A 4½” x 2” rectangle

Fabric B 3” x 3½” rectangle

Press all seams toward the Fabric B 3” x 3½” rectangle.

2. Place the strip set right sides facing you and wrong sides touching the cutting mat. Align the straight edge of the unit with the 45° angle on a long ruler. The ruler should meet with the top left corner of Fabric F. The shortest Fabric B rectangle will be trimmed, the ruler will not need to ex-tend to the bottom right corner. Before trimming, use another ruler or tape measure to ensure that the bottom edge is 14½”.

3. Trim the tops of the rectangles to a straight edge using the 45° angle as shown in the diagram.

4. Repeat Steps 1-3 to create (36) Unit A.

Unit B

5. Strip piece unit by aligning the long edges of rectangles and sewing together using a ¼” seam. The short edges of the rectangles should form a straight edge along the top of the unit. When the fabrics are right sides up, the top of the unit should create a straight edge and the bottom of the unit will create a stair step effect. The tallest rectangle will create the bottom left corner, the shortest rectangle will create the upper right corner. Refer to diagrams for accurate fabric placement. Sew together pieces in the order listed for the desired effect.

Fabric D 7½” x 2” rectangle

6. Place the strip set wrong sides facing you and right sides touching the cutting mat. Placing Unit B right sides down allows for trimming using the same method used in Unit A. Align the straight edge of the unit with the 45° angle on a long ruler. The ruler should meet with the top left corner of Fabric A. The shortest Fabric A rectangle will be trimmed, the ruler will not need to extend to the bottom right corner. Before trimming, use another ruler or tape measure to ensure that the length is 14½”.

7. Trim the tops of the rectangles to a straight edge using the 45° angle as shown in the diagram.

8. Repeat Steps 5-7 to create (36) Unit B.

Combining Units A and B

9. Use pins to align the edges of (1) Unit A and (1) Unit B nestling seams so that the fabrics meet as shown in the diagram.

10. Sew Unit A and Unit B right sides together, using a ¼” seam. The completed block should now appear as a HST.

HST = Half Square Triangle

11. Press seams toward Unit A. Trim the unit along the pieced edges only, as shown. This prevents sizing issues while assembling the quilt top. Trim block to 14” square, unfinished.

12. Repeat to create (36) completed blocks.

Quilt Assembly

13. Lay out the quilt top in (6) rows of (6) blocks each as shown in the Quilt Assembly Diagram on Page 7. Note the rotation of each block.

14. Sew into horizontal block rows first, alternating the direction in which you press the seams in each row.

15. Sew together the horizontal blocks rows to complete the quilt top.

16. Create the borders by sewing (9) Fabric A 4” x WOF strips together end to end using a straight ¼” seam. Cut (2) 88½“ lengths and (2) 81½“ lengths.

17. Attach the borders by sewing the 81½“ Fabric A side borders on first, pressing seams out-ward. Attach the 88½“ Fabric A top/bottom borders last to complete the quilt top. Press seams outward.

Finishing

18. With the backing fabric laying taut, place batting and then quilt top to form quilt sandwich.

19. Baste and quilt as desired.

20. Attach Fabric G binding to complete quilt.
