SAINT OF THE WEEK St. Jude Thaddeus
Feast Day: October 28th
Patron saint of hopeless, desperate, or lost causes.
St. Jude was an apostle of Jesus, and is believed to
have been Christ’s cousin. After Jesus’ death, Jude preached the Gospel in many countries. St. Jude’s epistle (letter) can be found in the New Testament and was written to Jewish
converts and the Church in the East. His letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances. He is buried with St. Simon the zealot, also an
apostle, in St. Peter’s Basilica. St. Jude, pray for us!
WE ARE STILL LOOKING
FOR HALL MONITORS.
CONTACT US FOR MORE INFORMATION!

to ancho como profundo.

THE PRIEST GARAGES! We ask your cooperation in not parking along the driveway outside the priest garages and in keep-ing cars clear of that area completely. Especially since priests may need to go out on sick calls and other emergencies, it is important to keep the large driveway area and the space in front of the garage doors completely accessible. A MESSAGE FROM MONSIGNOR HAMILTON
October 23, 2016
FAMILY LIFE PUMPKIN PATCH
Dear Parishioners and Friends: In the middle of May I was diagnosed with pneumonia and spent sever-al days in Good Samaritan Hospital. Upon release and with the Memorial Day Weekend fast approach-ing when rectory staff would be at a minimum, I decided not to return to the rectory but to recuperate at St. Pius X Residence, a unit of Dominican Village, Amityville, provided by the bishop for diocesan priests needing recuperation or even full retirement. Equipped with the spiritual and physical features needed by priests, St. Pius X Residence offered a choice helpful to all at the time of my release from the hospital (5/25); so I made that choice and have since concelebrated Mass regularly (daily) with fifteen or so priests already living there and have enjoyed their companionship. Since the invitation of the Residence was for a continuing rather than just an ad hoc visit, I decided to accept with the bishop’s agreement, which he has given generously, as always. Naturally I miss and will miss the environment (the parish) where my service for 22 years I served as pastor – with an additional 9 years as a “helper” with gratitude I reflect as I continue on as pastor emeri-tus, a status not based on residence. With this brief explanation of what may have seemed to be a mystery I hope I have brought to light with much gratitude and affection and appreciated prayers for all. Let us pray for one another. My new address: Dominican Village – St. Pius X Residence, Apt. 371, 565 Albany Avenue, Amityville, NY 11701. My new phone: 631-608-2153 Monsignor Hamilton

Gospel Reflection Questions…. After reading next Sunday’s Gospel take some time to pray on it before you come to Mass. Use the questions below to aid your reflection.
1. A man climbs a tree in order to see. A holy man goes to a “sinner’s” house for dinner. A repenting per-son gives half of all his possessions to the poor. How do you explain these events? Does knowing Jesus Christ elicit extraordinary behavior from you? What? 2. How does Pope Francis use the story of Zacchaeus to help the UN develop goals that impact the “structural causes of poverty and hunger, attain more substantial re-sults in protecting the environment, ensure destructuralized and produc-tive labor for all, and provide appro-priate protection for the family”? It is the encounter between Jesus Christ and the rich tax collector Zacchaeus, as a result of which Zacchaeus made a radical deci-sion of sharing and justice, be-cause his conscience had been awakened by the gaze of Jesus. This same spirit should be at the beginning and end of all political and economic activity. The gaze, often silent, of that part of the human family which is cast off, left behind, ought to awaken the conscience of political and eco-nomic agents and lead them to generous and courageous deci-sions with immediate results, like the decision of Zacchaeus. Does this spirit of solidarity and shar-ing guide all our thoughts and actions?

Wisdom 11:22—12:2
The author of the Book of Wisdom gives us a reflection on God’s mercy. The starting point is the greatness of God, for whom the entire universe is a grain or a drop of dew, yet he nevertheless loves and cares for us frail crea-tures as a mother loves her children. In God’s eyes, we are good because he made us, a goodness that precedes any action or accomplishment on our part. We don’t earn worthiness; it is bestowed on us as an essential aspect of who we are. As such, God is the ideal parent who never ceases to coax us to repentance “little by little.” We are invited to turn from sin to taste the sweetness of God’s mercy.
2 Thessalonians 1:11—2:2
This reading is made up of two long sentences that don’t seem to have any-thing to do with each other. The first is an assurance of Paul’s prayers for the church at Thessalonica and the second is a straight-forward warning not to be misled and upset by false teaching. But both sentences show how much Paul cares for this fledgling church that he helped establish. Because of his paternal concern, he seeks to sustain the church by his prayers. He then quickly addresses a serious matter that has greatly upset the community by way of a forged letter that has been circulating claiming the “end times” have come. Paul’s goal is to protect them from this lie and assure them the end is not yet upon them. He confronts false teaching with the zeal and ur-gency of a protective parent.
Luke 19:1-10
The Gospel story today is the familiar and beloved account of Zacchaeus’ meeting with Jesus. So much rested on his decision to climb that tree in or-der to see Jesus. What if he hadn’t? But he wanted to “see who Jesus was” and so he made every effort to get more than a quick look at him or just hear his voice as one of the crowd. That experience changed his life. Unprodded, Zacchaeus offers restitution for all his thieving as a chief tax collector. As in the first reading from Wisdom, God never stops inviting his children to re-pentance. Happy the person who takes up this invitation and believes! Hap-py the person for whom Jesus can say, “Today salvation has come to this house!”
