A Harrison County student has been named the recipient of a four-year, full-tuition scholarship as the Harrison County Community Foundation 2011 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar. Katelyn Miller is receiving full tuition to attend Hanover College and an $800 yearly stipend for required books and equipment. She is studying in the Pre-Med Program, majoring in Chemistry. Katelyn is a 2011 graduate from North Harrison High School. She is the daughter of Gerald and Karen Stewart of Ramsey. Katelyn graduated at the top of her class and was very active in Renaissance, National Honor Society, Academic Team, Future Farmers of America, and Fellowship of Christian Students. She was also active in 4-H Entomology, her church youth group, and has served as a church camp leader. 103 Harrison County graduating high school seniors applied for this scholarship. A volunteer committee of five former HCCF board members participated in a blind scoring process. The Scholarship Committee narrowed the applicants to six finalists and conducted an interview of each in mid-February. The nominee and two alternates were submitted to Independent Colleges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI), for the final selection. ICI is a nonprofit corporation that represents 31 regionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges, and universities in the state. The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly Endowment initiative to help Hoosier students reach higher levels of education. Recipients are able to choose to attend any Indiana college of their choice. Indiana ranks among the lowest states in percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bachelor’s degree. There were 142 Lilly Endowment Community Scholarships awarded statewide to the Class of 2011. After many hours of conversation and evaluating our operations, the Harrison County Community Foundation board agreed we were ready for several substantial changes; for the board, for staff, and programs. First, the board felt our policies had matured to the point where fewer members were needed on the board itself. At the same time, they wanted more of our residents to play a role in our decision-making. The board will be down-sized from the original 21 members to 17 in 2012, and lowered to 15 for 2013 and beyond. The Advisory Council was eliminated at the end of 2011 and replaced with Community Volunteers that will be serving on various committees with full voting responsibilities (see back page). This structure will continue to provide a ready reserve of future board members with experience in our work. Increasing grant requests, growing scholarship programs, and the need for enhanced fundraising efforts called for more staff to serve the community. To bring in additional staff required more space. Construction on a 1,500 square foot addition began in December to provide offices, a meeting room, and storage. Construction is expected to be completed in May. Long-time Program Manager, Julie Timberlake, will become our Director of Programs. While continuing to oversee our grants programs, she will focus her talents on scholarships, youth philanthropy, and other HCCF programs. Anna Curts will be transitioning to Grants Manager in 2012 and a new Administrative Assistant will join the team. An experienced fundraiser will also be hired to fill the new position of Director of Development. More donors are responding to our services and we need someone available to help them fulfill their philanthropic needs. The board also agreed to re-evaluate grantmaking processes. In 2012, a block grant program will debut for the three school corporations. Each corporation will be allocated funds based on school enrollment and will submit how those funds will be used within the guidelines provided by HCCF. We hope this will help our schools in financial planning and better serve the learning needs of our children. These and other changes phased in during 2012 should help us better serve the community in many new and exciting ways. Community Foundation Day Proclamation Governor Mitch Daniels again recognized the important work of Indiana community foundations by proclaiming Monday, July 25, Community Foundation Day. Our state’s incredible community foundation infrastructure is part of a larger philanthropic sector. Together, Indiana’s 1,400 private, corporate and community foundations make a significant impact on our state’s economy, education, environment and people in need. Though foundations often play a role in times of crisis, they are more than emergency ATMs. Foundations actively strategize and work together to create a better future for Indiana communities. Where foundations provide added benefit is their strategic approach to giving. It takes planning to be prepared to respond well to grim circumstances as they arise. Significantly, it takes even more effort to prepare for the future. Community Foundation leaders take it upon themselves to know the geographic regions in which they fund. They often focus their grantmaking on a particular need or type of funding. The Harrison County Community Foundation began operating in 1996 with an initial gift of $5,000,000 from Caesars Indiana now known as Horseshoe Southern Indiana. With continuing contributions from the riverboat casino and other donors, total assets through December of 2011 exceed $131,000,000 and over $50,000,000 has been distributed in grants and scholarships. The very popular donation-match program has been available for eleven years, enhancing the creation of more than 163 charitable endowments at the Foundation. More information on the Harrison County Community Foundation is available at www.hccfindiana.org. HCCF is happy to announce that Mary “Katie” Gibson of Corydon was selected as the first recipient of the Harrison County Farm Bureau, Inc. Agricultural Career Scholarship. She received $1,500.00. Harrison County Farm Bureau, Inc. established this fund in 2010 to provide scholarships for students in the agricultural field. Recipients must have successfully completed at least twenty-four hours of college credit with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8. Students must have been residents of Harrison County on the date of their high school graduation. Katie is a 2009 graduate of Corydon Central High School. She was active in both 4-H and FFA in Harrison County through her high school years. Katie is enrolled at Murray State University (MSU) where she is studying Agribusiness Economics with a focus area of marketing and management. At MSU, she is a member of the Sigma Alpha Professional Agriculture Sorority where she has served as President. She also served as President of the Agribusiness Club and is a member of the MSU Block and Bridle. During the summer of 2011, she was employed as a Financial Service Officer Intern with Farm Credit Services of Mid-America. After graduation she plans to return to the Southern Indiana area and have a small beef cattle farm. Dictionaries have multiple functions and purposes. Mainly they are an aid to learning about definitions of words, spelling, pronunciation, grammar, and contextual use of words in a written and spoken language.

Every third grader in Harrison County once again received a specialgift from the Harrison County Community Foundation. Over 500 studentswere given their very own “Webster’s Dictionary for Students SpecialEncyclopedic Edition” in September. A copy was also presented to classroom teachers and the school library. All Harrison County elementary schools are eligible to participate.

The Dictionary Project is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit organization with the goal to assist students in completing the school year as goodwriters, active readers and creative thinkers by providing students withtheir own personal dictionary. The dictionaries are a gift to each studentto use at school and at home for years to come. The Dictionary Project istargeted to 3rd graders because this is the age where children transitionfrom “learning to read” to “reading to learn”. With funding from variousorganizations throughout the state, The Dictionary Project provided over 45,000 dictionaries to students in the State of Indiana during the 2010-2011school year. This is a 45% state coverage estimate.

Connecting young people to our community is critical. We need to findways to engage them so they have a senseof ownership and belonging. The youthneed to know that they make a differenceand can contribute in positive ways to ourcommunity. Youth need to be challengedto be philanthropists by giving, serving, leading and engaging in the life and workof the community.

The Youth Philanthropy Initiative ofIndiana, (YPII) believes the principles ofdemocracy are rooted in these four

concepts; giving, serving, leading and engaging the “pillars” of youth philanthropy. As a community we need to continually encourage youth to give, serve, lead and be civically engaged. As acommunity, we need to ask ourselves howwell we are doing this. Do your youth feelinvested in the community? Do they feelappreciated for their gifts and talents andthat the community values them? Arethere ways for them to contribute and beengaged in the life and work of a community?

The Harrison County CommunityFoundation began the Youth asPhilanthropists program in 2010. Duringeight monthly meetings, 17 teens met tolearn about giving back and how theFoundation operates. They led their owngrant-making program and organized afund-raising dinner to support the work ofHarrison County Community Services.

The Youth Philanthropy Initiative ofIndiana, (YPII) is celebrating ten years ofgrowing lifelong philanthropists who givetheir time, talent, and treasure for the common good. It a statewide initiative partnering with more than 35 communityorganizations dedicated to engagingyouth in giving back to their communities. You can make a difference. Considerbecoming a Youth PhilanthropyAmbassador. Encourage youth
