Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill say it best. They have always led with the question, “How can we help?” Their initial vision was to inspire “we” to become “all of us.” And it has.

In 2018, you raised an astonishing amount, bringing Old Bill’s Fun Run’s 22-year total to more than $159 million for local nonprofits. Inside these pages, you will see the impact of our remarkable community’s generosity. In fact, one out of every three families in Teton County takes part in Old Bill’s—an event that has become a national model for collaborative fundraising.

Old Bill’s lasts only a morning, but because of your support, we are touching lives and working for the community every day. Nonprofits rely on us for professional workshops and resources and receive critical funding through our Competitive and Capacity Building grant opportunities. We convene Community Conversations to find collaborative solutions to local problems. Through our Youth Philanthropy program, the next generation is learning to recognize the greatest needs in Jackson Hole. In 2018, we awarded over $300,000 in scholarships so students can realize their dreams. With over $70 million in assets, we help donors achieve their philanthropic goals by providing charitable giving options and prudently investing their funds.

Quite simply, we help people help people. This is our essential value. This is why we are here. It’s all because of you.

About Us

ABOUT US

Our community knows us best for Old Bill’s Fun Run, the collaborative fundraiser that helps local nonprofits raise operating funds. Throughout the year, however, we are busy administering funds, working with donors, and providing grants and resources to nonprofits. The Foundation manages over $70 million in assets and granted over $22 million in 2018.

To the right, you will find a comprehensive list of the funds, programs, resources, and services we provide. As illustrated, much of our work connects donors, nonprofits, and the larger community.

“The Community Foundation has changed Jackson dramatically. Through leadership,

the Foundation has empowered us to give back and has taught us that being a philanthropist is important and possible,

regardless of one’s net worth.” –Carol Gonnella, Past Board Member

Margot Snowdon and Yves Desgouttes focus their giving, beyond their annual commitment as Co-Challengers, on social issues; both volunteer their time and energy at local organizations. Margot served on the Community Foundation’s Board and Grants Committee and reflects, “Serving on the Grants Committee, I learned so much about this community. I could not be engaged in the type of local philanthropy I do today without it. Every meeting would shake up my assumptions and rattle the way I was thinking. Listening to other committee members helped me see so much more of every issue.”

Margot first came to Jackson in the late ‘70s. She saw a moose while backcountry skiing and quickly decided that she wanted to make the Tetons her home. In her early days in the valley, Margot spent as much time as possible in the natural world, including time with Mardie Murie. “Every trip started and ended with a headlamp to squeeze in as much time outside as possible!” She also started teaching yoga through Central Wyoming College before it was fashionable, taught at a bar in Moose and then opened the first yoga studio in Wyoming.

Yves had several careers, first as a geologist in Canada, then as a chief trader and treasurer of financial institutions in London and New York. Having visited Jackson several times, he moved permanently in the mid 90’s to manage motels he had bought here. The couple met in 2001 through mutual friends. Yves eventually called Margot, invited her to dinner at Calico, and the rest is history.

They share a commitment to giving back, and both recall learning about generosity at an early age. Yves was born in Paris and remembers when a local priest spoke out and “made France aware that homeless people were dying from cold in the streets. That made me realize that individuals can be courageous and advocate for others.”

Margot was raised in a philanthropic family and recalls when her grandfather and parents provided funding to build a recreation center for an underserved community in Plainfield, New Jersey.

Having been Co-Challengers since 2008, Margot and Yves embody this same type of generosity, “Old Bill’s is so simple, and Mr. and Mrs. Old Bill are so motivating, their humility continually inspires us to give.”

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

In 2018, the Community Foundation provided numerous professional development opportunities for nonprofit board and staff members.

RESOURCES

The Nonprofit Directory, Nonprofit Listserve, and Volunteer JH are integrated resources the community can access for free. Nonprofits create listings in the directory and post service opportunities to Volunteer JH. Each week, current opportunities are emailed to the 1,400 listserve members who also regularly post announcements, requests for information, and links to pertinent information.

Access the directory and volunteer page at cfjacksonhole.org to learn about organizations, investigate fields of interest and find service opportunities.

2018 FUTURE MS. OLD BILL’S AWARD RECIPIENT

Commun i t y Foundat ion o f J ack son Ho le / Annua l Repor t 2018

13

In 2013, an anonymous donor established the Future Mr. or Ms. Old Bill’s Award. The recipient—chosen from Youth Philanthropy participants—receives $1,500 toward college tuition and $500 to grant to a nonprofit of his or her choice. The 2018 recipient, Ellie Dunn, attended the Jackson Hole Community School and served on the Foundation’s Competitive Grants Committee for five cycles. Ellie is an avid mountain biker and throughout high school volunteered doing trail and advocacy work with Mountain Bike the Tetons

and the Greater Yellowstone Coalition. She created and starred in a video about trail etiquette that reached over 7,000 people and gave a presentation about the importance of youth mountain biking at a recent public lands symposium. Ellie is currently attending Stanford University.

“Reviewing and awarding grants was incredibly

rewarding, giving me a unique perspective into

the nonprofit world.”– Ellie Dunn,

CAPACITY BUILDING GRANT

In 2018, the Foundation’s Capacity Building Committee awarded a $159,000 multi-year grant to Teton Literacy for its SOAR program, an intensive continuum for a select cohort of at-risk students to combat summer learning loss and supplement school-day learning.

A cradle-to-college program, SOAR is free for students who commit for their entire school careers. In its first year, SOAR provided 8,065 hours of intensive academic support for 71 students, connecting literacy with science, math, and recreational activities. To the right, the first SOAR cohort is pictured on a hike.

OPPORTUNITIES FUND

The Foundation’s Opportunities Fund supports capacity building and collective impact to ensure the long-term stability and reach of local nonprofits. This fund provides significant resources to support expansion and increased effectiveness of organizations in Teton County.

COLLECTIVE IMPACT

The Latino population in Jackson Hole is developing Type 2 Diabetes at an alarming rate, and the price of insulin is skyrocketing. In response, the Foundation’s Collective Impact Committee convened representatives from organizations working to address this issue. From there, the group began collaborative work, identifying immediate needs and gaps in service resulting in St. John’s nutritionists donating their time at Teton Free Clinic. To support these efforts, the Foundation’s Collective Impact Committee granted $41,000 for a cost-sharing program with local diabetic patients to mitigate the high cost of insulin. Going forward, the group will expand preventative wellness programs to serve pre-diabetic patients and eventually change the course of this disease in our community. As they proceed, the Foundation’s Collective Impact Committee will be right there with them providing additional support, as needed.

EDELWEISS FUNDThe Edelweiss Fund began with a testamentary gift from a pioneering female petroleum geologist from Casper, Wyoming. Named in honor of her Swiss heritage, this fund continues her philanthropic legacy. During her life, she enjoyed helping people, especially women, to achieve their dreams, and contributed to her favorite fields: earth sciences and natural history. In 2018, the Edelweiss Women & Girls Fund supported Wyoming’s Latina Youth Conference, an annual two-day event for 5th-12th grade girls of Hispanic descent from across the state. The conference provides a welcoming space for these young women to engage in educational workshops, see cultural performances and explore possibilities for their future careers.

LEGACY SOCIETY

Bequests and charitable trusts provide immense benefits to nonprofits. The Community Foundation can help create strategic approaches to planned giving, and can accept varied assets including art and real estate. Trusts, bequests, and annuities benefiting the Foundation can support your favorite organizations in perpetuity and enrich Jackson’s future.

D O N O RS T O R Y

J A N E T A N D B O B W H I T M I R E

Janet and Bob Whitmire are continually

amazed by the concept of Co-Challengers.

“It is incredible that a group of people

with a philanthropic bent put $3 million

in a pot for other members of the

community to distribute.” They are

thrilled to be a part of this selfless group,

and Janet even “finds it freeing to give

without knowing exactly where it goes.

I like not having to control every aspect.

There are so many things that are not on

my radar.”

Janet and Bob met during a ski lesson in

Vail. The session ended with a race, which

they choose to agree they both won. In

1999, they started vacationing for a few

weeks in Jackson each winter, but it was

not until they began spending summers

in the valley that they realized they were

always sad to leave.

One summer day when hiking back to

Teton Village from Marion Lake, they

missed the tram down and had to walk

to the base. The additional miles were

challenging, but as they descended they

could hear the Grand Teton Music

Festival’s symphony playing, which

immediately lifted their spirits.

As the Whitmires spent more time in

Jackson, they also met wonderful people.

As Bob puts it, “People in Jackson live

in technicolor. No one is here by

accident, and everyone is passionate

about something.”

Connecting with more people also led to

a deeper involvement in the community.

Janet’s parents always modeled such

values—serving was a core part of her

upbringing. Bob says his philanthropy is

inspired by his wife. According to Janet,

he is a quick study. They both “believe the

resources [they] have are only [theirs] to

do something good with, to put back into

the world.”

The Whitmires have served on a number

of local boards, and Janet is now a member

of the Foundation’s Grants Committee. In

addition to their Co-Challenger support,

they both enjoy giving directly to specific

nonprofits through Old Bill’s. Reflecting

on the event, Bob notes, “People just

want to be a part of it. It’s catchable. It

reminds you that people are inherently

can I do, I am just one person?’ I have

two-words for them. Old Bill’s.”

IN MEMORIAM

ARCHIE JURICH

Archie Jurich, a Wyoming native, Army man, and teacher somehow socked away enough money to endow six annual scholarships for students to pursue higher education. The world may never know how he and his wife did it, but young people will be forever grateful to this stalwart couple. Archie was born and raised in Rock Springs, Wyoming, earned a BA at the University of Wyoming, and promptly reported for duty in World War II. Archie’s fluency in the Serbo-Croatian language qualified him for the Army’s Military Intelligence School, and he became a translator and interpreter. He served over three years and remained in the Army Reserve, eventually becoming a Captain.

Returning to the United States in 1947, Archie moved to Jackson to teach and coach at Jackson Hole High School, where he met his soulmate, Lois Kemper. The couple married in 1960 in a ceremony at Ralph and Jeanine Gill’s home. Archie coached basketball for thirty-five years and taught accounting, business math, and typing. He and Lois became part of the fabric of the high school, guiding and influencing generations of young people in Teton County. After a combined sixty years of teaching, Archie and Lois retired and spent their days walking

the links at Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis, and golfing in warmer climates during the winter months.

Archie created six scholarships at the Community Foundation that are awarded annually to students from Teton County, Rock Springs, Wyoming, and Tarkio, Missouri, where Lois grew up. Each scholarship supports students from families with multi-generational lineage in their respective communities. Archie always enjoyed learning about recipients’ family histories and how his scholarships would shape their futures.

EMILY KNOBLOCH

Emily Knobloch, MD, fondly referred to as Dr. Emmy by her patients in Jackson, was born in 1960 in New York City. She graduated from the Westminster Schools (Atlanta, Georgia) and Davidson College, where she was captain of the tennis team and Davidson’s first female All-American in any sport. She was elected to Davidson’s Hall of Fame.

After starting a career on Wall Street, Emmy found her true passion in medicine. She graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School where she was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. Practicing internal medicine at St. John’s Medical Center, she made everyone feel as though they were her only patient. She devotedly cared for her beloved late father, Carl Knobloch, and her partner Robert Berlin. She also served on the boards of the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, the Senior Center of Jackson Hole, and was Chair of St. John’s Hospital Board and Medical Director of St. John’s Living Center.

Emmy loved horses, playing tennis, fishing with her father, and most especially, rescuing

stray dogs, of which she had many. She was a Rowland Ward Record book holder for fair-chase hunting and also won awards for her marathon times. Emmy lived a life full of love, courage, and achievement. She knew what she loved, people and animals, and will be remembered for her continuous acts of kindness to others.

BIRDIE ROSSETTER

Birdie Rossetter had a knack for knowing where the big fish were hanging out. In Jackson, she was particularly proud of her performances in the annual One Fly tournament. Birdie was born in 1929, in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and married Thomas Rossetter in 1950. Avid anglers, hikers and skiers, the Rossetters retired to Jackson in 1984. A year later, Birdie happened upon the Circle Shoe Ranch in Wilson and immediately fell in love with its creeks and the fishing they promised. The ranch includes the main channel of Fish Creek, its Oxbow and a flow from Spring Creek that welcomes cutthroat trout and a multitude of wildlife species. Blue herons, osprey, otters, and anglers all consider themselves lucky to fish at the Circle Shoe.

During their 30 years in the valley, the Rossetters embraced Jackson’s community. Birdie served on the boards of the Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, Teton County Library Foundation, and the Teton Science Schools. The Rossetters were also passionate about conservation and placed the Circle Shoe under easement with the Jackson Hole Land Trust in 1989. That same year, the Hardeman

Barns and Fish Creek Ranch, neighbors to the east and south of Circle Shoe, were also placed under easement. Birdie reflected that “Having the Circle Shoe and adjoining properties in easements means that the incredible views and wildlife habitat around Wilson are protected forever. This place has given me and my family so much joy over the years, and it’s deeply important to me to have been able to pass that on for the future.” The Rossetters left a lasting legacy for all of Teton County.

DAVID SWIFT

David Swift documented people and gatherings in Jackson through photographs, capturing locals at social events for over forty years. He had an incredible ability to move through crowds inconspicuously and come out on the other side having snapped memorable photos. He was universally beloved in Teton County.

David moved to Jackson in 1976 and worked for the Jackson Hole News as a darkroom technician, writer, and photographer before becoming a full-time photographer in the ‘80s. From then on, it was rare to see him without a camera in-hand. With his thick coif of dark, disheveled hair, he took distinct photos that captured the mood and character of people and places.

He studied filmmaking, journalism, and photography at Compton College and California State University Long Beach. In Jackson, he founded both Atomic Digital and JHLocal while sharing his talents across the nation with publications including Fortune, Motorcyclist, The New York Times, People, and Sports Illustrated. One of David’s most legendary photos features Bob Dylan playing with Bill Briggs and the Stagecoach Band.

For years, David made everyone at the Community Foundation much better looking than we are in real life. To preserve Swift’s work, his close friend and fellow photographer, Ted Wood, is creating an archive that will eventually be housed at the Jackson Hole Historical Society. The Community Foundation is funding this project through Conservation Ink.

IN MEMORIAM

MIKE THIEME

Mike Thieme made The Guinness Book of World Records at seventy-four as the oldest climber to reach the highest point on Mt. Kilimanjaro. He climbed that mountain four times between the ages of seventy-one and eighty. Born in Missoula, Montana, Mike earned a Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Montana State University, served in the Army Air Corps, became a pilot, and tested military aircraft in World War II. He subsequently earned an MBA at Harvard, where he met the love of his life, Jean Louise, who was studying at Radcliffe. The two married in 1948, and Mike took a management position with American Aggregates Corporation. He rose through the ranks during a nearly 40-year career there, and eventually took the helm of the business. Under his leadership, it became one of the largest suppliers of sand, gravel, and limestone products in the United States.

In 1990, the Thiemes retired to Jackson, allowing Mike to return to favorite activities of his Rocky Mountain youth: skiing, summiting peaks, and hunting big game. He shot his last elk when he was 88. In Jackson, the Thiemes served on the board and committees of Off Square Theatre Company and were

instrumental in the vision for and creation of the Center for the Arts. A member of the Foundation’s Legacy Society, Mike’s endowment fund, for which his daughter now serves as advisor, was a beneficiary of his retirement account. He also left an additional unrestricted, testamentary gift to the Foundation that will be used to support our work in the community and to honor the Thieme’s love of the arts.
