To the Parents of IB Students:

Community service helps student become more aware of their place in the world and see how they can have a positive impact on others. It is important that you support your child in the following ways:

Sit down with your child and read this booklet together. Help your child brainstorm a list of interest areas that already appeal to your child, such as love of animals, enjoyment in spending time with older people, working with children, caring for the environment, etc. Help your child focus on an idea that he or she would like to develop into a project. Encourage your child to select ideas that are appropriate and fun! Help your child organize his/her planning by talking through these question steps:

1. What would be an easy and fun project idea to work on?2. What are the steps you will need to complete the project?3. Who needs to do what?4. When does each task need to be completed?

Periodically review his or her community service booklet, helping your child know HOW to write up the service documentation by showing WHAT the project was, WHAT his or her job was, HOW he or she felt about the experience, and HOW he or she affected the people that were being helped. Help your child understand the positive aspects of community service through the impact of others and the world.

Your support in community service will help make this a worthwhile experience for your child. Thank you for your help in this important matter.

What is My Community? Why Should I Care About It?

Sometimes it is easy to be selfish and to think about oneself. We all do it some of the time! The fact is, we are all members of many communities and as members we have to share in the responsibility of making sure that they are the best possible communities in which to live.

A community is a group of people living, working, or playing together. Notice how some communities are small and others large. Your family is a community. Your class is a community. Your school is a community. Charlotte is a community as well as North Carolina. In fact, we are all members of the largest community of all … the world!

Why Should I Care About My Community?

Since you are part of your community, you are actually helping yourself when you work to maintain and preserve your community. Unfortunately, it is true that many people do not care about their community, but you do not have to think that way. The more people care about their community, the happier the world will be. Just imagine how happy the world would be if people did to others what they would like to have done to themselves.

Community Service

What is community service?Serving the community is an opportunity for you to participate directly in outside activities based upon talents developed in school. The main focus of community service is to instill an awareness of yourself and the role you play in your community and the world.

What does this have to do with school? The school is a community of its own, and we want to make this school and its environment a better place for everyone.

This booklet is a guide for you. It is for logging the community service activities in which you participate. Throughout the year you should make regular journal entries. These can be brief but should state your activities, how you felt about it, how you might improve, and on what you might concentrate in the future.
