“Internet of things” as a new keyword in the internet society
• Internet of things means that many types of sensor such as power meter connects to the Internet, which adopts the standardized interface.
• Auto ID Lab is the university research consortium, consisted of 7 universities in worldwide: e.g. MIT[US], Cambridge{UK], Fudan {China] , and Keio University{Japan], and has initiated standardization and research in this field.

• Energy needs to be controlled more efficiently, including “energy creating
devices” and “energy storing devices”, as well as energy saving devices

○ When optimizing energy consumption in a house level, you need to observe and manage every home device. Thus, network and automatic control system, called Home Energy Management System[HEMS], helps that demand side control.
From “Internet of things” to HEMS
Standardized Organization and ongoing standardized activity
○ HEMS must integrate a lot of home appliance and energy devices, so interoperability had been one concern in 2005 to 2010.
○ Japanese Government and Japan Smart Community Alliance[JSCA], which covers over 700 related companies, has agreed to address ECHONET Lite as the new standardized interface , connecting home appliances: air conditioner, PV, EV, smart meter.

○ With referring the decision by Japan Smart Community Alliance[JSCA], covering over 700 companies, the smart meter study working group in the department of energy, Japan, has finalized the basic thinking about the interface of the power meter.

○ Power meter has two roots. One is the connection between the meter and the power company, called root A. Another is root B, which is the network connection between the meter and home.
○ Important decision is the agreement which Root A and Root B must be equal in terms of measuring . It means that power company accounts a user in using root B.
○ And B root use IP and Echonet lite as the standardized interface.

○ Smart meter, PV, storage batteries, fuel cells, EV/PHEV, air conditioners and so on are main equipment to connect with HEMS.
○ For connecting all the devices requires, we need to sort out the rules in the industries, to insure safety, such as data link and physical layer.

○ Standard that has been investigated in energy equipment field at home is SEP2.0 from the U.S、KNX from Europe、ECHONET Lite from Japan.
○ About Japanese standard, at this point, we have high level technical accumulation of great control of energy equipment. It is important that Japan use our good points and cooperate with other countries.
